HONOLULU — Hawaii Republicans are holding a "Balanced Budget Summit" intended to show the public that tax increases aren't needed to address the state's shortfall.

They've previously said renewing government employee furloughs, selling state-owned lands and delaying tax funds would be an alternative to tax increases being considered as the Legislature enters its final days.
Speakers include Republican representatives and members of the American Legislative Exchange Council, a group whose mission is to promote free markets and limited government.

Emphasis added.
Fortunately Democrats control Hawaii's legislature.
I'm sure this is a terrible disappointment, though, to the billionaires and corporations behind ALEC, who's really love to help Hawaii with its budget problems by buying some state-owned lands...
See the long compilation topic on the
American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC) for more information on what this organization is doing. Reply 111 there refers to ALEC's "State Budget Reform Toolkit" -- which I'm sure was handed out at this "Balanced Budget Summit" -- and there's a separate topic about the toolkit, in which
ALEC recommends privatizing services and selling off state property such as parks.
