Threads for previous days are in my journal

To make sure the Army doesn't swing the revolution to the people, with the silent complicity of world leaders more concerned about the stability of oil prices than people's lives, Qaddafi has brought in more than 35,000 North African mercenaries specifically from Chad, Nigeria, Guinea and Darfur. There's a Facebook video of a captured mercenary from Chad (Youtube here). Captured mercenaries confessed they were paid between $12,000 - $30,000 each. Today pamphlet ads were found in Nigeria offering them $2000/day for their savage work.

Is Qaddafi the only one paying these mercenaries? Or are EU governments, with their long history of hiring mercenaries, chipping in? I demand to know.

Just aired a few minutes ago on CNN. Abdul was evac'd by ship to Istanbul with his wife.

Abdul told of mercs and troops from Gaddafi's "kid's unit" killing indiscriminately. (Kid's unit is obvious ref. to 32nd Brigade led by G's son, Khamis.)

Abdul: "I SAW CARNAGE."

11. Love the below quote
Read it over at AJ.

6:01pm Violence flared up even before the Friday sermons were over, according to a source in Tripoli.

"People are rushing out of mosques even before Friday prayers are finished because the state-written sermons were not acceptable, and made them even more angry," the source said.

From AJE Live Blog - Libya Feb 25:

2:00pm Libyan state TV broadcasts a sermon from Friday prayers in which the imam says:

"Those who call for chaos will not be forgiven on the Day of Judgment. Stay away from internal fighting. We have to stay away from any evil and wrong doing. Whoever disobeys the ruler is disobeying God. We have to stay away from incitement work for unity."

16. In the too little, too late department, the US has announced sanctions
which is something they should have done the first day the rebels were fired on.

Gadhafi is pouring money into recruiting thugs from all over Africa to do his dirty work for him since he can't trust his own military. When the military finishes turning, this one will get bad fast.

Every country in the world needs to freeze his, his extended family's, and Libya's assets. Mercenaries who are no longer getting paid go home.

Website of the American Embassy in Libya
libya.usembassy.gov added: Friday 25 April 2011, 21: 36

The u.s. has imposed sanctions against Libya. The Embassy in Tripoli is closed and the cooperation in the military field is terminated.
Also in an international context sends us to measures against the regime of the Libyan leader Gaddafi, said spokesman Jay Carney. "The aim of the sanctions is to make it clear that the regime must stop the abuse and the bloodshed," said Carney.

Sanctions

According to him is the legitimacy of Gaddafi as leader of the Libyan people reduced to zero.
International are still few concrete measures taken against Libya. The EU takes next week probably decide on sanctions. Thought on an arms embargo and travel restrictions for the Libyan State leaders.

20. Will "punish Libyans with bloodbath for their disloyalty"
Royal African Society
Libya: the internal dynamics of collapse (*Excerpt*)
George Joffé - University of Cambridge

.... Now, apart from using African migrants as a tool to coerce European states such as Italy with the threat of uncontrolled migration, it has also recruited them into its elite forces around the “Deterrent Battalion” (the 32nd Brigade) - used solely for internal repression. They have no loyalty to Libyans, (who hate them,) and they are the forces on which Colonel Qadhafi relies to ensure that his regime ends in a bloodbath to punish Libyans for their disloyalty to his political vision.

55. Cat and Mice-game with Libyan censor

Opposition Channels
Since a few days in the East of Libya two medium wave transmitters in the hands of the opposition. The stations send out from under the name Voice of Free Libya (1125 AM) in Al Bayda and Radio Free Libya from the Green Mountain (675 AM) in Benghazi. According to the luisterdienst of the BBC has the Iranian television images show who submitted seem out of the city Ajdabiyah. The television report shows a message of a military see, with a flag in the background from the time of for Gaddafi.

Export ban Internet filters
The Netherlands Government argues in favour of a European ban on the sale of Internet filters to dictatorial regimes. ' it is impossible that people of their lives fighting for internet use in order to get things done and that then is blocked ", says Prime Minister Mark Rutte Friday in the newspaper de Telegraaf.
The export ban must apply to North Africa, Iran and China. I would also like to Rutte that the European Union server capacity available as dictators the block access to own Internet addresses. That information is then accessible through mirror sites in the EU. Rutte wants the proposal as soon as possible to the Union.
Moreover, these measures do not help as a regime a internet ' kill switch ' use and hence the Internet traffic completely will paralyse. At this time is unclear to what extent the State television is still capable of a full program to offer. The head office in Tripoli would be looted and the technical facilities in the broadcasts would be significantly reduced. That would be one of the reasons why Gaddafi his most recent speech over the telephone.
The regime is still capable of broadcasts of international news channels to disturb. The Arabic news channel Al Jazeera and various Lebanese television channels on Arabsat are not or poorly to receive. Broadcasts are to receive via Egypt-owned Nilesat continue and Hotbird.

Phone
In Libya are more than five million mobile phone users out of a population of 6.5 million. (Source: CIA Factbook) There are two mobile phone providers that are under State supervision. The mobile traffic is severely disrupted. In the country itself seem to be able to call people together, but from abroad is both voice and SMS almost impossible. The security service keeps mobile calls and text messages very closely. On the eve of the demonstration on 17 February would text messages are sent with the warning not to take to the streets.
The Libyan authorities seem at this time to focus on blocking phone traffic and satellite links. So is contact with Wereldomroep reporter Hans Jaap Melissen in Libya per satellite telephone hardly possible.

Internet
Internet in Libya is, unlike in other Arab countries, hardly a factor of meaning. According to the latest available figures, from 2009, have no more than 350,000 Libyans has its own Internet access. There are no more than 12,000 direct connections (hosts) on the internet, Internet service providers. For comparison: in 2010 had Egypt there 186,000. At least half the subscribers still uses an old-fashioned modem.
The main ISP is in the hands of the State company Libya Telecom and Technology (LTT). Across the country are known to have seven separate providers actively, but ultimately fall which are all under the direct administration of LTT. This company also manages the international internet 'toegangspoort '. The telecom company has the power the country full of internet. (Source: OpenNet Initiative)

Internet blackout
Directly after on 17 February the Libyan uprising broke out, tried the reign the Internet traffic flat. That led to a weekend with a nightly black-out. Between 1 a.m. and 8 o'clock in the morning was no activity can be observed. Since last Monday they no longer occurred.
The vast majority of the web, including social media websites are accessible. Websites of the opposition are unreachable created through a link in such a way to squeeze that a ' time out '.
Internet connections are slow and unreliable. Also the amount of traffic has declined, evaluations of the Google Transparency Report and the data collector Renesys.

Reporting on-air today; here is the written story from yesterday:

Libyan chaos raises worries over chemical weapons stockpile
Posted: February 24th, 2011 06:30 PM ET
Pam Benson
CNN National Security Producer

Washington (CNN) - The chaos in Libya has raised fears about the security of deadly mustard gas stockpiled in the country and whether Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi might use it on his own people.

A U.S. official said that in a "chaotic situation" there is concern about Libya possessing mustard gas and other chemical agents.

Although there has been no signs that the Libyan leader has ordered their use, Gadhafi is often described by officials as an unpredictable, mercurial individual.

Libya still has approximately 10 tons of the deadly blister agent left in its arsenal, according to Peter Caril, a non-proliferation expert at the Arms Control Association.

'IT WAS REALLY LIKE WE ARE DOGS'

Protesters hit by hail of gunfire in Libya march

By Bassem Mroue and Paul Schemm, Associated Press
Posted: 02/25/2011 12:49:17 PM PST
Updated: 02/25/2011 12:51:57 PM PST

BENGHAZI, Libya -- Militias loyal to Moammar Gadhafi opened fire Friday on protesters streaming out of mosques and marching across the Libyan capital to demand the regime's ouster, witnesses said, reporting multiple deaths. In rebellious cities in the east, tens of thousands held rallies in support of the first Tripoli protests in days.

Protesters described coming under a hail of bullets as they tried to march from several districts around the city toward Tripoli's central Green Square. One man among a crowd of thousands said gunmen on rooftops and in the streets opened fire with automatic weapons and even an anti-aircraft gun.

"In the first wave of fire, seven people within 10 meters (yards) of me were killed. Many people were shot in the head," the man, who was marching from Tripoli's eastern Tajoura district, told The Associated Press. "It was really like we are dogs."

"We can't see where it is coming from," another protester from Tajoura said of the gunfire. "They don't want to stop." He said a man next to him was shot in the neck.

33. Saif al-Islam Gaddafi: "Everything is calm" ~ LOLOL
It appears that the nut doesn't fall far from the tree...

UPDATE 2-Gaddafi son says fighting limited, sees over soon
Sat Feb 26, 2011 12:24am GMT
By Maria Golovnina

TRIPOLI Feb 25 (Reuters) -

<snip>

Speaking in English to foreign journalists flown to Tripoli under official escort, Saif al-Islam Gaddafi said rebels who surrendered would not be harmed and that Libya needed reforms.

His account of the state of the country, however, seemed at odds with the control exercised for the past few days in much of the east by groups intent on ending Gaddafi's 41-year rule and with reports from residents in and around the capital itself.

The London-educated younger Gaddafi said there was no violence outside two western cities and branded as "lies" media reports that troops bombed civilians or were using mercenaries.

<snip>

"Apart from Misrata and Zawiya, everything is calm ... Negotiations are going on and we are optimistic," the 38-year-old Gaddafi said, while acknowledging trouble in the east. "Peace is coming back to our country," he said.

Here's a summary of the main points:

• The UN Security Council will consider a resolution that the Gaddafi regime may be guilty of "crimes against humanity" and refer the case to the International Criminal Court

• The White House says the US government "has decided to move forward with unilateral sanctions" against Libya

• Libya's UN Ambassador Mohamed Shalgham turned on his former ally and denounced Gaddafi in an emotional address to the UN

• Gaddafi's son Saif al-Islam gave a series of interviews, claiming that he wanted to negotiate with protesters

• Pro-Gaddafi forces are said to have attacked protesters leaving mosques after Friday prayers in several areas of Tripoli

• Protests in Egypt, Bahrain and – for the first time – Mauritania saw demonstrators continue to demand reform from the region's governments

41. The Kiss of Treason: or splagnetestai?
22:42 Reuters reports that Gaddafi's son Saif al-Islam has expressed the hope that a negotiated ceasefire can be achieved peacefully "by tomorrow".

Speaking in English to foreign journalists flown to Tripoli under "official escort", he acknowledged that there had been fighting in two western cities: "In Misrata, in Zawiya, we have a problem."

He insisted, however, that the regime had held back and that "the army decided not to attack the terrorists, and to give a chance to negotiation.

Hopefully we will do it peacefully and will do so by tomorrow."

Do IT!!

We can trace the movement of protesters vs. Gaddafi's militias much better with the new information, here's how it went. #Libya

Yesterday after Friday prayers, protesters marched out of Tajoura towards its round about, and into Arradh, into Al-Hani #Libya

(I'll prepare a detailed map of Tripoli soon so you can trace these movements.) #Libya

The protesters were attacked in Al-Hani, before they go on to Souq al Juma. #Libya

These are in fact the same protesters who were widely reported to be heading towards the Green Square yesterday. #Libya

Now the crack down on them which happened at Al-Hani was not by mercenaries alone, this is significant. #Libya

Units from the Khamis brigade (#Gaddafi's son), who are highly trained & armed, were waiting at Al-Hani cross roads. #Libya

Khamis brigade opened fire from anti-aircraft guns. Eyewitness estimates 15-20 killed a least. #Libya

Eyewitness says 15-20 are only the deaths that were around him; given the size of the protest the numbers killed may be far more.

After the protesters dispersed, the Khamis brigade carried out a street-by-street search, shooting anyone else spotted in the area. #Libya

Shooting went on for an hour and a half. Dead bodies were picked up. #Libya

At the time of sending the report, my contact says there were clean ups going on, removing any signs of deaths on the street. #Libya

Now we know that yesterday, Gaddafi placed some of his own protesters in the Green Square and spoke from outside Bab al Azizia. #Libya

If we put the info together, it means Khamis brigade's action yesterday not only to put down protests but to protect Gaddafi himself. #Libya

Perhaps the brutality of what happened at Al-Hani was because Gaddafi was heading to the same place protesters were heading. #Libya

The same thing happened two days ago in Zawya, then an attack was supposed to be followed by a Gaddafi speech. #Libya

...

Bottom line, citizens in Tripoli are unarmed and peaceful protests won't do it any more.

What they mean is that an unarmed movement of peaceful citizens is not going to shake him. He has a grip over Tripoli. #Libya
1 hour ago

He may lose control over parts of the city at times, but this is meaningless if the protesters can't hold them. They have no guns. #Libya

Basically he doesn't mind if protesters take over some areas, he can always send anti-aircraft guns and take it back. #Libya

Strategically all this info shows me that there must be an armed movement challenging him within Tripoli. That will be his end.

While the picture & video upload, take a look at this photo album by Trevor Snapp who managed to reach Benghazi: http://j.mp/hkJYV2 #Libya

48. CNN reported it and aired the video tonight on AC/360
They also aired video footage of a Libyan shielding a wounded merc with his own body to protect him from an angry mob.
