Federal officials reversed their decision to allow former U.S. District Court Judge Samuel Kent, a disgraced former jurist sentenced to prison for obstruction of justice, to be released on furlough this week to attend a family wedding in Houston, his attorneys said.
"It is one of the most random acts of cruelty I've ever heard of," attorney Dick DeGuerin said. "And I'm mad as hell."
The decision to allow Kent, 62, to attend his stepdaughter's wedding — an arrangement that had been worked out with the Federal Bureau of Prisons in advance — changed because of inquiries by the Houston Chronicle, DeGuerin said.
Kent has served 25 months behind bars. He will be released from his sentence in November after serving 29 of his 33 months, according to a Bureau of Prison email. Kent begins home confinement Sunday at a vacation home in the Fort Davis area.
