Five more current and former state lawmakers have modified their financial-disclosure forms, listing gifts received in excess of $500 from the Fiesta Bowl or other organizations.

In addition, state Sen. Al Melvin, R-Tucson; Rep. Karen Fann, R-Prescott; and Rep. Nancy McLain, R-Bullhead City, can be added to the list of politicians whose amended forms reflect a gift or scholarship received from other organizations in the wake of the scandal. All three listed the American Legislative Exchange Council, which advocates for conservative policy initiatives across the country, under the "gifts" section on their disclosure paperwork.
What ALEC laughably calls "scholarships" are reimbursed expenses for state legislators to travel to ALEC conferences, stay at the hotel, etc., so they're readily accessible to ALEC's corporate members and can be sent back to their states with the model legislation those private-sector members want to see passed.
As was pointed out in the
topic linked to in reply 292 of the long compilation topic on the
American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC), this spring ALEC let Arizona state legisators know they could be reimbursed up to $1,900 for traveling to New Orleans for an ALEC conference in August...and at the same time reminded those legislators that ALEC memberships are only $100 for two years. As the blogger who reported this added: "Such a deal!"
At least some of ALEC's puppets are now reporting these gifts.
