Environmentalists protest at NASCAR race
Did anyone watch yesterday's race? When the car sponsored by Dupont won people started throwing stuff on the track.

I guess green NASCAR fans didn't like seeing a win by a company associated with polluting the Earth.

I just don't know if littering is the most effective way to protest pollution.

What do you guys think?

That coupled with the way the race ended and a very similar incident that happened after last weeks race. This kind of crap is classless and dangerous to the drivers. Whether it was protesters or haters.

It's mostly Earnhard Jr. fans, who all seem to think he should win every race.

7. Uh, I think you'll find . . .
. . . that the trash-throwing fans weren't protesting against Dupont but expressing their distaste for driver Jeff Gordon who, in winning yesterday's race at Talladega, passed the late Dale Earnhardt on NASCAR's career wins list (yesterday's victory was Gordon's 77th, I believe). Earnhardt had something like 10 victories at Talladega during the course of his career, and Gordon's winning number 77 at that track, on that particular day (yesterday would have been Earnhardt's 56th birthday), wasn't too terribly well received by long-time fans of #3.

So, no, no "environmentalist" protest here.

Edited on Mon Apr-30-07 08:57 AM by Buzz Clik

This guy, for instance, is the president of the Beaudine County (South Carolina) chapter of the Sierra Club. He and his constituents regularly conduct "Save the Forbs" missions by thinning the predators of endangered plant species. (The local Fish and Wildlife commission calls their activity "poaching", but that's because these government appointees hate endangered plant species.)

Jeff Gordon won the race and passed Dale Earnhardt in career wins. DE who died several years ago, was (and still is) one of the most popular drivers in Nascar.

56. I'm not sure what he expected...
... but I saw this thread early and thought it was a hoot.

My local Indiana paper had the picture on the front page of their sports section (we get two car races per weekend on radio, and no baseball on radio EVER). I'll confess I don't fully appreciate the dynamics of the reaction to Gordon, but the idea that the fans were throwing TRASH because they were GREEN was a riot.

I was more than amused to see a) the multiple corrections to tater's "interpretation" of the incident and b) the level of frustration that some of the posters were showing.

As far as I can tell, no Greens have checked in to show their support for this civil unrest concerning DuPont.

But I'd bet the fans throwing trash are not among the most sober NASCAR fans.

I suspect a correlation, though I've only been to a few NASCAR races and a handful or two of other motor races.

Great fun, great noise, great scenery. And maybe a bit of food and beer.

As a general rule, the fans are pissed if Junior doesn't win.

They are really pissed if Gordon wins.

All bets are off when Gordon wins under caution at Talladega - I've seen it twice, and it ain't pretty.

Had Gordon skipped the post-race burnout, most of this could have been avoided.

They took the throwaway line "Heroes are living on Wonderbread" and wrote a screenplay based on a hero that lives on Wonderbread.

BTW - 2 cup races a year at Atlanta motor speedway brings more money to the metro Atlanta economy (aka jobs and tax revenues) than all of Braves, Falcons, Hawks and Thrashers combined. Do you really think the total energy expended by all those sports games combined is less than 2 races at AMS?

It's going to be damn interesting to see greenies destroy all sports in America because they are a "waste".

Get your information straight before you make absurd comments.

The garbage truck that picks up your crap wastes more fuel in a month than a NASCAR racer does in a season.

And if you ever sailed on a cruise ship, no bigger waste of energy for "entertainment" exists.

32. I had to recommend this one. It's justtoo precious.
Jeff Gordon could drive a car sponsored by a company that made fuel cell membranes, solar panels, energy-conserving housewraps and sewage treatment products, and people would throw things on the track when he won.

Errr...well, DuPont makes all that stuff, so it would have to be ANOTHER megalomaniacal multinational behemoth that had its logo on Jeff Gordon's hood.

And the IRL is already on E85: http://ezinearticles.com/?Fire-Up-The-Still---Lets-Go-Racing-With-NASCAR-and-e85?&id=256745 "The Indy Racing League is already switching to ethanol for the 2007 season with 100% of the cars being powered by ethanol."

44. Boy, THAT's a stretch for the IRL
Indy cars have run on methanol for decades, so they're already set up for alcohol.

The thing is, methanol has 75 percent of the energy of ethanol, so the IRL now has to get Honda (who makes all the IRL's engines) to reduce the fuel flow so as to give the same horsepower.

43. How many Halliburton cars are out there?
I don't know much about racing (it's too loud and I don't want to think what that noise and smoke does to the wildlife around the tracks)

What I have seen shows the capitalistic greed of the military industrial complex using these cars as a way to indoctrinate impressionable youth into a culture of consumption and destruction.

It's just wrong wrong wrong.

I'll bet that Halliburton has its greedy hooks into these race "teams" but am not sure how.

Are there women or minorities involved in this sport, or is this a haven for backwoods, toothless, unshaven, misogynist malcontents? I can just see all those evil Republicans running amok in their SUVs and pickup trucks, and they are everywhere. And not just the ones working in auto dealerships. IT specialists, mortgage bankers, restaurant owners, the kind of people who really take advantage of the proletariat.

It makes me sad. :(

The question, "Are there women or minorities involved in this sport, or is this a haven for backwoods, toothless, unshaven, misogynist malcontents?" was referring to the people throwing their garbage after the race. It is hardly surprising to see a bunch of intoxicated neandertals behave as such, perhaps you have personal knowledge thereof!

I still find it depressing that in this day and age that killing the planet for the sake of entertainment is so celebrated. :(

70. Are you serious?
Do you really believe the military industrial complex is behind NASCAR? Young men (and some women) like to drive fast. Many others like to watch them drive fast. Its really not that complicated.

As for women and minorities, Theresa Earnhardt is one of the most powerful owners in NASCAR. There is not yet a full time minority driver (unless you would consider Juan Pablo Montoya), but an African-American gentleman named Bill Lester ran a few races last year, and NASCAR is working hard to find more minority drivers.

I have been to several NASCAR races, and have been very impressed by the diversity of the crowds.

The subject of this thread was people throwing garbage on a racetrack (for whatever reason), not the drivers or owners.

Back on topic, the negative impact on the environment of this "sport" is not inconsequential. I have no idea how many people go to these things, but I can imagine that tens of thousands of SUV's and even worse, RV's, clogging the highways leave a significant carbon footprint. And the planes that fly overhead? Are they burning ethanol? No, it is oil from the Middle East. Have you seen "An Inconvenient Truth"?

We went into the city after the movie. That's another 8 miles. I have no doubt that you walk further than that to your beloved races. Uphill. Both ways.

I think instead of a serious discussion of things we can do to help the planet (like going for a hike instead of cramming into a toxic arena to watch cars crash at 200 MPH) this is just making a mockery of things.

Frankly, it's tough for me to put into words how ticked off I am about all of this. I usually lurk instead of post and this is a good example why. Enjoy your motorized carnage and alcoholic binges.

87. NASCAR vs. Football
Okay, i'll play. Lets say 200,000 people show up for a NASCAR race. Do you have any idea how many people attend football games during a fall weekend? Between pro (15-16 games, 80,000 per game), and college (multiply that by about 5), you've got perhaps a few MILLION people in SUV's, RV's, etc. etc. It appears the negative impact on the environment from football is considerably worse.

As a NASCAR fan, i don't mind the jabs. Its part of the territory. However, NASCAR is only a small part of the entertainment industry, and by no means the worst offender. It might be worthwhile considering the impact of other entertainment also.

90. That's a good point
Although I don't think people have to drive as far to see football games, they do contribute their share to damaging the ecosystem. But aside from Cleveland fans who hurl milk-bones on the turf, I am not aware of other exhibitions of loutish behavior such as what was witnessed this weekend in Alabama. Perhaps you would know better than I, do football games all have warplanes of death flying overhead in celebration of global hegemony as does Nascar?

93. Loutish Behavior
No doubt about it...some NASCAR fans are louts. But based on my experience they're no more loutish than fans in any other major sport. Yep, some fans threw beer at the number 24 car. I've seen beer, snowballs, baseball bats (one of the reasons they got rid of "bat day" in Philadelphia) at other sporting events.

As for the flyovers, again, sometimes in other sports. Football games, maybe an occasional All-star game. And sorry, as a liberal democrat yet former Air Force member, I'll refrain from calling them "warplanes of death". I'm not too pleased at how they're being used at the moment, and I think we waste too much money on them, but in the overall scheme of things i'm still glad we have them.

102. Oh geez. It has nothing to do with Dupont. Check out the harm of just one race:
- 6,000 to 55,500 gallons of gas wasted (variance comes from listening to NASCAR's version or an environmentalist's version)
- cars are unregulated and have no mufflers, catalytic converters or other emissions control devices
- about 4,500 tires are used and discarded
- for one team 3-5 big rig trucks are used to haul the cars and their equipment and team members - no data specifically on this aspect were searchable
- no statistics available on the carbon footprint of NASCAR fans through the use of fuel-wasting RV's, etc. at the races

Consider that there are at least 36 races in one season and it's a pretty stupid sport to encourage during our global warming crisis.

(AND...let's not forget that NASCAR is just now being dragged, kicking and screaming wildly, into using unleaded fuel)

115. WHAT A RIDICULOUS POST
How exactly did you get the idea they were "environmentalists"? Why did you post this thread without any f**king evidence?

120. It's as clear as a day with no smog
Dupont has a bad environmental reputation

People threw things at a car sponsored by Dupont

Therefore, they were upset about Dupont's environtal record

I hate repeating myself but you asked

121. Yup, that settles it. You clearly are here for my amusement.
Because no one...and i mean NO ONE with any knowledge of NASCAR racing and its fan loyalties could surmise the trash throwing incident was anything but what it was - displeasure with the winner, one "Jeff, everyone loves to hate me Gordon"

Taterguy, you are either very clever for pulling everyones leg or you are clueless.

Either way, it's funny as hell.

124. I couldn't agree more.
I read this in the morning, didn't drop by again until late tonight, and -- OMG -- it had grown exponentially.

Tomorrow morning I hope to see even more posts explaining that it wasn't about DuPont or environmentalism.
