This UNREC feature has GOT to change!

I believe there is a major flaw in the unrec process. yes, it does a good job of suppressing the idiotic threads like this one.

yes, it does end up causing a fairer representation of DU thoughts and what the typical DU person cares about on the "GREATEST" page, but there is one thing missing.

I would like there to be a feature where once a thread has at least 50 total recs/unrecs and the ratio of unrec to rec is 10 to 1, then a little smoke cloud icon is on the post showing us the thing insn't just unpopular--it's Cheney unpopular. Then, people can either rec it back into ratio if they feel strongly about it or people can see it and determine they also want to unrec it.

Once it goes to a 20/1 unrec to rec ratio....it automatically vaporizes. BOOYAH!

I know I didn't join DU to get my jollies zapping "unrecs" on stuff I glanced at and decided I didn't like AND was too lazy to voice (and defend) my view. It's an opinion forum, not a shooting gallery, fer god's sake! If something is "Cheney unpopular" well, you can SAY SO! Think of that! Not only do you say so, you get a chance to get something off your chest and maybe do a bit of really serious thought and consideration of someone's idea. You may end up "unrec"ing it with your dissent, but your voice and your reasoning would be heard/read and maybe a mind or two would be changed. But to just whisk it away with click on the Unrec button is pretty lame in the intellect department!

Come on, folks, if you can't/won't bother to THINK and be challenged and to passionately argue for your cause, what is the purpose of DU?

Perhaps this should be a thread all its own. I could be that we rethink the DU purpose and mission (if that is not too scary a word). What is the point of us being here? I have my own thoughts and I'm sure you have yours. Voting threads up or down in a popularity contest doesn't take much intellectual firepower, unless you discuss why you are doing so, IMO. After all, why bother coming here if not to engage yourself in idea exchanges?

31. I think you make some great points.

There are some posters who could post "shit smells bad" and get rec's out the wazoo, simply because of who wrote the piece. Doesn't matter if it is true, has merit, or what have you, it is simply "popular." Conversely, a poster could say "rape is bad," and that thread could be voted into oblivion via the unrec. Personally, if there needs to be a change, it needs to be to the system. Make it to where one can only recc/unrecc if the poster posts something; of course, that wouldn't stop the "K&R"/"K&U" posts, but there would be some very obvious transparency.

At the very least, it should only be permitted to people who have a thousand postings and who support DU financially. If you aren't committed to the positive growth of DU then you don't have a say. A sort of put up or shut up rule.

I won't use the Unrec. Not that anybody should give a crap. But the way it works is ridiculous because it invites abuse.
