Least not down here, anyway...geez, you would THINK that THIS is something that would have BI-partisan support.

http://blogs.chron.com/texaspolitics/archives/2009/05/gopers_oppose_p.html

It might seem fairly obvious that a state with a dismal record of registering younger Texans to vote would try to make it easier.

They barely passed a bill Monday night that would allow high school principals to appoint four deputy registrars to help 18-year-old students sign up to vote.

The bill passed, 73-72, before a roll-call verification vote to make sure all members had properly voted. The verified vote was 72-70 for the bill. However, the outcome could change during a final vote on Tuesday. All 70 opposition votes came from Republicans.

"You are taking a principal and directing them to register voters. We know in some school districts that will be done in a very partisan fashion," Rep. Phil King, R-Weatherford, said. Texas ranks behind 41 other states when it comes to registering 18-to-24-year-olds.

1. NEW GOP Advertising campaign!
Ad 1: "If you are under 40 and vote, your penis will fall off."

Ad 2: "If you are under 40 and vote, your tits will fall off."

That's about as truthful as anything ELSE in a GOP ad!

2. Did Phil King explain that asinine statement?
How does registering voters become "partisan"? There are laws in place that say all registrations must be turned in, even the "gag" registrations. Of course, this provides Republicans an excuse to bash community organizers. So it's a win-win all around for the GOP swine.

Are you sick of it yet, Texas? Does this kind of neanderthal thinking really represent your state?

3. Amazing how Republicans are actively discouraging the public's obligation to civic duty.
But, his "partisan" rationale is wrong. The fact is, Republicans are losing the youth vote 2:1 because their policies suck and they have proven themselves unfit to lead this country. Discouraging voter participation in a democracy is anti-democratic. Why do Republicans hate America?

9. Exactly..anyone who has been a volunteer deputy registrar knows that
messing with the system at all will get you in a shitload of trouble. You SIGN all the paperwork as well as the receipt the voter-to-be gets. They are just looking for excuses/soundbites for people who don't know that little tidbit of info.

When I volunteered at voter registration drives it was always the repukes (you could just tell) who approached the table, frowning, asking "WHO are you working for...". Um, NO ONE, but we are representing the county election office..."**volunteer** deputy registrars"

4. Almost wherever you go, there are more
Democrats than Republicans. The more people the Republicans keep from registering, the fewer the votes for Democrats. They also don't want young people and liberals sitting in jury boxes.

8. Pretty sure that was the repukes reasoning for trying to block it
Imagine having all the urban high schools registering kids en masse..then compare that to Po-Dunk High in the middle of a barren red county trying to register all, oh, 5 kids eligible to vote.

5. The same goes for
women, black people, Hispanics, Asians, gays, bisexuals, straight gay-rights supporters, unionized laborers, liberal Protestants, Roman Catholics, Orthodox Christians, Jews, Muslims, Buddhists, atheists, free-thinkers, the poor, the middle class, people who live in big cities, and probably a few other groups of people that aren't high on the Repukes' list.

Seriously, it's hard to wonder how a party that is basically a lobby group for wealthy, old straight white conservative Protestant men is even remotely competitive these days. There's so many groups...not just young people...that lean much more to us than them, especially in the last election. And as the demographics continue to shift, the Republicans have two choices...either adapt, or become politically irrelevant.

7. Being a republican
is getting to be a pretty exclusive club.....a rich old white man's club. Only 21% of the population self-identifies as republican.
