Is the Republican Party a threat to Democracy?
At the moment they are weakened, but they are still a threat to our freedoms.

This is a party that has ruled this country from 1980 and it took them less than three decades to run us off a cliff.

Yeah, I know. We had Clinton in there for eight years. But after his first two years he had to deal with Newt Gingrich's Republican congress that told him to go fuck himself on every issue that mattered to Democrats and every other sane human being.

We now have Barack Obama, a man who will perhaps rank among our greatest presidents. But the remnants of the Republican Party are fighting him tooth and nail and using every propaganda outlet they own and control to demonize and destroy him.

And therein lies the threat. He is trying everything possible to put Humpty Dumpty together again and is being fought every step of the way by those who caused the destruction.

I really wish that the vast majority of Americans were more aware. I really wish that most people understood who is victimizing them. I really wish that the Democrats who now control the government could wave a magic wand and make the "bad guys" go away. But it just ain't gonna' happen.

Most of us believe that politicians control our country and, to some degree, they do. But bankers, Wall Street, multinational corporations, and a handful of tremendously wealthy individuals have far more to say about our daily lives than do we.

And until we understand that and find a way to change it, we will always be serfs, powerless and screwed. And, oh yeah, the Republican Party will continue to represent the powerful and will be an ongoing impediment to us and what we think America should be.

Read the book 'the authoritarians' by Bob Altemeyer.

There is another book I haven't gotten around to reading yet called 'american fascists' by Chris Hedges that makes the same claim. The base of the GOP have a psychology that is basically fascist and the only thing stopping them from turning the country into a protodictatorship is they don't have the power to do it. But they are trying to get it.

Is the GOP a threat to democracy? No. Ron Paul and Barry Goldwater are not threats to democracy. However are right wing authoritarians? Yes. Obama has only been in office for 100 days after winning a valid (aka non-stolen) election and they are already calling for violence, treason and assassination.
