The Economy has Affected My Cheese Purchase...
Or maybe greedy companies have, not quite sure on that...

I just got back from the local Kroger, and finished preparing four veggie burgers and added two slices of provolone cheese to each of them. I thought it was strange that there were only eight slices in the package instead of ten. I always have two left over. Before I discarded the wrapper I decided to have a look, and sure enough it said that the package only contained 8 slices and weighed 6 oz.

Two weeks ago it had 10 slices and weighed 8 oz.

It still cost the same...

2. It really sucks...
I remember reading an article posted here a couple of months ago discussing how peanut butter jars were being made with a hollow spot on the bottom so that the jar would be the same size but contain less peanut butter. Of course they charged the same as they always had.

4. Cheese has become a luxury item
The prices have so soared, it puts me off. I love cheese, but some things are just unacceptable, although I'm lucky and can afford them.

I like smoked provolone on pizza. The 8 oz package I always got at Harris Teeter was 3 bucks. So, 6 bucks a pound for that particular cheese didn't strike me as unreasonable.

Last time I went to buy it, it was 4 bucks. Same size.

So I didn't buy it.

But, I see from the HT circular that they're having a "buy one, get one free" sale on their deli items, including the smoked provolone, so I'll be there this week, stocking up.

What are people going to do, people who are living so close to the edge now? We're in a depression, regardless of what anyone says...........................

7. Smoked provolone makes a fantastic veggie BLT
Just render it out in a heavy frypan until the fat is in the pan and the cheese has turned a golden brown.

It's better'n bacon!

It might even still be a little cheaper.

14. That's a very interesting idea
It doesn't melt?

I ain't giving up my bacon, but that does sound wonderful, but I don't understand out it doesn't turn into the great gloopy mess it turns into on my pizzas.

20. It melts and then it renders out the butterfat and then it toasts.
You need to keep a close eye on it, but you'll end up with a crunchy, golden, crispy wafer that makes a great BLT.

21. Can you turn it?
I just keep getting stuck on the idea of the cheese melting.

Gonna give it a shot, though. I'm convinced that nothing can spoil smoked provolone.

18. That's my favorite low-carb snack.
I "fry" cheese until it's crispy and the fat has run off the griddle.

I use one of those lean grill thingies.

9. I've noticed this with other items, as well.
I bought a bag of Ruffles chips the other day and they were 3.99! (I remember not that long ago the bag being much bigger and costing much less)

10. $3.99 for a bag of chips?
That's criminal. Then again, this cheese was Kroger's generic label and they still screwed me.

12. Thank god for the Dollar store.
When I was away for a few years, I missed it.
But Trader Joe's was available, so almost a trade-off. Really good quality food at decent price.

Now I am back in Dollar store land, no Trader Joe's, and the Fresh Market and other type stores are 90 miles away.
In any direction.

N0 wonder Super Wal-Mart is popular out here in the hinterland.

But prices rising fast even in Dollar Store land, and one has to be very careful of what brand to buy, since there are a lot of strange products glowing with China ingredients.

What we used to buy routinely we now stock up on only at sales:
coffee
cheese
meat
condiments

17. The Dollar Store and Swiss Cheese..Deja Vu all over again...
Edited on Wed Jan-07-09 10:28 PM by lib2DaBone
I stopped at the Dollar store tonight and stocked up on paper towels, laundry detergent, trash bags.. etc., can't go wrong. Looks like other folks doing the same. Must be a Rod Sterling moment or something like that.

Then I went to the supermarket next door to get some Ham and Swiss for brown bag lunches. A small package of Swiss was $6.99! I couldn't believe it. I put it back.

Only one question: How come when gasoline goes down in price.. it usually goes down a penny a week over manny months. Yet when the price of gas goes up.. it jumps 50 cents in one day?
