Republicans in Deep Doo-Doo for 08
If we can't win in 08 - we can never win. Look at our competition:

1. McCain - Old Warmonger (not that there's anything wrong with old)- Most US against the war.

2. Romney - Little experience - Any of our potential candidates could surely out-debate him. Country ready for a Mormon?(not that there's anything wrong with Mormon)

3. Gulliani - Personal Affairs would bite him - dirt will fly. Not conservative enough to bring the right wing-nuts out in droves.

4. Gingrich - Actually said his wife wasn't pretty enough, young enough, to be a first lady and she had cancer. Thinks blow jobs are ok (does not constitute cheating). Told his wife he wanted a divorce when she was in hospital with cancer. Cheating when chastising Clinton.

5. Brownback - Sorry, just too plain ugly (not that there's anything wrong with ugly) and he's said some really crazy shit - even for republicans.

6. Huckabee - Well, I don't know much about him as far as negatives. Only know he used to be fat (not that there's anything wrong with fat).

1. I'm not that worried about the Pres race...
I'm more concerned about the dozen or more Senate seats that will be in play.

We need to win a LOT of those seats.

2. Yes. We need to make big gains in the Senate and get more House seats.
Adding 6 Senate seats would make a big difference in Washington.

4. predictions for senate
The Hotline
In February 2007, The Hotline's Chuck Todd named Mary Landrieu (D-LA), Norm Coleman (R-MN), John Sununu (R-NH), Susan Collins (R-ME), Tim Johnson (D-SD), Gordon Smith (R-OR), Elizabeth Dole (R-NC), Max Baucus (D-MT), and Tom Harkin (D-IA) as the ten most vulnerable Senate incumbents from most to least vulnerable.<1>

CQPolitics
CQPolitics.com produced their first analysis of the 2008 Senate race on January 26, 2007.<2> They rank the contests accordingly:

Eight Republican seats (AK, ID, KS, KY, MS, NE, NM and WY) are considered Safe Republican, meaning the races are not expected to be competitive.
Seven Republican seats (AL, GA, OK, SC, TN, TX and VA) are considered Republican Favored, meaning the races are not currently competitive but could conceivably become so under the right circumstances.
Five Republican seats currently held by Susan Collins (ME), Norm Coleman (MN), John E. Sununu (NH), Elizabeth Dole (NC) and Gordon H. Smith (OR) are considered Leans Republican, meaning the race is competitive but the Republican has a distinct advantage.
Two seats, currently held by retiring Republican Wayne Allard (CO) and Democrat Tim Johnson (SD), are rated No Clear Favorite, meaning no party has a distinct advantage.
One Democratic seat currently held by Mary Landrieu (LA) is considered Leans Democratic.
Four Democratic seats (AR, IA, MT and NJ) are considered Democrat Favored.
Six Democratic seats (DE, IL, MA, MI, RI and WV) are considered Safe Democratic.

13. I'd much rather add 9 seats in thr Senate!
51 + 9 =60...PLUS the Presidency which would allow for OUR VP to take the arrogance out of Leiberman!

15. At least we need to overcome the LIEbermann situation...
We're stuck with him for 6 more years, but we need enough Dems to beat down his defection.

I wouldn't be surprised if he actually turned to an R soon. He's virtually one now.

8. Domenici will bow out. Problem is, NM Dems haven't got...
...a real standout candidate to put up for the seat. That won't matter if the GOPpies are dumb enough to run that skanky cow Heather Wilson for the seat, 'cause any credible Democrat could probably beat her. But if the GOPpies stick with a lower profile, marginally competent candidate, it could be tough.

informatively,
Bright

14. Too bad David Igelsias, the dismissed US Atty, is not a Dem.
IMO, with all the publicity he is getting, he has name recognition and I would believe public sentiment behind him. Wonder if he would switch and run against Domenici or Wilson (depending on which runs) in 2008?

Wouldn't that be a lovely payback?

33. That could work, 'cause conservative Democrats are the ONLY Democrats...
...who do well in most parts of this state. If he publicly changed Party affiliations, he could clean up. Question would be, are the NM Dems smart enough to grab that over whoever's currently next in the queue?

I don't know state Party well enough to give an opinion on that.

thoughtfully,
Bright

34. Sure seems like something worth exploring.
IIRC, the last Dem candidate for US Senate from NM was not pushed that hard because a pretty foregone conclusion that Domenici would win.

But...the ideal of Igelsias running as a Dem...even a conservative one...intrigrues me. Even as a lib, this is interesting.

5. You left off Fred Thompson--caught him by accident on the drive
home from work the other day, he was subbing for Paul Harvey. I heard this annoying southern fake-folksy moron voice and immdeiately switched channels. And then I said, wait a second! And switched back to listen to about 10 more seconds for confirmation, became nauseous, and hit the button again. That voice ain't gonna fly for anyone north of Tennessee or west of Missouri. Sounds like a used-car salesman, and he's ass-ugly, old and sick-looking to boot. Good luck with that.

6. I agree
They have 4 serious candidates (and I'm being generous to Romney). Three of the four are insufficiently conservative to fire up the base and all four promise to continue the same foreign policy as Bush (a foreign policy it seems people are sick of.

I don't know how they finesse this; but obviously it's a long time till the election.

11. BINGO ...
Rudy is scary ... The media is doing it's part in hyping him up, and that is a big part of how we got the current disaster we have at the white house ...

Lets review, Rudy is a philandering piece of garbage who as late at 2000 broke up with his wife in a press conference, has dressed up in drag countless times, including once having his neck nuzzled by Donald Trump, and in his first marriage was married to a distant relative ... He has a history of being pro-choice, pro gun control and pro gay rights, was the mayor of a NORTHERN city, all things that singulary, in and of themselves would discount someone for any card carrying republican ...

But, he is a swarmy little puke and was the mayor of NYC on 9-11 ... These freaks have an absolute and never ending worship of 9-11, it is ALL they have, and to them, by being the mayor New York on 9-11 AND being a republican, he basically was touched by the hand of god ...

As you noted, these morons got FULL behind the most horribly ill suited president we have seen in our lives, and did it TWICE ... There is NO doubt in my mind that the media will continue to hold Rudy's water for him, and send the message the republicans want to package this guy up as a "tough keep us safe" guy ... I am sorry, but as much as I think Hill would be a solid president, they have stunk her up enough that if it her and Guiliani, I hate to admit it, but we would have Guiliani as our president ...

He proudly tells enthusiastic audiences of dozens, he's running to win, has raised $300,000, and should be taken seriously as the GOP Candidate who talks about the really important issue: fully funding the border fence.

12. Guilliani's appeal to wingnuts is underestimated
he'll run the same kind of psychological warfare campaign on Americans exploiting 9-11 and terra terra terra... the wingnuts may just hold their noses and support Guiliani.

Personally, I fear his candidacy. He is B*sh redux... a true fascist.

We'll have to get very dirty to tarnish that 9-11 halo.

16. You know that Dame Rudy and Weathervane McCain beat Dems in many polls, right?
There were polls showing Dame Rudy beating Hillary in blue states like PA, and NJ, in addtion to beating her in swing states like FL and OH.

If Dame Rudy is the nominee (who knows how possible that is) we are in for problems. MSM will NOT tarnish the mythical hero of 9-11, and I don't expect most Americans will dig very deep on the candidates.

25. And when I look through all of the polls
I get the sense that Dame Rudy and Weathervane McCain beat our Dems most of the time. Our biggest concern should be with Hillary though, as she has about 100% name recognition. Plenty of people don't know who Obama is, some don't know who Edwards is (which is pretty pathetic) and very few people know who Richardson ad all the other 2nd tier candidates are. Hillary doesn't have a lot of room to improve her numbers, the other candidates do.

32. The base might eat that up, but not the Dems and Indies who
would have to cross over to vote for that schmuck for him to win the general. He's not going to excite anybody. He doesn't even excite his own party--they think he's a tax-raiser. He'd be the John Kerry "Electable" guy if he does somehow manage to win the nom, and then he'll lose. The odds of two American presidents coming from the same tiny town in Arkansas have to be quite small.

31. The MSM Has Decided That It Shall Be a Race Between Guiliani and Hillary
If that happens, we lose the election by a landslide. We probably lose the House too.
(The Senate will revert to Repiglican rule some time this year when Lieberman switches parties).

I don't know if any Democrat can beat Guiliani, but Gore has a better chance than anyone else.

Guiliani has a closet full of skeletons, but nobody will ever see or hear about them.

in the early polls with what is happening in this country and world today and with Bush at an all-time low then we can't be confident of victory in '08--I hope we will win, but at this point I think it's 50-50.
