Southwest Missouri mayor charged in Internet child sex sting
The Associated Press
DIAMOND, Mo. | A small-town mayor is in jail in Newton County on four counts of soliciting sex over the Internet from a police detective posing as a 13-year-old girl.

Police said 62-year-old Allen Kauffman was arrested Friday and remains in jail on $50,000 bond.

Kauffman is the mayor of Collins, a town of about 200 people in St. Clair County about 50 miles northwest of Springfield.

Police said Kauffman was arrested after an investigation by police in Diamond in Newton County.

Court records show Kauffman did not have an attorney as of Monday morning. A phone message left at his home was not immediately returned.

Diamond police said Kauffman is married and serves as a pastor of the Temple Lot Church in Collins.

1. serves as a pastor.
I anticipated that as I was reading this.

The more I learn of these religious figures, the less I'm interested in religion. I'll stick to being agnostic.

2. Do you think pervs like this are representative of all Christianity?
I have no problem with your agnosticism, but I wouldn't judge all Christians by the actions of some of their very worst adherents.

Off-topic: Regarding your screen name...I LOVE chimichurri on asado! You're not from Argentina, are you?

3. I think a lot of pervs are looking for something to help them control themselves...
... and that's why they turn to religion.

But there's no guarantee that joining a church will change a person's nature, so some them end up in the news.

That's what I think, anyway.

5. the priest we grew up with molested a bunch of boys in our youth
group and is now living comfortably as a financial adviser in Jersey City somewhere, in a sanctuary run by Catholic brothers.

What should my perception be?

I don't blame Christianity itself but I do believe people who are predisposed to this type of behavior will use religion as a shield. This particular priest played his piety card quite convincingly. He had us all fooled for many years.

6. What should your perception be?
It should be that that priest was one sick scumbag.

I wouldn't extrapolate it to condemn all people of faith.

In that part of MO, it would make sense.
