being a Muslim and how that could possibly change our standing in the Muslim world and how they perceive our country and government? They think we hate Muslims. If Obama was elected, do you think the fact that his father was a Muslim would make a difference in how the Muslim world reacts to us? Do you think if we elected the son of a Muslim it would make them think that perhaps we don't really hate Muslims after all? Do you think it would give Obama an advantage in dealing with the ME? OR, would him now being a Christian make the whole issue a non-starter in the Muslim world?

1. I think our behavior is the governing thing.
It couldn't hurt though.

2. Muslims kill other Muslims with regularity
Hell of a theme for the general election: Vote for Obama and the Muslims will spare us another 9/11.

6. Does that mean you don't think Obama's father being a Muslim would matter AT ALL?
 I didn't say it should be a theme for his election. I asked if that fact would matter in the Muslim world.

3. I doubt it would make much difference.
Obama barely knew his father; I think his parents split up when he was about 2 and he didn't even see his father for years afterwards.

4. After reading Obama's story of how he became a Christian (in his book
The Audacity of Hope), it felt like an intellectual, pragmatic choice for him. My guess is that
the Muslim world would see it as rejection of his father, which is not a good view.

7. I am not sure how much that would change anything. Benazir Bhutto
was muslim and so is Musharraf. There was clearly a deep rivalry between them. The point being that Muslims can hate each-other.

But I agree, the potential benefits of Obama's father being an ambassador to the muslim world are positive. However, I would not expect that to undo what has been been done over the past 7 years.

IMO - grassroots xtian fundies of the Huckabilly ilk do far more damage than the good that Obamas father could do.

9. I doubt the people of the Middle East care who we have as Pres.
As far as those governments, they will continue to do what they think is in their best interests regarless of who we pick.

As far as al Queda - they just want us all dead. Obama and Mitt too.

10. Good question...
I can't see how it could hurt. Actually...if the process plays out in anything like a democratic fashion, I think it could possibly change the world view.

11. most muslims i know
are very kind nice people. they are very devoute but since their religion is a peacefull one (taken in context, christianity is supposed to be peacfull to but how many wars have been started in its name? ) I don't think it would matter if his father was muslim just like i don't think it matters if clintons mom was catholic. its the person who is violent or radical not the religion.
