THE scandal over a bogus leaflet campaign in the western Sydney seat of Lindsay has "absolutely stuffed" Prime Minister John Howard, former Queensland premier Peter Beattie says.
The controversy has overshadowed the Prime Minister's campaign since the husbands of Lindsay Liberal candidate Karen Chijoff and outgoing MP Jackie Kelly were caught letterboxing leaflets purporting to be from a fictitious Islamic organisation praising Labor's support for the convicted Bali bombers.
Mr Beattie said the incident, which led to the expulsion of three Liberal Party members, had "stuffed" Mr Howard's efforts in the last week of the campaign.
"I don't think anybody who could look at this objectively could conclude that John Howard has won the last week," Mr Beattie said.
