When does it become too late for an Al Gore Presidential run?
I read here a while back that there was an early November primary that would represent an end to any chance of his entering if he misses it.

Does anyone have the scoop on that?

Thx.

1. I don't, but really, it was months ago.
Coming in late hurt Fred Thompson so bad, and he's been in a long time. Gore can't run at this point, its not going to happen.

2. What hurt Freddie was that he opened his mouth
and when nothing came out, his support faded quickly. The emperor wannabe had no clothes after all.

I don't think it's too late for Al.

Edited on Mon Oct-29-07 07:37 PM by MUSTANG_2004
I really thought that his movie was the prelude to his entry in the race, but he is clearly not running. It's only a few months before the first primaries, so if he were running, it would have happened.

It's too bad, since he was my first choice by far of the current crop. That is based on the 2000 Al Gore, not sure if that would still be true, though.

8. First off- and I suspect you'll be pleased to hear this- I think if he hasn't made an
official announcement in 2-3 weeks, it's not happening.

But as for a November 2007 primary, I don't think so: The Iowa Caucus is on Jan. 3 '08, I think- most primaries are Feb. 5.

Wikipedia Primary Calendar Link

There may be deadlines to appear on various state primary ballots. I'm not sure what they are, but that may be the source of the Early November information you're thinking of.

11. Thanks. The discussion I read here a week/two ago mentioned an early Nov. primary
as being about the last chance he'd have to make his move.

Why do you say "if he hasn't made an official annoucement in 2-3 weeks, it's not happening"??

Specifically?

12. Because I think it will really be too late, at that point, and I'm sure he knows that.
Every day I give slimmer and slimmer odds that Gore gets in. The window is still slightly open, but not for much longer.

As for specifics; I think the deadlines to appear on the ballot are a specific time limitation factor- like I said, I can't find an easy link to what they are state by state but I know they exist- but beyond that, I just think given the amt. of time and energy it takes to mount a serious presidential run, if he hasn't jumped in by the end of this month or the first week in the next, he's just not going to do it. You have the first primaries in January and the rest on Feb. 5. That may seem like a long way away, but it really isn't.

And if that's the case, C'est La Vie. We have an excellent field and I will be happy to support any of them in the General next year.

by which you have to get your name on the NH ballot. It's Nov. 3rd, I believe. And other primaries have similar cut off dates.

15. Here's a serious answer
Edited on Sun Oct-28-07 12:32 AM by JMDEM
If he doesn't declare by Dec. 3rd, he'll miss out on about 16% of the delegates, as the filing dates for several states' primaries fall before that point.

If he goes beyond Dec. 3rd (filing date for NY primary) and Dec. 4th (filing date for CA primary) he doesn't have a chance. Unless the convention gets deadlocked in July.

So realistically -- Dec. 3rd would be the last possible date in my opinion. Assuming he could just roll out the needed signatures in NY and California at a moment's notice.

BTW -- I'm a huge Gore fan. I really want him to run.

17. I'm just speaking numbers, friend
If he misses CA and NY, I don't see how he'd recover enough delegates in other states. I think switching your pledged vote as a delegate is a huge no-no that is just never done. (Political suicide.)

I have a suspicion that you want him to run as much as I do.

There's always the chance for a deadlock in July. In that case he could theoretically step up and say "I'm available".

Your suspicions may need some re-calibrating.

I don't think I'm breaking any DU News (or rules) to observe that the OP has repeatedly stated strong opposition to a Gore run in numerous threads over the past 6 or so months. Check the archives.

Personally, I want Gore to run, I think he's the best person for the job.

But the clock is running out, that much is clear.

Given the number and frequency of hysterical threads you have started railing against a Gore run, I'm surprised anyone hasn't noticed.

Really, I don't care- but they're your threads and your opinions.. It is odd that you get so bent out of shape when someone notices a pattern to them. And you know as well as I do that I'm not the only one who has made that observation.

"Stalk" you? No, I really don't give a shit. But I am curious as to what you're going to be on about once it's obvious he's not in the game.

You're delusional.

As I said, I've expressed my opinion. In the last 6 months, I started two, MAYBE three threads about the subject. They were calm, reasoned, logical expressions of my opinion.

But I don't have to explain myself to you, and you shouldn't be calling out posters and making dumb accusations about their past behavior. You got a problem, report it. Otherwise, shut it.

And I'm not "bent out of shape". Maybe that's your problem, you're constantly getting the wrong impression of reality.

I'm surprised that you haven't noticed how often I post about global warming. Obviously you've performed a search on me, and yet you think I'll have nothing to "be on about" once it's obvious Gore's not in the game. I guess that's your perception of reality problem again.

But, sorry, your saying "shut it" (charming!) doesn't mean I'm not going to say what I damn well please, including any observations about your previous expressed opinions on this very subject. If YOU have a problem, report it.

Beyond that, you can dress up in Napoleon Gear and stomp around your house if it makes you happy, but that doesn't mean anyone here is going to do anything except laugh when you try to issue your little orders at us.

I'm waiting to see how events unfold. If Gore is running -- and I am a diehard Gore supporter -- I suspect he will not follow any politics-as-usual procedures. I will say he's the only candidate I would actively work for with enthusiasm at this point. When a candidate is chosen at the convention, and if it is not Gore, I'll vote for that candidate.

18. Al Gore isn't running for the presidency, he is
strolling to the presidency, and he has all the corporate selected candidate D&R scared shitless.

In 2000 the corporate selected candidates, the politicians, "we the people" and the media let him down, Al Gore isn't going to let that happen again, he atleast needs to know that he has the People behind him this time, the one and only thing Al Gore needs is to have the People behind him.

The People can put a stop to a corrupt supreme court decision, The People can put a stop to all the election lawsuit bullshit all we have to do is Hand Count ALL the Paper Ballots.

So I think it is up to "We the People" are we prepared to DEMAND that all the paper ballots get counted. If not, I wouldn't run if I was Al Gore.

If Al Gore believes we are prepared to TAKE IT TO THE STREETS,day after day, week after week until ALL the votes get Hand Counted, he may run. If not, he may as well keep doing what he is doing.

ARE YOU PREPARED?

27. I actually looked up all the filing dates, recorded them, then lost them...
Gore could slide until Dec. 3rd. He'd miss NH, and I think some relatively big ones -- Illinois? Missouri? North Carolina? But my math at the time said this was about 16% of the population of the US, so I am assuming about 16% of the potential delegates. But he sure couldn't let New York and California slide, which hold almost 1/4 of the US population. That's why I set Dec. 3rd as the hard deadline for fishing or cutting bait.

I've had similar issues.

It is a good question. Unfortunately I can't help you, but about halfway through reading the responses came to a similar conclusion as one of the other posters.

Who says he would run as a Democrat? Although, I really can't imagine he would want to split the Dem vote.

I know absolutely nothing about the process. It's about as clear to me as the methodology of NASCAR rankings. But thanks for asking. I'll check back in the hopes that someone will man-up and give us the straight dope.

Do all states allow write-in candidates? Some? None? A few?

What happens if people write in Gore's name and he gets a huge chunk? Maybe he runs? If not, what happens to those delegates? Free-for-all in July???

45. he'd have to be filing a lot of paperwork with a lot of secretaries of states
"Most jurisdictions require write-in candidates to be registered as candidates before the election"
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Write-in_candidate

just looking at the google search for how you get to be a write in candidate it looks like in missouri, california and texas (to name just three) you have to file papers with the secretary of state

my daughter was an election judge and told me that in order for a write-in to be counted in illinois the person's name had to be on a list that was given to the judges. anyone coming in to vote could ask to see the list and choose a name from it to vote for, but the list was never offered to anyone. and if you don't know that there is such a list well, too bad.

but, they have something on him or a loved one and he's not going to run

that's what i think i'm seeing

i know i have things about me or my family that i WOULD NOT allow enemies to go after - even to change the world

you have to be willing to sacrifice your family - because they'll be gone after. they have something on Gore.

you would think they'd be terrified because he could just TAKE the whitehouse

they aren't the least bit worried about him, he's been neutralized somehow. they're looking at Hillary. he is a non-entity to the repugs. they know they have him where they want him

and, no - he'll never tell anyone. we'll just be left to wonder why he doesn't run

They "have something on him or a loved one", so he's not going to run?

You actually think someone approached him, Gambini style, and threatened him or his family with something and because of that he's rolled over?

with all due respect, that's qwacked.
