Editorial: Attorney general nominee assumes doofus stances

After a promising start on Capitol Hill, President Bush’s nominee for attorney general suddenly adopted the guise of a simpleton.
Water-boarding? Gee, what’s that? The nominee, Michael Mukasey, insisted last week he didn’t know “what’s involved.”

Torture? Gee, what’s torture? “I think it would be irresponsible of me to discuss particular techniques with which I am not familiar …”
Illegal acts in the executive branch? Gee, what’s illegal? “If by illegal you mean …”

<snip>

Most troubling was Mukasey’s suggestion that the president can supersede federal law.

<snip>

The Constitution? Gee, what’s that?

1. Mukasey should allow himself to be used as the subject
in a demonstration of water boarding so he can fully underestand it.
