Mike plans to return tonight to deconstruct Bush's supposed "victory" in the Jose Padilla case. According to an editorial in today's New York Times, "It is hard to disagree with the jury’s guilty verdict against Jose Padilla, the accused, but never formally charged, dirty bomber. But it would be a mistake to see it as a vindication for the Bush administration’s serial abuse of the American legal system in the name of fighting terrorism.

"On the way to this verdict, the government repeatedly trampled on the Constitution, and its prosecution of Mr. Padilla was so cynical and inept that the crime he was convicted of — conspiracy to commit terrorism overseas — bears no relation to the ambitious plot to wreak mass destruction inside the United States, which the Justice Department first loudly proclaimed. Even with the guilty verdict, this conviction remains a shining example of how not to prosecute terrorism cases."

So to encourage Mr. c to do it, I buy vacuum cleaners (one upstairs & one down) with cute little bells and whistles to keep him interested. The Hoover upright illuminates a red light when it's sucking up dirt, and it turns green when the carpet's clean. This keeps him fascinated enough to finish the job.

Mom's companion had 4 bypasses during his surgery today. According to his surgeon, "we don't do doubles, triples or quadruples anymore, we just go in to fix what's wrong."

My response to his daughter was, "gee if I punch him in the face once and then again, would he count that as 2 or just what needed to be done?" She and my Mom :rofl:

So far, he's doing well, but he has some complicating factors, so we're hoping that he recovers well! :hi: again

And thanks, he's pulled through great thus far, but he is a diabetic and has had some lung problems, and these are the concerns with his medical team. I spoke with Mom a couple of hrs. ago and she said he was still out of it. I did have to mention that I've never had anything that major done, but I do remember waking up to - something is hurting like hell- and my thought that if he's still asleep at this point, it might not be such a bad thing. She laughed, remembering her hysterectomy and the pain that she was in, and she seemed to relax a little. I'm hoping for the best for both of them, especially after she told me that they've been planning to get married for a while before he got sick in FL in the early spring!

...needs to really listen to what Mike had to say about the pastors who were willing to be dupes.

There are a lot of good people who do good work for religion. I, though feel that, in this case, a few bad apples eventually spoil the whole bunch. I will support anyone who wants to reform religion (the Christian church in particular) into a helping thing, and try to get it to stop being so eager to work with an unholy government.

For me, though, it's impossible to be religious and not feel tainted with the current range of pastors who are drunk on temporal powers and wealth.

What Mike reported on the government's co-opting of willing pastors to keep the population docile and obedient is disgusting, appalling, and comes very close to erasing what goodwill I have toward most churches, and nearly completes my disillusionment about American Xtianity in general.

Amongst my acquaintances I no longer think of them as churches but as outlets, and the system they supports isn't worship but the Worship Industry. That the government seems willing to use pastors, cynically, as pacifiers (using the same Bible chapter that Hitler did to compel authority) is not surprising. That so many pastors are willing to do as the government asks them would be more heartbreaking if it weren't for the fact that televangelism has been disillusioning me for years.

Generally speaking, pastors and religion have done much more to push me toward atheism than any atheist ever does. Because if they treat the religion they venerate so, how much of it can I actually take seriously.

I was a good little kid but religion (RC in my case) wasn't a big factor in our family life, so we drifted away.

Then, as a young collegian, I craved my Mother Church's presence and came, of my own voliiton, to confirmation. Still one of the proudest things I ever done. Then fell away as I got disillusioned with JP2's stance toward woment, gays, and liberation theology.

Then, recently I came back...but then, Pope Cliffy (Benedict XVI) and the apparent undoing of Second Vatican and the safe haven for scary groups like Opus Dei, which should not be, period.

I can't stand the hypocrisy. It pisses me off to no end every time I hear the Church threaten to withhold the Communion sacrament or excommunicate Catholic politicians who are pro-choice. Notice how the same threats are NEVER made to Catholic politicians who support the death penalty or Catholic Governors who preside over executions. When the Church did it to Kerry during the 2004 election (under the instruction of Joey Ratz himself), it indirectly endorsed Bush.

I actually got "Cathoicism for Dummies" (yes, there really is a "for dummies" book on the RC) and after that, got myself a copy of the Catechism of the Catholic Church (it's available in paperback). I fell in love again with the deep, deep intellectualism of the RC faith, appealing doubly because it calls the fundamentalist eschaton (the Rapture, that is) for what it is–complete and utter bullsh*t.

And then I met the worldly church again. And fell back out of love with it.

In retrospect, I only have myself to blame. That's the pity. I should have known better.

We're doing okay here. Mom's companion had a quadruple bypass today (even though the surgeon didn't want to call it as such), and thus far he's doing well.
