Phil Donahue Strikes Back

Phil Donahue Strikes Back
By NY Observer.

On a recent Friday afternoon, Phil Donahue was sitting in a dimly lit production studio in midtown Manhattan when a reporter entered. Mr. Donahue looked up. He was wearing a checkered dress shirt over jeans and sneakers. Under a crop of shaggy white hair, his big blue eyes bulged mischievously.

He offered a mock warning to his fellow film producers in the studio. “Now watch what you say,” said Mr. Donahue. “We have a member of the mainstream media in our presence.”

These days, the godfather of daytime television is no longer a card-carrying member of the club. Ever since February of 2003, when MSNBC cancelled his nightly talk show, Mr. Donahue has been wandering through the outskirts of the American media. Recently, he has settled into an unlikely role: a TV icon turned freelancing filmmaker.

“What can I get you to drink,” said Mr. Donahue. “A shot and a beer?”

Mr. Donahue was in from Connecticut for the afternoon to put the final touches on his first feature-length documentary, Body of War. Mr. Donahue recently described the movie as a “non-nuanced, anti–Iraq War documentary,” about a “heartland kid who suddenly went from a social life of single bars and courtship to a daily routine of catheters, puke pans and erectile dysfunction.”

1. One thing's for sure - we are seeing a *renaissance* of documentary making...
What the 60's was to music, WE are in the age of the documentary.

Thanks to Michael Moore, who proved you can make money, there's a TON of non-MSM documentaries out there, and coming out, and I think it's GREAT.

Progressives Have The Mojo Now

Submitted by Robert Borosage on June 22, 2007 - 11:09am.

The Take Back America Conference this year drew 3,000 leaders and activists from 40 states, 150 speakers, a bloggers’ boulevard and radio row larger than ever, and an energy that couldn’t be contained. This year was not only a larger gathering than any previous year; it had a very different spirit.

We witnessed the gathering of a movement that has come into a sense of its own power. Certain that the elections in 2006 mark the end of the conservative era that has dominated our politics for more than 25 years, progressives gathered confident that they were driving the political agenda and that they were on the verge, in fact, of taking back America.

There is both remarkable consensus and passion around a core agenda: ending the occupation of Iraq, affordable health care for all, a concerted drive for clean energy, and an aggressive change in economic policy to make the new global economy work for the many, and not simply the very few. In each of these areas, progressives have put forth detailed plans and are building major issue campaigns.

Progressives do so confident that the American people are moving our way. Three in four Americans want a new direction. Most have given up completely on the Bush administration. They are not neutral about what comes next. On issue after issue, from ending the war to affordable health care to government leadership on clean energy –- broad majorities embrace progressive views. That’s also true on a broad range of divisive social and economic issues. This is not a conservative country.

9. That's a good point
I've been wondering where all the anti-war songs were. I guess they're being replaced by documentaries.

2. “See the pain,” said Mr. Donahue. “Don’t sanitize this war.”
It is so true - we have to let the American people in on the secret that their fellow American's are dying to line the pockets of the Republican elite. It may be painful to those that have lost loved ones but they deserve the truth.

6. It works both ways...

every once in a while I come across one of the many photos of people falling/jumping out of the Twin Towers and the rage surges all over again.

But I'm all for the truth -- the whole truth if there is such a thing.

8. Fine by me- show that, too.
It'll only piss people off and get them engaged all the more. I mean, Bush is so busy chasing Halliburton profits and neocon wet dreams in Iraq that he "doesn't spend any time thinkin' about" bin Laden.

12. It just goes to show ya..if given
enough time there is Karmic retribution.

This is undoubtedly where Phil Donahue is going to shine now..still gettin' down with truth. Only now it's on his own terms and he doesn't have to kow tow to msnbc's "MARCH TO WAR!!" :nuke:
