Remember the slave labor story from China. The Chinese government has fixed the problem
They tore down the evidence and has stifled press coverage about the topic in China.

No link. This story was reported on TV by Asia-Pacific News out of Australia

About time someone did something about that pesky slave labor. Good to know that problem's solved.

5. Why is such a repressive, evil country allowed to host the Olympics?
Or does the IOC not heed it's own ideals?DE

6. Hitler's Germany was a host.Leni Riefenstahl did the docudrama.
>sigh< The whole point of the Olympics is supposed to be getting all these athletes together for peaceful purposes, good clean fun as it were.

Nationalism wasn't supposed to be the main theme -- ahem -- yet somehow it is. That and money.

8. That country is the homeland of one-fifth of humanity.
And most Chinese are very patriotic. They have a lot to be proud of compared to citizens of certain Western countries. No Chinese military is occupying other countries, killing women and children left and right like certain other militaries. Who should be ashamed and who should be proud?

10. Tibetans might disagree with that
Many of them feel occupied by China.

11. I agree
They shouldn't be allowed to host until they meet certain standards of human rights AND leave Tibet.

12. And they might agree with it as well.
Many of them are fine with being Chinese citizens, especially those who are former slaves and descended from slaves. Many don't want to return to the slave-owning theocracy.

13. Wow. Recent news has demonstrated that China still has slaves in factories.
China has SERIOUS ongoing human-rights violations.

As for the Tibetan people -- there is ample evidence that the Chinese occupiers are engaging in a program of quiet genocide via sterilization, in addition to their program of cultural extinction.

All that in addition to holding the papers on our debt and being careless with our pet food and human medicines.

As Doonesbury once put it when Uncle Duke was ambassador to China and met Honey: "An especially tricky people."

Beware of idealizing their government and culture: they are not us, and the European Enlightenment upon which so many of our ideals are based was and is alien to them.

I am not a scholar of Asian cultures, but it was my undergraduate degree and I maintain an interest.
