WTF! After Everything That Has Been Revealed-Bush/Gonzales Team Continues To Purge Voter Rolls
Edited on Fri Jun-15-07 07:37 AM by kpete
The work continues.

The Bush/Gonzales Justice Department begins proceedings to purge voter rolls in North Carolina using trumped up claims about potential vote fraud.

This is of course in the pattern of earlier DOJ efforts to sue to have rolls purged in other swing states.

N.C. pressed on voter listings
State, feds say rolls out of date, push changes; official says no need
DAVID INGRAM

RALEIGH --State and federal officials are mounting two broad challenges to the way North Carolina maintains its voter rolls, charging widespread irregularities that include votes cast under the names of dead people.

The accusations attempt to call into question the accuracy of registration records and election returns from 2004 to the present.

So far, though, the officials have not made public any evidence of irregularities, and N.C. election officials argue that the state's maintenance of voter rolls is among the most careful and comprehensive programs in the country.

The dispute comes amid growing national attention to suspected voter fraud. The U.S. Justice Department has devoted more resources to that area -- a decision that voting advocates say could disproportionately affect minorities and the poor ahead of the 2008 election.

5. There aren't nearly enough votes to make it stick. We'd look as stupid as the R's did with Clinton.
Frustrating? Yes.

13. Yet "looking stupid" didn't stop the GOP from maintaining power for the next several years.
In fact, it's kept Clinton's so-called transgression front-and-center from that moment on, referenced continually by those on the right *and* left and has ensured that it will always be referenced as part of his legacy.

20. Actually it is better that it be done now and not just before an election like was done in OH.
Voter rolls do need purging as folks do move around. The problem comes when folks don't check their registrations before an election OR purges occur just before an election. It is easy to check when you have access to a computer, BUT the GOP target low income minority precinct w/o access. I think the Dem Party needs to go through the purged list and set up community checks in low income precincts.

9. Yesterday's Senate hearing focused on this issue
Edited on Fri Jun-15-07 08:42 AM by L. Coyote
Too bad you missed the hearing. It is so easy to assert a negative, but really, it just shows that you are missing some important events. You can still catch up by watching the hearing on C-SPAN.

Nominations to the Federal Election Commission are usually a routine affair. No more. Bush's politization of government is being confronted by Dems on many fronts.

16. So how does a HEARING stop this??
It obviously doesn't. We've already had hearings. There've been news reports. The people involved KNOW they're doing wrong. They are going to have to BE STOPPED, perhaps physically restrained, not just reported on and exposed.

They are trying to find ways to STEAL another election. Congress has got to stop these crooks === right now. Indict them and show the country that rove is still in charge of the dirty common tricks department. Why can't they find something on wilted turd and send him to jail.

12. That's the only thing funny about this - they are having to put theft operations in place
in formerly red areas like San Diego and North Carolina. What next, Utah and Idaho?

They have no base.

14. And if you're a minority, poor, and already "in the criminal justice system"
Let's not even pretend anyone will ever listen to you.

In my local paper today there was a story about a grandmother who'd been working for the Kerry campaign in 2004, and made the mistake of casting a vote, when she wasn't allowed to, for having had some kind of conviction. The lady actually made an effort to have her vote "withdrawn", but was told not worry about it.

A 3-judge panel denied her appeal:

...You want to bet that similar cases in the past -- say, the Eisenhauer years, or the Kennedy years, or maybe even the Gerald Ford years, were handled differently?

I'd be curious to know.

21. Why should they stop?
Checks and balances are a joke today.

And NO ONE in the Democratic leadership is really doing anything.

They seem to be comfortable wearing their blinders.
