I know our government is doing everything within reasonable means to gather information to thwart the next terrorist attack against us.
I agree with the surveillance program if:
1) It taps the phonelines of ONLY suspected terrorists who have been identified by FBI, CIA, NSA as a threat (i.e. a person living in the US, not neccessarily an Arab-American, who is flagged for an illegal or suspicious visa, is changing residence often, or who is enlisted in a suspicious activity like flight school or advanced chemical training) and all the while maintains communication with someone in another country
2) If it eliminates uneccessary steps in a slow approval process for a court order (currently a 72-Hour Emergency court order is the best our government can do; otherwise there is a review process that involves members of different bureaus signing off for approval and it can take weeks)
Before crucifying the President for breaking the law (which hasn't been proven yet, but very well could be soon) consider the reasons why this action may have been taken. Is it to make you safer? Is it one of the major factors why we have not seen another attack, while all along Al-Qaeda has vowed coming attacks for 4 years?
Let's be serious about this. Do you really think the government wants to waste resources in a time of war on unuseful information gathering? When the review is completed of this secret program, Senators like Kennedy and Clinton and the public will see the demanded results of this program. But unveiling a tool in the war on terrorism to our enemy will only allow them to learn from their mistakes and improve their communication to terrorists within our country. THIS IS A VITAL MATTER OF NATIONAL SECURITY AND SHOULD NOT BE USED AS A REASON FOR IMPEACHMENT!!!!
