Edited on Sun Aug-06-06 02:21 PM by cboy4
I was flipping around channels just in time to turn on the race on NBC to see someone bow their head and say, (blah blah blah) "...built upon your principles in the name of Jesus Christ, amen."

I understand racing is a mostly Freeper love affair, but I happen to be one progressive who enjoys auto racing.

I CANNOT STAND THE PRAYING AT SPORTS EVENTS.

Actually, I can't stand it anywhere in public.

We gunna start having pilots pray on the public address for a safe flight?

We gunna have weather anchors tell viewers to bow their heads during newscasts while they pray that it's a sunny weekend for everyone?

Open praying should take place in church....I don't need to listen to that bullshit while I'm trying to watch a car race or doing anything else in public!!!!!!!!!!!!

2. Was this a Nascar race?
I normally call it AssCar by the way...

I am also a fan of racing, but mostly sports car and F1 for me. I avoid AssCar like the plague.

About praying in public, I hate it. Keep that crap to yourself, or damnit I am praying to the flying spaghetti monster loudly, right next to you.

3. We had to listen to a prayer before the fireworks display on the
4th of July. :wtf:

We went to a water park a couple of weekends ago and all of a sudden some guy comes over the PA and announces the number of baptisms they performed there in the morning. Lots of holy talk followed, which was followed by "Amen" and "Praise Jesus" from lots of people at the park. :wtf:

6. Oh I agree 1000%
My dad was a high school coach. I used to ask him why they prayed in the locker room. When I was about 6, I said "Daddy, what if the other team prays too?" LOL

That said, I do know where you are coming from. Public prayer sessions give me the creeps.

9. If I were God
I would find it offensive to have to listen to prayers about meaningless sporting events all day long. I've never been comfortable with the praying in the locker room thing because I think it reduces God to not much more than a candy dispenser.

11. Let us pray, because JEEEEEBUS wants ME to win this car race!!!!
Let us pray, because JEEEEEBUS wants OUR TEAM to win this basketball game!!!

What does it say about the Son of God...that he's not just invisible, but he's also a partisan invisible asshole??? If Jesus is responsible for the victory of one, then he plots the defeat of another.

These invisible controlling authorities really care about this shit??? What a foolish construct...!

Of course, it could be that he's got his eye on the sparrow, and a hundred bucks to win on Lucky Lady in the fifth, perhaps?????

13. What can one expect from a 'sport' born from running moonshine?
On the one hand, we have the notion of 'sport' and athletics that goes back further than ancient Greece where the aesthetics and health of the competitors were appreciated, and on the other we have grade-school dropouts peddling illegal alcohol and driving at breakneck speeds.

Wow! Sure makes me proud of the American sense of 'culture.' :eyes:

14. On airplanes in the Muslim world. . .
the pilot will often say, "insh'allah (god willing) we shall soon be landing."
Fair enough. Different culture, etc. I don't know about you though, I don't want god involved in any part of my landing. I want a trained pilot on a sound aircraft.

But, really, with our very own fundies you can't win. There was an incredible incident on Air Canada or Canadian Airlines about 20 years ago. The airline had just switched some of its aircraft to Airbus, and there was some confusion over the meaning of a particular reading (and that device wasn't working fully anyway). In any case, they didn't put enough fuel on the plane. So, midway across Canada, they run out of gas. It turns out the pilot was also an experienced glider pilot in his spare time, and so he glided this airbus to a landing at an abandoned airstrip. I call that some dynamite flying and that pilot a hero.

You can't win with our own taliban (the christiban?). They would call it a miracle and say that god put that pilot on that plane (overlooking the further conclusion that their god shortchanged them on the fuel as well).

15. Here's a little magic "Public Prayer Repellent" idea...
Print up a bunch of business-size cards or even slips of paper with this message on them:

"Matt 5:5-6"

Whenever you're near someone praying in public, smile sweetly at them and hand them one.

Works like a CHARM.

devoutly,
Bright

5 And when you pray, you must not be like the hypocrites; for they love to stand and pray in the synagogues and at the street corners, that they may be seen by men. Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward. 6 But when you pray, go into your room and shut the door and pray to your Father who is in secret; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you.”

17. A couple of years ago there were severe weather and tornado warnings
I called my fundy neighbor and told her that they were saying all people in our area should go to the basement. She was sitting in her 2nd floor bedroom reading her Bible and said she wasn't going to move- she didn't need to go to the basement because she had asked God's angels to protect her. So I said that's really dumb, do you really think you shouldn't use the common sense God gave you- so she pointed out my lack of faith. God will make sure the tornado only hits those who don't pray; getting to a safe place is a lack of faith.

I got off the phone and went in the basement. The tornado missed our area but hit 100 homes in a nearby city and killed one. I can't help but think that the people who think this way are less likely to survive a tornado.
