My "Conspiracy Theory" about Bush and the New York Times...
Everyone in the country is guessing that Bush is playing politics with the NYT story, about the tracking of the banking information. Bush and the GOP talking heads are busy on every channel on the TV, telling us that the investigations by the Government were on "international accounts" only! I don't believe it for a minute. I think the government was monitoring domestic transactions also, just like they were tapping domestic calls. At first Bush and the GOP accomplices said that the NSA was only listening in on international calls and that was bald faced a lie. I think Bush and his gang are lying again, about the depth of this banking thing.

How can anyone, still believe, ANYTHING that bush says? So flame away about my tinfoil hat, but I refuse to take it off as long as the fools and the fooled rule.

1. Have trouble believeing the NYT these days too. Their run as the paper of
record ended a while ago.

5. I agree.
I am highly suspicious of the attacks on the NYT in light of the unprecedented assistance provided by The Times to BushCO over the last few years. I am not totally convinced that the publishing of the banking story and the attacks by the right wing were not previously coordinated between Keller and Sulzberger and BushCo. In short, I have a very hard time believing that the group running the NYT has suddenly found religion and are playing straight with America. It is equally likely that the whole affair is simply another psyop designed to make the NYT appear credible and to hide the real details of the spying program

7. I've thought that maybe the NYT was really a player in Bush's...
little game here, to maybe try and save face in a round about way. Playing like they are holding Bush's feet to the fire, to rescue their sorry image of late. Bush and the NYT may even be in cahoots on this cooked up propaganda coup? The NYT has been a powerful tool for Bush and the DOD...they(Jeff Gerth)even started the Whitewater thing rolling.

2. Are we not to be distrustful of our government?
That is what the founding fathers built into the Constitution, checks and balances. Doesn't seem to be working too well right now, but I thought that was the original plan.

3. Welcome to DU Sherman
Americans have been shamed so much for upholding the founding father's wishes, plans and dreams for a better America, that we are afraid to ask questions anymore. I think the founders fought a war of independence, so that Americans didn't need to EVER, live in FEAR.

4. I agree with you
I still haven't heard a plausible explanation for why the NYT hasn't defended themselves with their own 2005 article on the exact same story, complete with input from US gov't officials, other than that the whole thing was a scam to strengthen BushCo's argument for curbing the press.

Based on their history of flouting privacy laws and lying through their teeth about it, I suspect BushCo are tracking domestic money movements as well.

Watching editors squirm provides good sport

Gene Lyons

As one with firsthand experience of The New York Times’ arrogant condescension, I’ve enjoyed watching its editors get a comeuppance.

Back when the newspaper invented the Whitewater hoax, executive editor Joe Lelyveld accused me of "wild and shoddy journalism" for deconstructing its coverage. Declining to appear at a Harper’smagazine forum at the National Press Club, he maligned my work in a privately circulated letter to Timessubscribers alarmed by its revelations. Typical.

In the end, my reporting held up. Badly written Times dispatches filled with semi-facts and half-truths did not. Reporting a $200,000 real estate deal ain’t brain surgery. Correct the errors, fill in the blanks and Whitewater’s "scandalous" aspects disappeared.

But Timeseditors chose to help GOP partisans hogtie a president rather than write a correction. Had Lelyveld paid attention, he might have been spared the Wen Ho Lee fiasco, among others. Alas, for years the newspaper’s unvarying response to outside criticism has been, "We’re The New York Timesand you’re not." More...

I started reading Gene Lyon's stories in 2001 and this man has had the Times and the GOP pegged all along...

10. Have you seen this resolution introduced June 28, 2006 HF?
What's your take on it?

Looks really horrid to me. Gives * free reign and a pass on his crimes, silences leakers and whistle-blowers, and muffles the press (worse than now)

It was voted on in the House yesterday! Is this on a fast-track?

Am I just being an "alarmist"?

H. Res. 895

Resolved, That the House of Representatives--

(1) supports efforts to identify, track, and pursue suspected foreign terrorists and their financial supporters by tracking terrorist money flows and uncovering terrorist networks here and abroad, including through the use of the Terrorist Finance Tracking Program;

(2) finds that the Terrorist Finance Tracking Program has been conducted in accordance with all applicable laws, regulations, and Executive Orders, that appropriate safeguards and reviews have been instituted to protect individual civil liberties, and that Congress has been appropriately informed and consulted for the duration of the Program and will continue its oversight of the Program;

(3) condemns the unauthorized disclosure of classified information by those persons responsible and expresses concern that the disclosure may endanger the lives of American citizens, including members of the Armed Forces, as well as individuals and organizations that support United States efforts; and

(4) expects the cooperation of all news media organizations in protecting the lives of Americans and the capability of the government to identify, disrupt, and capture terrorists by not disclosing classified intelligence programs such as the Terrorist Finance Tracking Program.

11. Everything they do needs to be carefully watched...
That the country might finally be watching and questioning, scares the hell out of the GOP. They are cowards and their military records prove that!

If the fools are watching you and me they are wasting all our money! If they are wasting our money they are helping the REAL TERRORISTS of the world. They(the neoCons)are either with us or against us and it looks more every day, like they are against the American people at every turn! The GOP leaders want to destroy our country, as badly as Bin Laden wants to, IMHO!

19. The media must stand up NOW! I keep hoping the cabal
will finally piss off the media enough and it will end up in "no holds barred" reporting of truth.

Yeah, I'm naive with a little hope left in me still. :)

Unless the media shoves the truth down the sheeple's throats, we are massively screwed. No kiss, no vaseline. If it's not on the teevee, they don't think it's real. Argh!

And I don't see it happening. The NYT story apparently was "edited" by the gov, iirc.

Smoke and mirrors everywhere we turn.

for a long time. If they have nothing to hide, why are they ALWAYS going out of their way, to hide things?

20. The problem is that there is MUCH evidence, but we
have been stifled in getting the info out there by the corporate media.

I see now that it's being told that WMDs seem to be all over Iraq. An old paint can may even qualify under the standards the neocons use now!

Enough already.

13. Since I read "Overthrow" I've learned that the NYT has
shilled for every single war of aggression we've waged, starting with the Mexican American "war". It sets you back, really, when you see the machine in action generation after generation -- and each one has to learn the same lesson over and over.

But, better late than never. :)

they don't care how many commoners die for their bank accounts either. It's the military industrial complex's bank accounts that should be studied and kept track of. The gun runners always win EVERY war.

15. To me conspiracy theory means wild, baseless speculation. I see none here
You speculations are perfectly in keeping with past behaviors of this administration. Among other problems with their "NY Times story reveals how we've been tracking alQaeda finances" story is the fact that teh administration has been bragging for the last four years that they've been doing exactly that. How is a story verifying that they're doing what they've been trumpeting they're doing "revealing state secrets"?
