FALWELL: Illicit sex today. Today the world has gone sex crazy. Illicit sex has become the downfall of many in the Bible. Movie stars not married to each other, having babies and making headlines all over the world as though they were doing some great thing. Big deal! Just another moral pervert. And for them to become heroes for our kids. My wife and I will be married 49 years the next anniversary.

Old testament is crap and if you had any history of the bible under your belt you would know that this particular verse was not about homosexuality but a pagan practice.

And as a Christian I recognize the Old Testament as our history, back when God was a vengful God who thought nothing of striking dead people, cities and/or nations.

But he gave us Jesus, his only son as a covenent to us that our sins were forgiven and that we simply needed to love God, love our neighbor and do unto others as they would do unto us.

Don't shame us Christians with your narrow-minded bigoted viewpoints from historical parts of the bible not recognized by most Christians.

And btw, if you have ever eaten at a Red Lobster - may your soul rot in hell!

Sounds like a narrow interpretation to such a strong admonition. Many years prior to the book of Leviticus the story of Sodom and Gommorrah. Apparantly God was not too pleased with the sexual debauchery of rampant homosexual behavior as described in Genesis 19:4. The cities got destroyed when you read it. Today we live under grace and mercy of God for us to admit our sins and receive salvation from Jesus Christ. I know that riles up a few of you but just sharing the info. Glad to be on the DU forum.

Sorry for the oversight! I was so pissed off and wound up in my rant (as you could tell) that I forgot that Canada recently joined the list of countries that provide marriage protections to all couples, not just opposite-sex couples. That's really great for your country! I look forward to the day that the United States can join you, but I doubt that it will happen any time soon.

A rabbinic tradition, described in the Mishnah, postulates that the sin of Sodom was related to property: Sodomites believed that "what is mine is mine, and what is yours is yours" (Abot), which is interpreted as a lack of compassion. Another rabbinic tradition is that these two wealthy cities treated visitors in a sadistic fashion. One example is the story of the "bed" that guests to Sodom were forced to sleep in: if they were too short they were stretched to fit it, and if they were too tall, they were cut up.(compare Procrustes)

The Talmud also recounts the incident of a young girl (some sources say it was a daughter of Lot) who gave some bread to a poor man who had entered the city. When the townspeople discovered her act of kindness, they smeared her body with honey and hung her from the city wall until she was stung to death by bees. (Sanhedrin 109a) It is this gruesome event (and her scream, in particular), the Talmud concludes, that are alluded to in the verse that heralds the city’s destruction: "So Hashem said, ‘Because the outcry of Sodom and Gomorrah has become great, and because their sin has been very grave, I will descend and see…" (Genesis 18:20-21)"

Also, from the same article:

"There is no Old Testament text in which yadha specifically refers to homosexual coitus, with the single exception of this disputed Sodom and Gomorrah story in Genesis. The less ambiguous word shakhabh, however, is used for homosexual, heterosexual, and bestial intercourse. Shakhabh appears fifty times in the Old Testament; if it had been used instead of yadha in the Sodom story, the meaning of the text would have been unmistakable. Based on this interpretation, we lack conclusive grounds to assume that the men of Sodom only wanted to rape the visitors. We simply know that their intentions were unfriendly."

There is alot more at the link. It does state that Christains believe this story deals with punishment for homosexuality, but since the Old Testament is originally Jewish, I tend to give the Jewish interpretations more weight.

Also, you speak as if we all are Christians here, and should believe as you do. We are not, and we do not. You will do better here if you try to remember that.

that in these times.

Ezekiel and Jesus himself said that God destroyed Sodom (along with the other 3 cities) for their uncharitible ways, their pride and inhospitibility.

Ezekeiel 16:49-50:"Now this was the sin of your sister Sodom: She and her daughters were arrogant, overfed and unconcerned; they did not help the poor and needy. They were haughty and did detestable things before me. Therefore I did away with them as you have seen." God states clearly that he destroyed Sodom's sins because of their pride, their excess of food while the poor and needy suffered; sexual activity is not even mentioned.

Luke 10:10 But into whatsoever city ye enter, and they receive you not, go your ways out into the streets of the same, and say,
Luke 10:11 Even the very dust of your city, which cleaveth on us, we do wipe off against you: notwithstanding be ye sure of this, that the kingdom of God is come nigh unto you.
Luke 10:12 But I say unto you, that it shall be more tolerable in that day for Sodom, than for that city.

So once again, I say to you that if you're going to claim to live your life by the Book, to the service of the Lord in sharing His Gospel around the world according to the Great Commission - please take your head out of you ass long enough to learn what the damn thing says. You might make better progress that way - misquoting makes you a false prophet, something else Jesus Himself warned about in these times.

I'm pretty sure you didn't intentionally wander in here to willfully do the work of Satan himself, shut down your computer, go into your closet and pray for forgiveness for the Blaspheme you've committed here.

some angels almost got mobbed. Frankly, I find the supernaturals aspects of Christianity about as pagan as Mithras and Osiris. How is it that some Christians can decry witches and what not and believe this stuff? Almost nothing in the Old Testament is historical. Its allegorical and meant to be thought about and considered with skills the fundamentalists in the early church burned and persecuted out of existence. And we are all the poorer for it. (Google the Dead Sea and check out the explosive features of it. Don't take my word for it.)

more than once. Actually, what I say is: "Since lesbians are never mentioned in the Bible, I guess that means that God and Jesus love us." Or, when I had people say stuff about AIDS being punishment for gays: "Well, since there's never been a lesbian to contract HIV from girl-on-girl sex, I guess that means that we're the most blessed and loved by GOd."

You haven't done much studying of the bible and Obviously you didn't even get a clue about the verses from Matthew that I posted. But as a lifetime practicing Christian with a minor in Religion from college, let me tell you that you are absolutely way off base.

Obviously you've read one verse out of Leviticus? Have you read the rest of them? Do you know that Leviticus, along with Genesis, Exodus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy are books that are recognized in all 3 major religions. Isn't it funny that how the laws as stated in Leviticus were also the same ones practice by the Taliban in Afghanistan - a fundamentalist muslim country.

There is nothing in the bible the condones homosexuality simply because it's a non-issue in the bible. Hell the bible wasn't even a creation of God but a creation of a 3rd Century Roman council that got together and decided with books would best promote Christianity and their own purpose (like Render until Caesar).

That doesn't mean the bible is bunk and for many of us, like myself, it is a source of love & inspiration. But that's because I follow what was in the Gospel which is what was Jesus teaching and actions. And then I try to live a life where I show the same love, respect and compassion to others that Jesus has shown.

So riddle me this you Fred Phelps wanna-be - Find me one verse in the Gospel where Jesus condemns homosexuality. I don't care what Jewish Leaders pre-Jesus said and I don't care about what Paul said. I want Jesus's words here.

Leviticus is a book of various religious rules that one particular culture chose to impose upon its people. Leviticus 18:22, which would appear to "outlaw" homosexuality, is the most frequently quoted rule. Let's take a look at some of Leviticus' other rules:


Leviticus 19:19: "Do not wear clothing woven of two kinds of material." (I'll bet you're wearing a cotton/poly blend right now. You sinner!)

Leviticus 19:27: "Do not cut the hair at the sides of your head or clip off the edges of your beard." (You better have that long-haired hippy look goin on. You know, like Jesus.)

Leviticus 11:3: "You may eat any animal that has a split hoof completely divided and that chews the cud." (Bacon for breakfast this morning? Split pea with ham at lunch?)

Leviticus 11: 9: "Of all the creatures living in the water of the seas and the streams, you may eat any that have fins and scales." (No deep-fried shrimp. No clam chowder. No oysters on the half shell. No crab legs. No lobster tail. No no no!)

Leviticus 25:45-46: "Moreover of the children of the strangers that do sojourn among you, of them shall ye buy, . . . and they shall be your possession . . . they shall be your bondmen forever." (It says shall buy the children of strangers to keep as slaves. So... how many do you own? And is Child Protective Services aware of this arrangement?)

Leviticus 15:19-24: "After menstruating, women are unclean for seven days, and anyone who touches a menstruating woman (as well as her clothes, her bed, or her furniture!) is considered unclean." (I certainly hope you aren't sleeping in the same bed as your wife for about half the month.)

laws. All of this shit doesn't apply to them because they don't have to keep the laws, including getting circumcised to be a follower. It was a big thing between Paul, who wanted slack rules and James and Peter, who wanted the rules followed to the tee. So, all your bloviating doesn't apply. Paul 'won' and so we don't have to follow your 'rules'.

None of them have studied theology, cracked a commentary, read Hebrew, studied Koine Greek, took a comparative religion class, went to a a service or ceremony of a religion differing from theirs.

(ex-Catholic who studied theology and Koine Greek for several years, as well as minoring in Comparative Religion AND teaching CCD... even after I knew I liked girls and didn't really believe in the Christ motif any more)

There was civilization on this globe for FOUR THOUSAND years (approx)after the deluge/flood
and prior to the Yahweh/Moses event.
Historical evidence abounds.
Earthlings, prior to Yahweh, revered a female creator being who actually came down often and mingled with us. Along with many others who had powers unimaginable to our simple minds.
All of the old testament is fabricated re-tellings of old tales.
Sodom and Gomorahh were nuked. (more abounding evidence: all of the vertical faces of building remains and the cliffs that surrounded the plains that the two cities were located in are 'glassified' (melted rock).
