Is "An Inconvenient Truth" Gore's "Profiles in Courage"?
Edited on Sat Jun-24-06 03:12 PM by Gidney N Cloyd
Partly in the sense of it being a non-political sidestep toward the nomination?

2. Y'know, I can think of a number of people who'd

make me feel comfortable with them as president. Gore's the only one I can think of who'd make me feel happy.
A little off topic but it just occured to me.

6. I agree with you on the comfortable and happy business, but
would add Feingold to the very short list.

13. I like what I see of Russ so far but
I don't yet have that sense of him that makes me go 'yeah, President Feingold <smile>; as it should be.' I'll keep an open mind.

8. I certainly hope you are right!! Every time I mention the fact that......
.....I think Al Gore is the only one who can take the neocons on - head to head - and beat them at their own game.:yourock:

"Gore's the only one I can think of who'd make me feel happy." :applause: I agree totally!!:headbang:

One thing for sure, some people at DU hate the very mention of Al Gore running. To them it's almost as bad as news of Hillary running might be.

12. "some people at DU hate the very mention of Al Gore running"
I don't know if it's all that similar to Hillary. In Gore's case I think mostly there's some residual 'why didn't he stand and fight?' issues but with Hillary, I think (besides a few WTF? votes) it's less personal, more a practical worry about the anti=Hillary forces effect.

9. As a result of your post, I just realized why he isn't running...
Certainly, anyone with half a brain or a little wisdom is okay with Gore as president but to a public of rather closed minds, he makes them feel damn uncomfortable. He's a bit out of step with the times when it comes to overall mental approach. People in America need a real actor, who can lie like a nazi at Nuremberg to make them feel all warm and fuzzy inside. Who wants a leader that thinks and conducts himself like Galileo for Christ's sake! I might start a SAVE THE CHIMP-THINKERS FOUNDATION.

19. I think you are right---
Al lost in part because of the Clinton sex meltdown and a poor public image.Gore has more to say than most other candidates.Hillery has that same baggage, plus a poor poll rating, and a woman. We gotta get a viable candidate out there, and Al Gore fits that slot.

3. Yes
Good analogy. I'm not sure but I think Nixon had a book in between his first and second presidential runs - Six Crises?

If he ran in '08, Gore would be by far the most well-rounded of all the candidates, having experience in the military, journalism, academia, the corporate world, the legislative and executive branches, and now the film industry. ;)

7. Yes, I get the strong sense that Gore will "make himself available--"
which is a different thing than running for the nomination. He's using this period to good effect in more ways than one, first by getting the environmental message out, but also by giving the public a chance to get to know him in a non-candidate context. It'll be a lot harder to pin him as "wooden," "stiff," "humorless," "a serial liar," etc. when the public has a better sense of him as a real person. He's pre-empting his own image control rather than letting KKKarl and KKKaren do it for him.

10. Great point on "image control."
And another good reason the DVD will make a nice christmas present for an undecided near & dear to you.

11. I agree, he could make himself available for drafting
if the people want him.

A leader isn't a leader just because he declares he is. A leader is chosen to lead by the people who need and trust him.

15. Wouldn't that be a hoot! A politician chosen the way the
Founding Fathers most likely envisioned: By popular acclaim.

There were some bad sides to them, though. Machine control, backroom deals, etc.

18. Popular Acclaim by the chosen few!
That's what the electoral college was all about. They didn't trust the people to make the choice, and remember at the time, the people who voted were white, property owing males 21 and over. Women, Africans, Native Americans, and the youth were totally locked out of the power elite as well as landless white men. Universal manhood suffrage didn't come about until Jackson was president, and I'm sure he worked to that end since it was those landless white males who supported him. Think of Indian Removal Act and Trail of Tears! Jackson also made a bundle being a land speculator and selling off Indian land.
