I'M THINKING OF STARTING A GROUP ABOUT MEDIA,
including media effect on political and other public matters.

My point of view is that the media fails its responsibility to inform the public about significant public matters. We will discuss this and other matters as we work to develop a mission statement.

Please let me know what you think about this. An 'official' group requires 10 active participants.

Thanks

Ellen

1. Hope it works Ellen!!
I think its a great idea, and we will need it for the PRIMARY and the GE. I am so sick of the real qualified RW pundits and corporations dissing all those that have the interest of the American people, stumping for the American Idol!!!

4. Democracy Now
'While the world’s oldest democracy, the United States, spends trillions of dollars claiming to bring democracy to Afghanistan and Iraq (through the barrel of a gun), what have we got here? A process driven by major donors shoveling huge sums of cash into the troughs of television broadcasters, who are holding the electoral process hostage through their control of the public airwaves. The same broadcasters arbitrarily exclude viable candidates from their so-called debates, elevating themselves to kingmaker.'

5. Great idea
I think the Media has a profound effect on our electoral process and has the ability to make or break candidates, especially the ones who have chosen not to take for the interest groups and hence don't have large sums of money to buy air time.

6. Would this be similar to FAIR's role?
Fair and Accuracy In Reporting is something I used to catch on one of our local NPR stations. Truthfully, I looked forward to the week's worth of media analysis, and what passed the "accuracy test". It called attention to anyting from the O'Reilly's and PBS's "unbalanced" panel discussions.

If this is the aim, then my next question would be how to slice the media up. Example: I have a REAL problem with listening to NPR All Things Considered. It resembles NOTHING of its' former self. There is so much religion in the mix in reaction to ... what? Certainly not religious freedom in the media.
