More Real America™ crap. Guess what? We're all fakers...
One of those two nations clings to the promises and covenants of the past, the Bible, the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution, as the guiding principles. The other believes in and lives with no immutable standards.

Covenants of the past hmmm? slavery? segregation? women voting?

I saw this article in GD posted by BornBlue. She had some good quotes to respond to it

1. Well it's what we teach our children every school morning isn't it
when we require them to recite the modified pledge of allegiance with the phrase "under god" inserted? I mean it equates all the other un-American ideas and positions like tyranny, disunion, anti-liberty with not believing in gods.

3. Oh c'mon. That doesn't mean anything. There are more important issues to deal with.
and everyone knows that people can only care about one issue at a time. Now just get back under the bus with the GLBT crowd.

8. Only some states require it
Our state says the kids have to be offered the opportunity to do the pledge or hear the national anthem. My kids sit it out and we've been toe to toe with a few teachers that seem to think the kids have to participate. The government relies on kids to be forced to by peer and teacher pressure but once kids start to fight it the thing will unravel. We just need to empower our kids to stand up for themselves.

2. But the Bible and the Constitution directly contradict each other.
And connecting "irreligious" with "unpatriotic" really drives me crazier than I already am.

When I'm arguing this on other boards, I like to drop a few facts about my background.

At least one of my ancestors fought in the Revolutionary War. He was awarded a land grant in Georgia for his service.

I had ancestors on both sides in the Civil War. (Not unusual for my corner of South Carolina. It was partly settled by German immigrants who hated slavery.)

As far as I know, every able-bodied male of age in my family served during WWII.

I'm a veteran of America's Secular-Jesuits-In-Uniform, the U.S. Marine Corps.

And some Bible-thumper wants to call me unpatriotic because I'm an atheist? Fightin' words!

5. I love pulling the U.S. Marine Corps trump card!
"When did you say you served your country, Rev. Blowhard?"
