Why does everybody hate me? (Great article on pit bulls)
Just wanted to post this in a handy place for quick reference when it comes up in other forums again. This aticle clearly explains why a pit bull ban is not the answer.

Why does everybody hate me? by Gina Spadafori

Sometimes I think having no pit bulls wouldn't be that bad a thing, but not for the reasons you might imagine.
If pit bulls weren't around, they couldn't be beaten. Starved. Left chained outside with little protection from the elements. Subjected to ear croppings with scissors and no pain relief. Made to bear puppies with next to no food. And finally, if pit bulls weren't around, they couldn't be tossed dead (or nearly so) into a vacant lot when they come up on the losing side of a dogfight.

For every headline-grabbing attack by a pit bull, there are countless cruelties inflicted on these dogs by the criminal element that's attracted to them. As a person recently noted on a dog-related Web log: "It's amazing how many other kinds of dogs in the best homes bite. It's amazing how many pit bulls in the worst homes don't."

But those who do ... Oh, what fear and anger they cause. It's no surprise, given the horror of recent attacks, that the call to eliminate pit bulls has never been louder. But that call remains the wrong one: Breed-specific legislation is not the answer to the problem of dangerous dogs.

It doesn't help much to argue that the odds of an attack by a pit bull are so low as to be insignificant compared to life's other risks, not in the face of saturation media coverage of every such attack. It doesn't help much to argue that a well-bred and properly raised pit bull can be a better companion than many other popular breeds, based on temperament-testing statistics that show these dogs to be stable and calm. It doesn't help much to argue that many of the pit bulls who are being seized and killed in places like Denver are family pets who have never shown a reason for concern -- and never will.

So let's try this: If you want to be protected against a dog attack, banning the pit bull isn't going to accomplish that goal. That's because every large breed or mix you can think of, and many small ones you can't imagine, have been involved in attacks on humans.

You cannot predict the likelihood of an attack by the type of dog, but you can see clear trends based on other criteria.

Poorly bred, unsocialized, unneutered and untrained dogs are most often involved in attacks. If you want to prevent those attacks, you need to address those root causes. All dogs, not just pit bulls, need to be the focus of legislative, societal and educational efforts geared toward removing the contributing factors behind most every dog attack...

1. Good article. You should also post this in the "Pets" group.
Breed banning is an insane, knee jerk reaction to a problem that is way overblown.

I have had both positive and negative experiences with pit bulls.

But the only dog that ever actually bit me was a little terrier mix.

2. I've never known anyone who was bitten by a Pit, but I know
several who were bitten by Jack Russels. My neighbor had the sweetest PB - her name was Sadie and when I would come home from work, she would run over to see me and jump on me an lick me to death. She was a sweet girl and the thought of anyone taking her away and euthanizing her just makes me insane!

Yeah, I'll post it in the Pets group but first I have to go walk my babies :-) .

4. This is so crazy! People are wanting to ban Pit Bulls
and we have guns that kill way more people every day. Where is the outrage there? I'm not going to get into a gun control debate, but we need to put this into perspective - there are responsible gun owners and ones who aren't - are they going to ban all guns because of the bad gun owners? No, they aren't. Not in this country. Yet, they'll come into someone's house and take their pet???!!! This is pure insanity.

I let one of my rescues back in from running around outside. We're treating a skin issue on her right now, so she LOVES to be scratched all over.

This particular girl is probably around 2, and she's been here for several months. When I found her (okay, she hadn't EXACTLY been "lost" yet, but who's keeping score) she was tied to her doghouse. She was on a 3 foot rope and never had water nor food (I know the folks that owned the business next door that kept their eyes on her...and called me). She was "protection" and a source of income from puppy sales. Her skin was horrid, and she was covered in ticks. Animal Control, of course, begged off on her as they didn't see "obvious" abuse. Indeed.

I don't know exactly how her rope was severed, nor how she made her way under that heavy chain link fence and into the back of my car, but by gosh, she did. Unsocialized, untrained, unkempt...all the lead-ins for a "bad pit bull" story. Bad breed, bad breed!

I just zrrrbrrted her on her belly. She loves it. She also likes to climb on my lap in a recliner, flip over on her back, so I can rub her tum-tums. My point? The whole "hardwired for meanness" is total bs. You can bring some of them back. Not all of them. I won't take in fighters, but that's only because I don't have that expertise. I've got a former bait dog, though...he's also a pit, and a big mush sweetheart.

9. You are too much.....
"I just zrrrbrrted her on her belly"
That is so damn cute. :loveya: (An to be honest, it took me a sec to realize what you were talking about!)

She sounds like a real sweetheart. I am glad she managed to "find her way" into your backseat. ;)

Give her a big kiss for me. And a zrrrbrrt on her "tum tums". :P

Too cute :D

10. Heh.
Yeah, my kitty loves that. I don't know if he loves it as much as me, but...:)

I realized with everyone posting pictures of their pets that I haven't taken a picture of him ever, in ten years. I'm such a slacker. I need to do it though because he's getting old and gray. Won't be around forever. :(

12. Now if I can just find a camera.
I've got a Polaroid somewhere. Boy, that'll suck. :P

I guess I'll just have to borrow the digital camera somebody got for Christmas. :)

14. I smell the start of another "post a pic of your pet" thread.
Something I need to do. You can all see just how very lucky I am to share my home with so many wonderful animals.

K, I'm bragging on my animals now. I'll stop.

15. Thanks for a great article.

We have a pit and my daughters have three pits between the two of them, and they are incredibly sweet dogs. The most aggressive behavior my girl has been guilty of is not respecting my space on the bed since I bought a new mattress several weeks ago; suddenly she's decided she wants to sleep right smack in the middle of the bed. Every night we have a conversation on "who's the alpha."

edited to clarify: I probably should spell this out better since people are so paranoid about pit bulls. Her "aggressiveness" is limited to giving me a dirty look and groaning loudly when I tell her to move over. She's a drama queen.
