OMG - they were movies, not life & death - this was life and death
Damn, how many threads are needed to make sure each and every one of us knows which movie each and every one of us thought should have won a trophy?

From an earlier thread:

I'm not hurt and I don't see a conspiracy. But there is a part of me who wanted BBM to win as a great big Fuck U to the Pharisees who preach hate against gays to enrich their own coffers. I know that it has already done that just by the box office, the other awards and numbers of people willing to go see it - maybe I was hoping for such a sweeping win to call it a 'mandate'

I haven't seen Crash, so I don't know if I thought it was better or not, I certainly don't harbor any ill will since it won - now I'm going to see it so I can find out for myself.

There's also a part of me that wanted the widest possible winning to equal more acceptance. Whether it's logging in to read the OP with "gays" in quotes and questioning if the party is even ready for 'us' or this sad, sad post about today in America:

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=221&topic_id=29424&mesg_id=29424

In church today I heard about a 14 year old kid who killed himself
because he couldn't face telling his parents he was gay....

and remembering just how far we have to go yet, regardless of the simple fact of a movie like BBM even getting as a good a reception as it got.

In all reality, if one questioning teen saw this movie or thier parents did and it led to a discussion rather than a suicide - I wouldn't care if it bombed at the box office and never been nominated for a single award.

Children are killing themselves due to the influence or indifference of those who attack others with hate. Gay kids, Iraqi's who aren't fighting our troops, Katrina victims. That's the important part, the awards show was meant to be entertainment, not magic pills to fix everything wrong in the world.

1. excellent point, tragedy for sure, and we are lucky movies like
Brokeback could be produced. I sense a huge backlash from fundie USA coming against our gay friends ...I feel fear.

9. Can you tell me what in post 1 or the OP
would lead you to think either author thinks racism is dead?

2. Unfortunately....suicide among youth that feel they are gay...
is high.....the media does not carry these statistics......They definitely won't point out these deaths should be placed on the shoulders of the parents who have turned their backs on their children who are trying to figure out who they are....without family support...it's either suicide or getting kicked out of these fundie homes.....and living on the streets....

6. Things could be better. I fear that things will get much worse.
These fundies would love to outlaw gays or make life much harder for us. And gays would not be their only target. A while back some Democratic radio shows talked about how Pat Robertson would like to see El Salvador-type death squads in the U.S.

Think it´s impossible? Today the government is breaking the constitution by not allowing fair trials and by wire tapping phones.
