What's with the clear cutting?
I was very upset to see a report on CNN that Canada is clear cutting. Why? 96% of US old growth is gone. Gone Forever. We have forests that are little more than tree farms. We actually have people who accept that as valid management of forests. Then dupe people into thinking it's environmentalists causing the wildfires. Why are you doing this? I really don't understand.

1. it makes sense
thin it out or the whole damn thing will burn. Better to lose 10% to clear cutting to save the 90% that would be gone in a fire if we left it alone.

3. You must be joking
Healthy forests don't burn like that. Most wildfires, even in the screwed up US forests, don't burn like that. Nuke zones are only about 10% of any wildfire. They're caused from replanting clear cuts with too many trees, particularly too many of the same kind of trees.

4. Catastrophic fires result from over-suppression of previous fires too . nt

2. There are some legitimate uses for clearcutting
SOME
not all of the ones the timber industry uses.

6. I think it has to do with this----
Some one has a right to make a profit and you can have a wood table for your back yard. I may be wrong. Red wood tables are the best by the way.

7. I didn't see the CNN report as I am boycotting them but...
this could have been the clear cutting needed to try and curb the pine beetle infestation that is spreading, I posit this because I have been reading articles on this issue and the need to halt the infestation.

8. No
It's just Canada's logging practices. If it had been pine beetle, the forestation guy would have said so. Pine beetle has gotten so bad because replanted forests aren't as healthy and because they usually plant way to many pine and don't mix in other trees. It becomes a breeding ground for pine beetle. Then they cut the trees and the pine beetle spreads on the logging trucks. We've got to change the way we log and clear cutting has proven to be disastrous.

10. I totally agree we need to change the way we log...
and clear cutting is disastrous in the short and long term. I do not trust CNN to report anything truthfully so I wonder who the forestry guy was and how CNN happened upon him?

11. It was on Next
Yesterday. Not your typical CNN crap. They had on a forestry industry guy and an environmentalist. It was about clear cutting the Boreal Forest, one of the last contiguous virgin forests in the world. Logging. Just like we did in the US over the last 100 years. He used the same tired excuse I've heard before, the pine cones open and the seeds naturally replant. But they don't because the clear cuts are open to the sun and rain and a different growth pattern emerges. It's not the same as when a fire goes through because fires usually don't burn everything. Even burned trees that haven't fallen provide a certain amount of shade and nutrient.

12. Thanks for the info on the program!
We need to remove the current government in BC that, although named Liberal, is Conservative and into privatizing, corporate giveaways.

14. Is this the Northern boreal forest in Yukon & Northwest Territories?
Forest practices regulations differ depending on the province/territory. Sorry I missed the program. I would have been interested.
