Domestic violence shield could be lost

A proposal to ban same-sex marriage in Wisconsin's constitution could have far-reaching consequences for unmarried straight couples as well, including stripping them of domestic violence protections, opponents of the measure warned.
"It has the power to negate over 20 years of protections for victims of domestic violence," said Janie Oveho, social action coordinator for the Wisconsin Coalition Against Domestic Violence.
On Tuesday more than 300 people flocked to the State Capitol to testify on the proposed constitutional amendment, which also would likely bar civil unions and domestic partnership benefits.
In written testimony submitted to the Assembly and Senate Judiciary Committees, the coalition said the proposed amendment could have broad implications for victims of sexual assault and domestic violence.
