Davidson County Election Administrator Michael McDonald was fired this morning by the county's election commission, ending 11 years as Nashville's elections officer.
McDonald surprised everyone at a special commission meeting this morning when he said he would not resign and instead threw his fate to the commission.

The commission had been pressuring him in recent days to step down after the latest rounds of problems at the office, involving a missed deadline for absentee ballots to be send overseas.

The interim administrator will be Ray Barrett, the office's warehouse and election machine manager. Barrett, who has been with the commission for about two decades, will likely shepherd the office through the Nov. 2 election, while the commission searches for a permanent replacement, Nixon said.
