Teen Who Fought Off Kidnapper With a Hammer Talks to News 11

TOLEDO -- Earlier this month, a 14-year-old Toledo girl said she was walking on Moorish Street in north Toledo when a man kidnapped her. She said he pulled up in a black car, whistled at her, and she started walking faster -- but he got out of his car and pulled out a gun.

"I just stopped because I didn't want to die," she told News 11.

She said she had been taught that trick about looking for a weapon when in a scary situation like that. I forget where she said she learned it -- some sort of class or lesson, I think.

But there's another lesson that needs to be taught: even if someone has a gun, do not get in a vehicle with him. I've seen some statistics on this, and if you do get in a vehicle, you aren't too likely to live. But if you take off running, you have a fairly good chance of not being shot. And if you're shot, you have good chance of it not being fatal.

6. A bit of advice.

First, bravo, hit him once for me.

On the other hand she really defied the odds. Generally, once a victim gets in a vehicle, the odds of survival take a nosedive. If someone tells you to get in a motor vehicle at gunpoint, RUN and shout! 1. He won't shoot because of the noise. This is a crime of preparation. He won't blow it by attracting attention. 2. If he shoots, he will probably miss. Hitting a moving target with a handgun is a lot harder than it looks.
