Clinton mailing attacks Obama on guns

Hillary Clinton has re-opened her sharp attack on Barack Obama's position on guns, with a mailer in Indiana that seeks to raise questions about him with both supporters and opponents of gun rights.

The mailing -- perhaps the sharpest-edged of Clinton's five negative mail pieces in Indiana -- casts him as a typical politician, saying different things to different audiences. It also revives his damaging comments in San Francisco that small town people cling to guns.

Then, making the harsh case more broadly, the mailer asks: "What does Barack Obama really believe?"

The piece is particularly striking coming from Clinton, who has been seen for most of her career as a firm advocate of gun control, but more recently has emerged -- without dramatically shifting her stance on specific issues -- as a defender of the Second Amendment who fondly recalled being taught to shoot by her grandfather in Scranton.

Mrs. Clinton Backs Gun-Control Initiatives NY TIMES
Hillary Rodham Clinton endorsed a series of stringent gun-control measures yesterday, calling for the licensing of all new gun owners and the registration of new guns.

'Many will argue that we don't need sensible gun control, and that these measures undermine the rights of gun owners. And of course, we all know the slogan that guns don't kill, only people do. We have to do more to stand up to those who refuse to believe the reality that guns do kill, and that common-sense gun measures can make a difference.''

* Seven days after the 1999 Columbine school massacre in which 12 students and a teacher were murdered, Bill and Hillary Clinton held a press conference on gun control legislation. Bill Clinton stated:

"And we smile about that, but there are some people who would be on this platform today who lost their seats in 1994 because they voted for the Brady Bill and they voted for the assault weapons ban, and they did it in areas where people could be frightened."
"Do we know for absolutely certain that if we had every reasonable law and the ones I'm going to propose here that none of these school violence things would have happened? No. But we do know one thing for certain; we know there would have been fewer of them, and there would have been fewer kids killed in the last several years in America. We know that for certain. We know that." (Applause) (25)

* In April of 1999, Bill and Hillary Clinton held a press conference on gun control legislation. Hillary Clinton stated:

"And since the crime bill was enacted, 19 of the deadliest assault weapons are harder to find on our streets. We will never know how many tragedies we've avoided because of these efforts." (25)

''Buck the gun lobby'' Hillary

Hillary Clinton Appeals For Gun Control Lobbying

Stepping up the Clinton Administration's campaign against gun violence, Hillary Rodham Clinton used an emotional White House ceremony today to call on Americans to press Congress to ''buck the gun lobby'' and pass several gun control measures.

5. It was, what, 2 weeks ago that she promised to outlaw the most popular target rifles in America?
As a gun owner, I personally think Obama would be better on guns than Clinton. While in Illinois, he got wrapped up in Daleyesque views on guns, but I think he is smart enough to drop it and leave the issue to the states. Hillary, on the other hand, has promised to make outlawing the most popular guns in America a "top legislative priority," and she is very closely aligned with corporatist gun-control proponents at the DLC, IMO.

16. I'm pretty pro-gun control, so I'm actually closer to HRC's position than the candidate I'm
supporting.

I think that Senator Obama will pretty much leave the gun issue alone all the way around - it's a real loser about any way you look at it for politicians running on the national level. He'll be more likely to leave it to municipalities and states, etc.

Besides which, I have a feeling the USSC is about to remove the question from the legislative arena with Heller.

17. This is typical of the bullshit that makes me despise Sen. Clinton.
How are her policy positions on guns materially different than Obama's? How is her rhetoric?

Gun groups hate her: http://www.votesmart.org/issue_rating_category.php?can_id=55463&type=category&category=37

Both candidates pay lip service to the 2nd amendment, but advocate an agenda of gun control.

Clinton attacks Obama for treating the subject in the exact same fashion she does. That's pure bullshit, and the last thing this country needs is more bullshit.

20. I thought Hillary was running on Bill's administrated achievements?
The whole issue is hogwash anyway because it would take at least a hundred years just to root them away from the people that already have them(if anybody was stupid enough to try).

This a non-issue as lapel pins made in China

Gun control decoys on the firing range
By James Bovard

The Clinton administration is once again hailing the Brady Handgun Violence Prevention Act of 1993 as the key to national salvation. However, once again, the administration's claims are as bogus as a three dollar bill.

The Justice Department announced on June 21 that presale handgun background checks mandated by the Brady law and by state laws resulted in 69,000 people being denied permission to purchase guns in 1997.

But the Justice Department's estimates did not even maintain credibility for a week. The Indianapolis Star and News reported on June 24 that the Justice Department exaggerated by 1,300 percent the number of gun buyers turned down in Indiana because of the Brady Act. White House spokeswoman Nanda Chitre conceded the same day that President Clinton had exaggerated the number of people stopped from buying guns by the Brady Act and that White House counsel Rahm Emanuel had greatly exaggerated the number of newly bought guns used in homicides.

This is not the first time Clinton administration numbers on the Brady Act have gone down in disgrace. A 1996 General Accounting Office report found that the data used to estimate nationwide denials under the Brady act are extremely unreliable. For instance, arrests are sometimes counted the same as convictions - and the fact that a person was once arrested (though later found innocent) could be used to deny their request to buy a firearm. GAO found almost half of all rejections under the Brady Act were due to paperwork problems or traffic violations, not to criminal records. (GAO did not even examine the percentage of denials that were valid. Though the federal data is still very shaky, no member of Congress has requested that GAO update its study on Brady Act rejection numbers.
