GD:Pers - Listen up, literally! What music made you smile today?

If you're like me, this primary has consumed every waking ( and sometimes, sleeping) minute for the last four months. I know that for a fact because this place is beyond intense. When Reverend Wright brought up the differences in music between races in his lecture, Monday, It got me thinking. I thought, if I can get GD:Pers to relax for just five minutes a day, it might be less of a cauldron. So take a deep breath and post what piece of music made you happy, today? The purpose here is not to criticize musical preferences but, simply, to see if we can put aside our differences and bond for a short time. I know this: we'll need to come together after this thing is settled, no matter who wins it. It's our only chance of winning this deal. You may say, take this to the DU lounge, but to be honest GD:P is the only site that I've posted at. Hey, this post may go over like a lead balloon ( that's what Pete Townsend said to Jimmy Page about Zeppelins chances-hence,their name) but I might burn a thread every day if I get a smile. By the way, it was The Beatles Revolver that did it for me, today.

35. A friend of mine and I were talking about them the other day.

They were great - but they had a rep in the industry of 'hawking' demos and covering them and having hits.

A friend's brother's band was signed to Columbia at the time 3DN was big, and they were slated to cover 'Easy To Be Hard' (from 'Hair') and release it as a lead single before their album - 3DN beat them to the punch by three weeks and had a smash with it.

I think most of it was jealousy that they covered other people's tunes better than most other bands around at the time.

My little boy! SO proud, I am! They called him "captivating" and "a particular stand-out"!

"Music Connection" is a pretty cool and well-regarded magazine. I got comments on it from people I haven't heard from for ages - who'd never responded to anything about him before!

That I don't listen to popular music of any sort. Especially coming out of the mouth of a 26 year old woman, it seems to be psychically jarring to just about everyone.

Oh, sure, once upon a time I listened to Nirvana, Sublime, the Beastie Boys, Rage Against the Machine, and other assorted 90s bands, but I've since decided that caring about modern music is a waste of time. On the rare occasions that I listen to the radio (usually in the car), I listen to NPR or the local wingnuts on the radio (know thy enemy, I always say). I guess my predilection for classical art music is quite unusual, and a bit off-putting to most of my peers.

I should have gone to bed an hour ago, but I'll just say one thing about Revolver, other than that it's a fantastic album. McCartney said somewhere that the first time he listened to a final pressing, he was convinced the entire album was out of tune, and he had to be reassured by many people that that wasn't the case. He hadn't dropped acid yet at that point, unlike Harrison and Lennon, but maybe a steady diet of uppers and pot clouded his judgment. Maybe that explains his second marriage, too, come to think of it. And "Silly Love Songs".

Back in my varsity days, I was at a strip club, quite drunk, and a very young, pretty woman disrobed to "Tupelo Honey". It brought me to tears for her sake, for mine, and for God knows what else.

And I don't disagree about Ellington, but he just barely edges out Gershwin and Samuel Barber for me. If you ever want to annoy the neighbors, try Barber's Symphony in One Movement. Tape your windows and crank that mother up. It slays.

different way than the rest of the world did. A good deal of us thought it struck the right chord, struck the nerves that needed striking. Pete Townshend said that some of McCartney's compositions were "gauche," a word you didn't run across very often in the early editions of THE SOHO NEWS or ROLLING STONE.

"Silly Love Songs" is kind of like one of those marshmallow bunnies grown-ups put in little kids' Easter baskets and which the little kids in turn ignore summarily to rip thru the fake green grass to get to the chocolate. My theory is his wife was ill and wrote the song and he put his brand on it to give it heft. It didn't work. There are high schoolers who can out-write that tune, and it may be that I need to titrate my dose of lysergic acid to understand how the same person who wrote that song also wrote "Eleanor Rigby."

Have to agree on Barber -- (I rate "Adagio for Strings" pretty high) -- he gets top honors in composition in most circles but Gershwin & Duke know where my psyche hangs out, plus, they're often up after hours. Although I've not been to that bar where that woman picked "Tupelo Honey" for a strip soundtrack. Has to be a first, that one. And an impressive one at that.

But then I was always at the wrong bar. JeffR, good god, but I'm thinking you should be doing some book-writing if you aren't already. I'd buy a copy, to be sure.

I'll use that description because one cocktail waitress I know in Las Vegas never lets me hear the end of it. "See that guy?" she'll say to a friend during work, "He's not a song person." Then they chuckle like hell. I said it one time while semi-drunk at the nearby bar a few years ago, and now I can't shake it, at least in that casino.

Never found music the least bit interesting or valuable. I'm probably the only kid who preferred talk radio to music beginning at about age 7 and throughout school. My next album will be my first. I have heard of the Beatles.
