I know I'll be attacked but
Obama is half white. his mom is white and so are his gramma and grampa on her side.
I have that famous 1 drop that makes me black in the south, so I think I can post on this.
Are we not supposed to notice it?

17. Yes, and Obama himself....
decided a long time ago, that he felt more comfortable on the black side, as opposed to the white. It's in his book, 'Dreams From My Father'.

What are you trying to tell us here? Most people already know he has a white mother and a black father. Is there something besides that that you're trying to add? Just curious.

16. Obama didn't make the rules. White folks decided a long time ago that one drop made
Edited on Wed Jan-30-08 12:11 AM by EffieBlack
him black. And he has considerably more than one drop. In fact, he's half-African - which probably makes him genetically "blacker" than most African-Americans descended from slaves.

Bottom line - Obama is, by all rules of society (at least the rules that applied until Obama came along) black, regardless of the fact that his mother was white. And he's not just black because of the "one drop" rule - he is clearly black in appearance. I'm sure that everytime he has faced discrimination as a black man in America, the people doing the discriminating weren't the least bit concerned about his mother's bloodline.

I can't help but be amused by the urgency with which some white folk are now claiming that Obama isn't REALLY black - he's BI-RACIAL . . . as if somehow that changes who he is and how he should identify himself - and, I suspect, gives whites a greater connection to him than they normally feel toward the average black person.

I remember a few months back when a story circulated that Obama had slaveowners in his family on his mother's side. And folks got all squiggly and worried that this might cause him a problem in the black community. I had to laugh at this since it showed how little some people know about American history in general and black folk, in particular. There are hardly ANY black people in America who do not have white blood and who don't have slaveowners in their family tree. The reason that most of us do not look purely African is that one or more of our great-great-great grandmothers was raped and impregnated by her white master. Hell, far from alienating Obama from the black community, this fact simply meant that he had one more thing in common with most other black people.

And I don't hear Obama walking around calling himself "bi-racial." (And thank God, he hasn't fallen prey to the Tiger Woods "Cablanasian" gobbledeegook). He considers himself black. Period. That should be good enough for everyone.

24. The bi-racial people I know are proud to be known as such...
...and so is Obama, who corrected an MTV interviewer when the interviewer called him black. Obama immediately told him he's bi-racial.

He's as white as he is black and as black as he is white. That's just a fact and if someone wants to make something negatively racial out of that, that person has a real bad problem.

32. Yup, The "one drop rule" was started by racists in this country to keep the white race "pure"
and this racist rule is unique to the United States of course.

30. You said you would get attacked.
And you did.

Don't you know that you are not supposed to mention race AT ALL, unless you are Obama or one of his surrogates? Then you can yell about racism the minute someone says one wrong word or puts one foot wrong.

I don't think there was anything wrong with your question.

Maybe what the people in this thread are saying is that his white ancestors and relatives are not the issue. Most of our society only sees the black side. That is the side he has to explain. I believe he has discussed his white relatives, especially his mother.

He is in a unique position, one that I cannot begin to understand. He doesn't fit in either place, and his upbringing is not very typical.
