1. Bookmarked, kicked and recommended.
I like to think I'm pretty well-versed on the candidates' healthcare plans, but a little light reading on the subject never hurt anyone. Kudos for talking issues!

Kaiser Family Foundation is a pretty good resource. This is a very important issue, I don't want to suffer any "buyer's remorse" after the election.

4. Change doesn't come in tidal waves.
I think all three of the candidates' plans represent a good step in the right direction.

7. Yeah, you're probably right.
I just worry that these mandates will become another form of regressive taxation and corporate welfare.

5. With Edwards plan
its the only one that forces competition between government plans and private health insurance plans.

Edwards will also begin his term in office by getting rid of all free health insurance for members of Congress to light a fire under them for results.

8. I like that last bit!

Can you imagine what all those 60+ year olds in the congressional leadership would have to pay for private health insurance? I'm sure most of them have no idea of what it's like out there.

10. How can he get rid of congresscritters health insurance, not that I wouldn't like too see that.
That should have been done long ago. They don't deserve what they deny us.

15. I think he would take it out of the budget
that he submits to Congress. Not sure of the mechanism he has planned, but will find it.

9. I would like to know how our candidates can honestly say this is not a new
way to separate people from their money and have some of that money line the pockets of a for profit system?

If they are willing to mandate 'insurance' for everyone, why not just cut the insurance companies out of it, unburden business from providing insurance, raise taxes to an amount LESS than what we now pay for for-profit insurance, and give us what they ALL know is the best system - single payer?

Why the Kabouki dance? Fear of Republicans?

12. Political reality? We have 3 branches of government and unfortunately
Edited on Tue Jan-29-08 05:23 PM by Bread and Circus
only 2 dominant parties. I think we all agree something has to be done and I as a physician would like single payer care. However, what is realistically achievable?

This could be a case of the perfect is the enemy of the good.

13. I can only speak for Edwards
His plan uses the "free market" and competition, plus government subsidies, to force private insurance to compete with public.

No one can make the false claims of government monopoly, socialized medicine, etc. Edwards gives gives the "market" a chance to work with the inevitable result being government insurance (Medicare) will be chosen by more people because its inherently lower cost (no profit motive, no executive salaries, no bloat). Its also more portable and convenient to use.

18. Because the dumbasses that still support Republicans
don't want "socialized medicine." They don't have a f'ing idea what that means, but they don't want it. Sometimes I think that means they are afraid they might have to sit next to a poor person in a doc's office, or something.

More of them need to see what a serious illness does to families.

While I too believe a properly managed "single payer" system would be best, the dumbasses won't let it happen overnight.

11. I believe I am the one who initially directed you to those links and I have a question...
In Obama's plan the Kaiser states his plan has a provision to "Prohibit insurers from denying coverage based on pre-existing conditions". On the same page I cannot find a comparable provision in Edwards plan. This is a fundamental key issue that would need to be addressed if all private and governmental plans were to be put on the same competitive ground.

It's very easy for one company to be cheaper than an other just by being selective in who it accepts. To force them to take all comers will truly force them compete with the same footing.

Can you please direct me to where I am missing that in Edwards plan.

I'm sure it's there, but where?

14. Here it is
Page 3

http://www.johnedwards.com/about/issues/health-care-overview.pdf

Require Fair Terms for Health Insurance: Edwards will require insurers to keep plans open to
everyone and charge fair premiums, regardless of preexisting conditions, medical history, age, job,
and other characteristics. No longer will insurance companies be able to game the system to cover
only healthy people. Several states – including New Jersey, New York, and Washington – have led
the way on similar community rating and guaranteed issue reforms. In addition, new national
standards will ensure that all health insurance policies offer preventive and chronic care with
minimal cost-sharing.

19. You raise a good point
How will pre-existing conditions be treated. As it is now, no underwriter will accept many pre-existing conditions. And, if they do, your going to be paying out more then you can afford over $1,000/month in my experience.

17. Purely my own self interest
I don't want everyone calling my non-profit asking for financial help after another "failure to launch" of health care reform.

I'm holding all of you accountable to save your own arses. :P Of course, contract health care reform lobbying services will be available at "reasonable" cost.
