Poll question: Do You Live In A State Where No Candidates Ever Visit You?
I'm in New York and we never get any real candidate campaigning here. Oh, we'll get fundraisers and stuff, because NYC and the Hamptons is where the money is - but in terms of 'come out and hear a speech' or something - nada.

And I don't know if it's going to change this year. I think everyone assumes Hillary has the NY vote locked up. I'm pretty sure the GOP field will steer clear of here if it looks like McCain has it wrapped up, although Romney might give it a shot here, possibly.

It's frustrating. You see Iowa and New Hampshire and Nevada and South Carolina and Florida and Ohio and Pennsylvania on the news getting candidates to come out and give speeches and rallies and you live in a state where all they ask of you is money.

Anyone else in the same boat?

1. IL. Obama occasionally says hi, but very rarely. Hillary stopped by a few times early on,

until she realized that we knew she wasn't really an Illinoisan any more. I don't feel bad, though, you can't pick up a rock in Chicago without discovering a nest of politicians, so I think we're good.

2. I saw an Obama ad for the 1st time here in Illinois tonight
In the GE I think it's assumed we'll select a Democrat. But Hillary and Obama both have connections here, so I'm surprised we haven't seen more ads.

3. WE're reliably blue. They come for the money, more than the
campaign stops.

5. The best we got in the last election was 15 minutes on the tarmac with Darth Cheney
And that was at an airport an hour away! I'm sure they all visited Denver but not the other side of the mountains.

6. Well.....the candidates all courted me...
Edited on Sat Jan-26-08 12:30 AM by TwoSparkles
...for a long time.

The weeks of endless phone calls. The promises. The invites to big events.

It was all so fast and furious, until finally---the big night where I pledged my
undying support in the Iowa caucus.

I thought it was the beginning. But really, it was just one big---political one night stand.

I returned home from the caucus that night, waiting for word. I found out--from a news report--that
they had all left the state. I didn't even get an "I'll call ya later".

I woke up the next morning after the caucus--alone with my bumper stickers and precinct captain cap.

I found out the hard way that after you give it up to them in the caucus--the phone calls
and invitations to the rallies suddenly end.

I felt so used.

7. I'm admittedly jealous
When I see the clips of the candidates in diners and factories and community centers with small groups of people, I'm very jealous. I live in a horrifically red state and until this year, our primary was in June. I've never seen a candidate in person in my life.

8. They come to us for money in CA-
There's been a couple of fundraisers. We may get a couple of visits before Super Tuesday, but that's about it. For me, to see my candidate, I've had to go to two different states.

11. They come to Beverly Hills for the $$. They come to
places like East or South LA for school or church photo ops. Other than that, they're visible only on tv ads.

9. Not too many here in Ct.
Edited on Sat Jan-26-08 12:34 AM by discerning christian
(unless you count Bill Clinton stumping for Joe Lieberman!!!) Now......way back when.... Ct. was a State up for grabs...we had a certain Pres. Candidate come through here on numerous occasions. His name was John F. Kennedy.....guess that worked out pretty well for him, huh?? Me thinks that to take us for granted too much, is to do so at ones peril!! ( I just really, really, want to see OBAMA, up close and personal!!) Hey if it was good enough for JFK,....GOBAMA!!!

It would seem strange to us were they not. You're not getting a lot of recorded phone messages though so be thankful for that.

12.  Edwards
In '04 I saw John Edwards up in the Iron Range, a big DFL rally in Hibbing Auditorium, Obestar and Mondale were there too. Same year I met Elizabeth Edwards at a meet up in suburban VFW a few miles from my house. I've been lucky. Best of all was seeing Paul Wellstone on the same stage with the Dalai Lama when he came to the U of Minn.

...come to think of it, we didn't see much of HIM, either.

Never mind.

I really feel that my state is on the bottom of the Democratic Party's list. We're a state that could flip into the Democratic Column in November, and we get virtually zero attention. I can see us swinging for Obama in November so long as Warner, Kaine and Wilder endorse him (and I think Kaine has already endorsed him). We won't be flipping for Hillary, I am certain for that - lots of Hillary hate where I live. It is part of the reason I am supporting Obama, because I want to see my state flip blue in a General Election.

I remember the last time my local area became important to a President... it was under Bill Clinton's Administration. I forget how young I was, but I was still in school, and they had us get out of class early that day. We all got on buses to ride down to the local military base and were instructed to wave flags. Bill was coming to look at the base or some such, and there was a debate over whether or not to close it down. He decided to shut it down - and it's now used for the National Guard - and as a result the Clinton's are pretty much universally hated here. They drove away so many jobs and put a knife in our local economy.

The main employer around here now is Wal-Mart, which has in turn killed most local businesses.

15. I live 60 miles north of the NY city, Hillary comes around
quite often, but she is there as Senator. I don't think any presidential candidate has been around these parts since FDR & RFK to campaign.

:boring:

Obama was here in...November? For a rally with Deval Patrick. Like that mattered, considering the timing...

I think Clinton was here too, but only for some big $$ fundraiser :eyes:

It's too solidly red to be worth campaigning in.

20. Yeah, but that could change.
The grand jury that indicted Supreme Court Justice Medina and his wife had a press confererence.

They did so because the Harris Co. D.A., Chuck Rosenthal, filed a Motion to Quash Indictments on insufficient evidence. A local state district judge (also Repuke like all Harris County judges) granted the motion to quash. And Rosenthal is under a Federal cloud of tampering with evidence, since he allegedly destroyed emails between his administrative assistant/girlfriend and himself, and his computer contained porn and racist jokes. He's a repuke.

None of the candidates have come to Houston that I know of and we're only the fourth largest city in the country, after NYC, LA and Chicago.

This is a big difference from 92, when I saw Bill Clinton come to town three times(once during the state Dem Convention) and Hillary once, and 96 too.

19. Get them too often, probably because we are a hub of sorts...
Live near St. Louis, and most candidates from both parties and Bush has visited this place far too often, Bush, by the way, creates hell on the highways. Fucking motorcade.
