McCaskill has endosed Obama
Edited on Sun Jan-13-08 12:55 PM by Perky
ST. LOUIS, MO – U.S. Senator Claire McCaskill today endorsed Barack Obama for President, saying Obama will unite Americans to make progress on the challenges facing our nation.

"I truly believe that a leader like this comes around once in a generation,” said Senator McCaskill. “Our great country should not miss this opportunity. His intellect and his ability to bring people together are what we desperately need at this moment in history."

“Senator McCaskill is a trailblazer who has worked tirelessly to bring change to Missouri by opening up government and holding special interests accountable,” said Senator Obama. “Claire McCaskill is a problem solver who reaches across the aisle to find common ground , and I’ve worked with her to ensure that our heroes returning home from war have the care they deserve and the support necessary to rebuild their lives. I’m grateful for Senator McCaskill’s endorsement and believe she will provide a significant boost in our efforts to unite Americans to take on the great challenges we face.”

In 2006, Claire McCaskill was the first woman from Missouri elected to the U.S. Senate. McCaskill was a trailblazer in her decades of public service in Missouri, as the first active member of the Missouri Legislature to have a child while holding office, and the first female Jackson County prosecutor. As State Auditor, McCaskill revolutionized the office to make it into a watchdog for Missouri taxpayers.

If you're from Missouri, check out MO.BarackObama.com for information on how you can get involved locally and help Barack win in this crucial February 5th state.

But it is a good endorsement nonetheless.

Michael J Fox's endorsement of Claire McCaskill and limpball's subsequent dissing of Michael led to Claire's narrow win in Missouri.

I voted for Claire. I don't always agree with her, but I do respect her. I started out enthusiastic about Obama 4 years ago(?) when he made his speech but his actions haven't always tallied with his words. To me, that indicates a credibility gap. We currently have the biggest credibility gap I have ever seen sitting in the White House. I doubt Obama could be anywhere as bad but I don't think he is someone I want to see in the White House at this particular point in time. I want someone I feel that I can have a reasonable expectation of doing and following through on things. I'm not going to say who I prefer simply because I don't see that as relevant to this conversation. Spare me the list of what you all say he's done. I've been watching him. I consider your list not entirely factual and pretty much boring. Fact remains, I don't feel confident about Obama and won't be voting for him in the primary and I've gotten tired of people telling me who I should vote for.

27. I've never had that problem
with people telling me whom I should vote for. It's really a personal thing and arrived at much thinking over the years. I was for Dean the last time around and now I'm for Obama but just definetly most lately. Kinda of accidental destination because I was spending so much time defending him from hillary surrogates that I've come to like him for our president.

We'll see what we're gonna see:)

34. I trust the judgment of leading Democrats I admire. I was leaning toward Hillary recently
because I was frustrated with the quality of the questions thrown at Obama during the many debates I watched. They failed to be thought-provoking. Level of difficulty was somewhat low. The first quality I look for in a candidate is ability to think on one's feet; the ability to handle whatever is thrown against the wall and prevent it from sticking, sort of. I just couldn't get a handle on it. But that's not Obama's fault. That's the fault of the question and the questioner.

So I finally did some research on Obama's past and began to think: This man may be the one. The one who can lead us and relight that once bright beacon whose beckoning flame is so rapidly dimming. But can he survive the attempts to destroy him that surely will double, or triple, anything that has gone before with any other presidential candidate in our history? So I took another look at John Edwards too.

Then there was the John Kerry endorsement. I trust John Kerry and admire him more than any other human being on this earth. And, after all, he does know Barack a bit more than I do.

So Barack is the one. But that opinion is mine, and mine alone, along with a tiny bit of input from a man I would trust with my life. And I am so pleased that Claire McCaskill, the lady with the beautiful soul who keeps Missouri's flame from going out, added her endorsement today.

But no thanks. I'll use my own judgment. After all, the people whose judgment you say you trust have taken some very odd positions. They stated that impeachment is off the table. They have continued to fund the war just like the republicans did before them. And anytime someone says this is THE ONE, I start looking for alternatives because the one thing you can be sure of is that this is NOT "the one".

4. Senator McCaskill also said this about Barack Obama and "his ability to give a great speech."
“A lot of people talk about his ability to give a great speech. And there’s no question that he is truly gifted by God with an ability to speak to people in a way that touches them,” Ms. McCaskill said. “To me, that is the whip cream in the cherry. To me, this is a man who has incredible intellectual heft, he’s a very smart guy with a wide soul who is not afraid to figure out a new and different way to tackle problems.”

Senate. I thank the good Lord she had the courage to seek high office once again, and how sweet it was when she won.

I believe her mentor was Tom Eagleton.

Her decision to back Obama was prompted by her own certainty, after much thought, I am sure, that he is the best America has to offer. That, out of our three choices for the nomination, he is the one who is best qualified and most capable to lead our country back from the brink of disaster.

Claire is her own person. An independent thinker. No lockstep for her. I don't always agree with her, but she sure makes us proud here in Missouri.

5. Even though she is my Senator, I will still wait until I see...
...some sign from Obama that he isn't just trying to coast on a wave of emotion. I am against waves of emotion. McCaskill says she truly believes in him, so I will not feel too bad about him being our candidate. But I have not seen anything from Obama himself that makes me think the image he is trying to ride will take him to the White House. I think his image will dissipate in a cloud of vapor. We had better be left with something real when it does.

McCaskill's endorsement makes me feel better, but does not sway my opinion that Hillary has a fundamentally better chance of taking the White House and would make just as good a president. Obama may not feel a need to convince skeptics while he has enough unquestioning idealists in his camp. That is not good. I don't think he will win the primary with that attitude, and I am fairly sure he can't win the election that way.

Weapons proliferation legislation? He's done it.

Ethics reform? Done it.

Open government? Done it.

Constitutional amendment to make health care a right? Sole sponsor in Illinois.

Stand up to shitty Bush economic policies? He personally sprearheaded the IL legislation to circumvent Bush's crappy overhead law.

Putting people over power and money? He did it with every choice in his career.

He answers the questions, you have to read an interview or two, listen to a speech or two, to get them.

28. I like debates, interviews, town halls, and press conferences.
I want to see the candidate lead, take command of a room, show a mastery of subject, show what they are about, show humor and seriousness--in real time. I find it very hard to trust what a candidate says on their web site or what their supporters say when it comes to matters of fact.

McCaskill's endorsement of Obama means a lot. I would be in Obama's corner but for his performance in debates and interviews. Clinton basically takes charge most of the time. Obama sticks to talking points that I already see too much of. Clinton extemporizes and dominates. Obama had a perfectly good, humorous line ("You're likable enough, Hillary"), but he blew it from shyness and caution, IMO. That won't work in the GE.

Also, Obama reflexively said "That's not so" when Hillary pointed out (correctly) that he had a big pharma lobbyist as his NH campaign co-chair. To me, that showed panic, not dishonesty. But it would spin as dishonesty in the GE.

29. The lobbyist was a state lobbyist
Not a big pharma federal lobbyist. That's what he shook his head no at, she distorted the facts.

You say you don't want to listen to supporters, fine, don't. But you will have to go to his web site where text and video of the substantive "command of a room" and events that "show a mastery of subject" are located.

And his likeable line was fine, she laughed and said "thank you".

You really don't have much here.

Edited on Sun Jan-13-08 01:31 PM by realpolitik
yes, I do believe they have a fall back candidate they can support and declare a 'responsible progressive' or some such idiocy.

I think they are still officially betting on the pro-imperialist, openly pro-corporatist candidate because they think that the terror of $100 bbl oil and the fear that America is losing its superpower status despite the Iraq occupation rather than because of it.

But Hillary must not slip up like Iowa again. It would not surprise me to discover that the DLC has embraced bi-partisanism deeply in this effort. Hillary as Dem candidate is the wide stance party's deepest desire.

No, I do not think Obama is a progressive. He may have some left of center ideas, but he has right of center ideas as well. But I think he does a bit of what Bush did with the fundinistas. He refers to the progressive meme, without explication or expansion.

But the more I think about it, the more it makes sense that she would want to distance herself from her in order to make sure that the people running down ticket have coattails.

I talked to someone who advised her that she lost the Governor's race because she was "too much like Hillary Clinton." Others said "too rough around the edges." I think she's doing what she thinks is right.
This is a very good endorsement. She softened her image enough to please some people, and she has made some great strides with taking her Auditor skills to Washington.

Are you refusing to see that what Claire has stated is totally from the heart? Have you followed Claire's career, do you truly understand where she is coming from, or have you listened to her when she speaks in the Senate (that's on CSPAN, in case you don't know).

Do you realize how beautifully Claire exemplifies the values, courage, and spirit of Missourians?

Yes, I think her endorsement does show an effort to bring peace to the state. I fear Hillary, if elected, would drive the Rs and the Ds even farther apart. Obama would do the opposite. Bring us together. Something so desperately needed in America and so needed in Missouri.

Claire did, indeed, make an admirable choice.

from, of all places, the White House! ??????????? !!!!!!!!!!!!

The Bush administration has officially (as of last night and according to whatever cable TV channel I had droning on in the background) said they feel very comfortable handing over their legacy to Hillary Clinton. (picture me with open mouth dropping like a boulder to the floor)

Haven't they, or rather their water-carriers, been saying for years that Hillary is Satan? The devil incarnate? That witch demon from deep in the bowels of Hell?

So Republicans prefer SATAN to Obama????????????

Has Hillary thanked them yet?

43. I think Obama needs a slight reality check
He's praising McCaskill for reaching across the aisle. Yes, I get that's not all he's praising her for. However, reaching across the aisle is one centerpiece of his campaign. Too bad the other side slaps your hand when you do. I understand that there's back room dealing in the Senate. More so than in the Congress. What has it gotten the Democrats? No matter how accommodating they are the Other Side publicly bashes them. Then (see Trent Lott), they go to the media and laugh about it. They laugh about how the Democrats fell for it again. They admit that their message is the one getting out and this exactly the way they want it. Then the media jumps on the Dem bashing bandwagon. This is what the public sees. I hope Obama is prepared. If he thinks Hillary is nasty wait 'til he wins the nomination. He ain't seen nothin' yet.
