18. You may not seize Islamabad, but it may topple Musharef anyway. (nm)

20. And if Obama's actions topple Musharef ...
What is Obama's plan to deal with that? Is he prepared to launch a full invasion to "stabilize" a country with a muslim population of 160,000,000+? Or does he propose that we sit back and watch bin Laden acquire nukes?

You don't take action unless you are prepared to deal with the consequences. That is how Bush ended up in Iraq. You have to think things all the way through.

23. Musharraf might be toppled one way or the other--
we have to be prepared for that no matter WHO is President. That doesn't mean that action against OBL and AQ targets are simply forever off-limits as long as Pakistan is allowing them safe harbor, does it?

24. It means that as long as there is a viable alternative ...
... we stick with it. And when there is no longer that viable alternative ... we find another one. Threatening to send troops across their border isn't helping any, nor would toppling a dictator and replacing him with chaos.

It seems to me that we just made that mistake. We might want to learn from that screwup and not repeat it.

25. btw there is an alternative to getting bin Laden Dead or Alive
We can make him irrelevant. bin Laden doesn't need to swing by his neck for us to win this war.

do so without causing WW3. As long as he's alive, free, and still at the head of a resurgent AQ, he serves as a powerful example that terrorism is an effective tactic against the Western world. The leadership is what we're after, and that's who we cannot get right now. You can kill tons of small fish, but there will always be more. The big fish recruit, organize, and inspire. As long as countries such as Afghanistan and Pakistan harbor them, they are supported rather than marginalized, and will continue to act against us. International pressure definitely needs to be brought to bear, and it has, but we're kind of at a standoff with Pakistan now. No one wants to make a bad situation worse--obviously I don't believe Obama does either. But a President's first duty is to protect the citizens, and so far we can't get the head of the snake that wants to keep striking us.

7. There's a difference between invading a country and going after the AQ leadership.
Edited on Wed Aug-01-07 06:56 PM by Connie_Corleone
Bush had the chance to hit the AQ leadership in 2005 and he didn't do it. So, he won't be invading Pakistan, overthrowing the government and nation building.

Any time your armed forces cross into another country absent an invitation ... that IS an invasion.

Big fat red herring. I know the Democrats won't be looking to lie about casus belli's so that they can consolidate domestic power at home while they spend a Trillion, feeding their financial backers.

12. I will.
It should be crystal clear from today's announcements that we are not going to get the country back by any legal/peaceful methods. I am hoping * or whoever succeeds him launches WW III, since that's the only thing that's going to get us out of this mess.

He would invade. I know you are a newbie. However, you need to get a dictionary to learn what the difference is between pressure and invade.
