He is Arizona's other senator. The one who is NOT John McCain — as Jon Kyl is often reminded.
When the two Republican senators are in public together, supporters line up to shake Kyl's hand, but they want McCain's autograph.
Kyl generally stays out of the limelight. But heading into the 2006 election against a well-funded Democratic challenger, the 63-year-old senator acknowledges he will have to work harder to draw attention to himself.

Stepping out of the shadow of McCain, the maverick who challenged George W. Bush for the GOP nomination in 2000, is not easy.
"McCain just has that charisma that very few people have, then you put his life story on top of that," McCain adviser Max Fose said of the former Vietnam POW. "He's like the Fonz. He's the Fonzie of politics."

"He used to drive a Corvette. A guy that drives a Corvette can't be all that boring," said C.A. Howlett, a lobbyist who has known Kyl for 30 years.
