Confirmed: A.B. 'Buzzy' Krongard Sits on Blackwater's Advisory Board
By Spencer Ackerman - November 14, 2007, 12:11PM

That's settled. Blackwater spokeswoman Anne Tyrrell confirmed in an e-mail today to TPMmuckraker that A.B. "Buzzy" Krongard, brother of State Department Inspector General Howard "Cookie" Krongard, is a member of Blackwater's advisory board.

Howard Krongard testified this morning that he doesn't know if his brother is on Blackwater's advisory board, but if Buzzy is, Howard would recuse himself from any Blackwater-related investigations.

Suspicious trading occurs on American and United, the two airlines used in the 9/11 attacks. “Between 6 and 7 September, The Chicago Board Options Exchange saw purchases of 4,744 put option contracts (a speculation that the stock will go down) in UAL versus 396 call options—where a speculator bets on a price rising. Holders of the put options would have netted a profit of $5 million once the carrier's share price dived after September 11. On 10 September, more trading in Chicago saw the purchase of 4,516 put options in American Airlines, the other airline involved in the hijackings. This compares with a mere 748 call options in American purchased that day. Investigators cannot help but notice that no other airlines saw such trading in their put options.” One analyst says: “I saw put-call numbers higher than I've ever seen in 10 years of following the markets, particularly the options markets.” (Associated Press, 9/18/01, San Francisco Chronicle, 9/19/01) “To the embarrassment of investigators, it has also emerged that the firm used to buy many of the ‘put’ options … on United Airlines stock was headed until 1998 by ‘Buzzy’ Krongard, now executive director of the CIA.” Krongard was chairman of Alex Brown Inc., which was bought by Deutsche Bank. “His last post before resigning to take his senior role in the CIA was to head Bankers Trust—Alex Brown's private client business, dealing with the accounts and investments of wealthy customers around the world.” (Independent, 10/14/01)

“Buzzy” Krongard managed firm that handled “PUT” options on United Airlin
FTW - October 9, 2001 – Although uniformly ignored by the mainstream U.S. media, there is abundant and clear evidence that a number of transactions in financial markets indicated specific (criminal) foreknowledge of the September 11 attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon. In the case of at least one of these trades -- which has left a $2.5 million prize unclaimed -- the firm used to place the “put options” on United Airlines stock was, until 1998, managed by the man who is now in the number three Executive Director position at the Central Intelligence Agency.

Until 1997 A.B. “Buzzy” Krongard had been Chairman of the investment bank A.B. Brown. A.B. Brown was acquired by Banker’s Trust in 1997. Krongard then became, as part of the merger, Vice Chairman of Banker’s Trust-AB Brown, one of 20 major U.S. banks named by Senator Carl Levin this year as being connected to money laundering. Krongard’s last position at Banker’s Trust (BT) was to oversee “private client relations.” In this capacity he had direct hands-on relations with some of the wealthiest people in the world in a kind of specialized banking operation that has been identified by the U.S. Senate and other investigators as being closely connected to the laundering of drug money.

Krongard joined the CIA in 1998 as counsel to CIA Director George Tenet. He was promoted to CIA Executive Director by President Bush in March of this year. BT was acquired by Deutsche Bank in 1999. The combined firm is the single largest bank in Europe. And, as we shall see, Deutsche Bank played several key roles in events connected to the September 11 attacks.
THE SCOPE OF KNOWN INSIDER TRADING

Before looking further into these relationships it is necessary to look at the insider trading information that is being ignored by Reuters, The New York Times and other mass media. It is well documented that the CIA has long monitored such trades – in real time – as potential warnings of terrorist attacks and other economic moves contrary to U.S. interests. Previous stories in FTW have specifically highlighted the use of Promis software to monitor such trades.

Former CIA director appointed to board as outside US director - Krongard
Posted by seemslikeadream on Tue Mar-22-05 03:45 PM

Baltimore, MD (March 18, 2005) – DLA Piper Rudnick Gray Cary US LLP (DLA Piper), one of the world’s leading law firms, today announced the appointment of A.B. “Buzzy” Krongard as an outside U.S. director to its Global Board of Directors which has been organized to oversee and coordinate the worldwide operations of the firm. The board will be led by Senator George J. Mitchell who will serve as Chairman and continue his role as a partner within the firm.

Krongard is the former Executive Director of the Central Intelligence Agency and former Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of investment banking firm Alex. Brown, Incorporated. He currently is the Non-Executive Chairman of the Board of Directors of PHH Corporation, a leading outsource provider of mortgage and vehicle fleet management services.

“We’ve assembled a board of directors that reflects the global reach of the firm and the depth of our core practice areas,” said Senator Mitchell. “As a group and individually, we are firmly committed to guiding this firm during a period of tremendous global growth.”

In January 2005, DLA and Piper Rudnick merged to form a legal services organization with more than 2,800 lawyers in 49 offices in 18 countries around the world. The firm has concentrated its global practices into seven areas of focus which include Corporate and Finance; Litigation; Real Estate; Regulatory & Legislative; Commercial; Human Resources; and Technology, Media and Communications (TMC) practices.

Let Bin Laden stay free, says CIA man AB “Buzzy” Krongard

Tony Allen-Mills

...

If the world’s most wanted terrorist is captured or killed, a power struggle among his Al-Qaeda subordinates may trigger a wave of terror attacks, said AB “Buzzy” Krongard, who stepped down six weeks ago as the CIA’s third most senior executive.

“You can make the argument that we’re better off with him (at large),” Krongard said. “Because if something happens to Bin Laden, you might find a lot of people vying for his position and demonstrating how macho they are by unleashing a stream of terror.”

Krongard, a former investment banker who joined the CIA in 1998, said Bin Laden’s role among Islamic militants was changing. “He’s turning into more of a charismatic leader than a terrorist mastermind,” he said. “Some of his lieutenants are the ones to worry about.” Krongard, 68, said he viewed Bin Laden “not as a chief executive but more like a venture capitalist”.

...

Several US officials have privately admitted that it may be better to keep Bin Laden pinned down on the border of Afghanistan and Pakistan rather than make him a martyr or put him on trial. But Krongard is the most senior figure to acknowledge publicly that his capture might prove counter-productive.

Krongard also acknowledged that the CIA was still having trouble planting spies in Islamic militant ranks. “There are hundreds and hundreds of (Al-Qaeda) cells — it’s like a living, moving bit of protoplasm,” he said.

Follow the Money: Bush, 9/11, and Deep Threat

by Fran Shor
Published on Wednesday, May 22, 2002 by CommonDreams.org

The CIA and Other Deep Pockets

In the immediate aftermath of 9/11 a number of news stories appeared concerning investments in “put” options in United and American Airlines. Put options are shares that are bets on falling market prices for specific stocks. In the week before September 11 put options in United and American Airlines went through a furious and unprecedented spasm of investment. In addition put options for Morgan Stanley and Merrill Lynch, two of the biggest occupants of the World Trade Center, also saw abnormal activity. Most of the investments in these put options originated in Germany through the Deutsche Bank. Deutshce Bank had earlier acquired Banker’s Trust, a investment banking firm whose Vice Chairman in charge of “private client relations” in the late 1990’s was A. B. “Buzzy” Krongard. In March of 2001, Krongard was appointed Executive Director of the CIA.

Certainly, the CIA has a history of laundering money and dealings with shady investment characters. What becomes particularly relevant in the lead-up to 9/11 is the August CIA briefing of Bush concerning the potential threat of attacks by bin Laden using hijacked planes on certain sites, such as the Pentagon and World Trade Center, and the fact that the CIA had bugging equipment on bin Laden messages and international banking operations. Although no one has apparently claimed the money from the put options, questions remain about Krongard and the CIA’s involvement.

NEW CIA UNIVERSITY
REVEALS AGENCY PRIORITIES
July 3, 2002,-- 17:00 PDT (FTW) -- The CIA is now operating a university somewhere in northern Virginia. According to an entry in a June 24 newsletter published by an association of former intelligence officers, some of the courses taught at the university are "economic trends, international banking, the world oil market, and how the International Monetary Fund, World Bank, World Trade Organization, etc. and other non-governmental organizations work."

For four years FTW has been teaching that the CIA's primary role, it's raison d'etre, was to serve the interests of Wall Street and the major banks. In our recent three-country lecture tour, our documentation of the close links between CIA and Wall Street has taken many by surprise. Thirty years ago Professor Peter Dale Scott of Berkeley disclosed that six out of the first seven deputy directors of intelligence (CIA's number two position) had gone directly from Wall Street into service at the Agency. Since Sept. 11, FTW's disclosure that the CIA's current executive director, A.B. "Buzzy" Krongard, is a former investment banker has caused deeper rumbles. The firm he once headed, AlexBrown/Deutschebank, has been connected to insider trading on United Air Lines stock just before the Sept. 11 attacks. The NYSE's current executive vice president for enforcement, David Doherty, is a retired CIA general counsel.
more

procedure used at Deutschebank/AB Brown assured anonymity

"European reporters found that most of the suspicious pre-attack trades passed through Deutschebank and especially via CIA Executive Director A.B. Krongard’s former Alex Brown investment division by means of a procedure called portage, which assures the anonymity of individuals making the transactions. But Congress has not publicly revealed whether they will call Krongard and other Alex Brown traders to testify in open hearings, or whether they will subpoena the pre-attack documents in question."
more
http://www.scoop.co.nz/mason/stories/HL0207/S00119.htm

A Deutsche Bank executive was convicted of money laundering shortly before 9/11, and the bank laundered heroin money linked to the CIA.

And Shattuck actually resigned on September 12(!) from his three-year $30 million contract as head of AB Brown.

SMOKING GUN BURIED DURING CALIFORNIA RECALL VOTE!

On October 7 while the eyes of America were fixed on the California Recall vote the Securities and Exchange Commission quietly announced it was closing its investigation of suspicious stock trades connected to 911. The SEC's reason for closing the investigation can best be summed up as "What insider trading?".

...

* Morgan Stanley Dean Witter & Co., which occupied 22 floors of the World Trade Center, saw 2,157 of its October $45.00 put options bought in the three trading days before Black Tuesday; this compares to an average of 27 contracts per day before September 6.

* Merrill Lynch & Co., with headquarters near the Twin Towers, saw 12,215 October $45.00 put options bought in the four trading days before the attacks; the previous average volume in these options had been 252 contracts per day.

The CIA routinely monitors stock trades looking for exactly these kinds of suspicious transactions. The fact that these trades failed to sound any alarms is in itself suspicious as the bank which was the trading hub has a man inside the Agency. That man is CIA Executive Director “Buzzy” Krongard and the bank is Deutsche bank.

http://ez-websites.com/grudge /

But Krongard exhibited the requisite secretiveness when asked
to explain his interest in intelligence and how he came to land
a job in Tenet's inner circle. If you go back to the CIA's origins
during World War II in the Office of Strategic Services, he
explained, "the whole OSS was really nothing but Wall Street
bankers and lawyers."

1. Long tradition - CIA and State Dept as banker siblings
After decades as banker-politicians who among other projects helped finance the Nazis and rescue a whole bunch of them after the war, John Foster Dulles ran the State Department for 8 years while his brother and close business associate Allen Dulles ran the CIA for 10.

Since its inception the CIA has inhabited every U.S. embassy on the planet, its employees posing primarily as those of the State Department.

But somehow we're supposed to pretend these agencies are separate, although there is no oversight we're supposed to think they follow whatever rules are devised to supposedly separate them.

Now we see the Krongard and Krongard example. CIA, State Department, brother-brother, bankers, mercenaries, 9/11 all in one pot, all with protection from the law since they are high-security contracters to the security establishment.

But wait, wait, wait - somewhere a Congressman is fucking where he shouldn't! That's what we need to have investigated.

5. It's not the sex it's because they are traitors, 'Bush referred to Craig as “a goddamned traitor”'

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=389x1713886

Bush is also angry with Craig, a conservative who joined with Democrats in a filibuster to defeat permanent renewal of the Patriot Act. As a meeting recently, Bush referred to Craig as “a goddamned traitor” and told the National Republican Senatorial Committee to start recruiting someone to run against the Idaho Senator in 2008.

Such anger against those who dare oppose him is typical for a President who all too often launches into obscene tirades when his policies are questioned. Bush, on many occasions, has called political opponents “traitors” and, in private, refers to Senate Judiciary Chairman Arlen Specter as a “lily-livered bastard.”

Craig, however, is unfazed by all this and says the Patriot Act “doesn’t do enough to protect the civil liberties of innocent Americans.”

4. How do they know with such certainty...
I'm talking about Cookie, but it applies to about a dozen other liars who have testified before congressional committees, how do they KNOW they're not going to get in trouble for lyin' and forgettin'? Even Cookie's body language, in one of the videos, conveys how not-serious he considers the situation.

How do they KNOW, SLaD?

The more I watch Congress, the more I'm convinced that they're being blackmailed. Have they been informed that they now serve only at the pleasure of the president, and if they take any meaningful action against corruption, they will be suspended? Or is the blackmail of a more personal nature (you only have to impede the leadership, not every member)?

Oh sure, there are still some great reps and senators that speak their minds. But they can't get anywhere without the House & Senate leadership. Or the media...

I'm flabbergasted by the blatant on-going crime(s) that Congress just-as-blatantly ignores.

I probably just need to turn off the computer for a while and open my wine.

6. Maybe the story about "put options" on AA & UA stock

is nothing more than disinformation overkill. Designed to help reinforce the notion that AA & UA planes "really did" crash on 9/11. The perps may have worried that too many people would realize that the whole operation was a scam (explosions, but no planes crashing), and they thought this would be a good way to help fool the public into believing a lie.

Nothing more than disinfo. Just like the alleged "lost" trillion dollars from the Pentagon budget.

1. Are you saying the 4 trillion dollars unaccounted for is lost?

2. Are you saying the 4 trillion dollars unaccounted for is not lost?

3. Are you saying the lost 4 trillion dollars unaccounted for is disinfo?

4. Are you saying the 4 trillion dollars unaccounted for is disinfo and is not really lost?

5. Are you saying the 4 trillion dollars unaccounted for is really accountable and they're just not telling us?

6. Are you saying the 4 trillion dollars unaccounted for is really not accountable and they can't tell us because they've lost track of it?

7. Are you saying the 4 trillion dollars unaccounted for is really accountable but they just won't tell us?

8. Or something completely different?

13. Not sure how to make it any plainer

As I said: "Nothing more than disinfo. Just like the alleged "lost" trillion dollars from the Pentagon budget."

I think it's very possible that the allegedly unaccounted for trillion (or four trillion) dollars may well be disnfo, most likely to help reinforce the idea of gov't incompetence and serve as a distraction issue.

What's your supposition?

you attributed things to me that I never wrote, and now I have no idea what your point is. Then, I asked you not to presume or assume things, you wrote "That's exactly what I have been doing".

I think maybe you're just upset because I think it's very possible, indeed likely, that the story claiming the Pentagon is unable to account for a trillion or more dollars is nothing more than disinformation. Likewise, the claims about put options on UA and AA stock.

I think you believe differently, but at this point, I'm not sure just what your view IS. But, rest assured that whatever it is, I'm not interested in trying to convert you to my speculation regarding these matters.

Plenty of that money could be accounted for but won't cause it's been used for stuff we're not supposed to know about, some of the money is really lost, some of the money has been squandered away to defense contractors, etc.

Yet even Allbaugh is small-time compared to the latest defector to the private sector, Pentagon comptroller Dov Zakheim, who announced two weeks ago that he will be leaving for a partnership at Booz Allen Hamilton, the technology and management strategy giant that is one of the nation's biggest defense contractors. Although Zakheim is not nearly as familiar as Condoleezza Rice, Deputy Defense Secretary Paul Wolfowitz, or Defense Policy Board member Richard Perle, he too has been identified as one of the ultrahawkish "Vulcans" who shaped Bush foreign and military policy from its earliest days. Zakheim has bustled through the revolving doors before, serving as a deputy undersecretary of defense during the Reagan administration, where he worked for Perle before leaving government to join a missile-defense contractor.

At the mammoth Booz Allen firm, Zakheim will join R. James Woolsey, the former director of central intelligence and Perle associate on the Bush Defense Policy Board. These were the defense intellectuals who favored invading Iraq long before Sept. 11 -- and long before any U.N. resolutions on the topic were introduced.

16. Howard Krongard had a conflict of interest from the beginning
Prince's connections seem to have paid off for Blackwater. Robert Young Pelton, author of "Licensed to Kill: Hired Guns in the War on Terror," has reported that one of Blackwater's earliest contracts in the national arena was a no-bid $5.4 million deal to provide security guards in Afghanistan, which came after Prince made a call to then CIA executive director Buzzy Krongard.

Posted by antifaschits on Thu Nov-15-07 11:27 AM

I swore that he was somehow connected with AEI or AIPAC, and sure enough, the State Department chief Inspector General was the head of the The National Legal Center for the Public Interest (and AEI flunky that uses the legal system to attack democracy and promote corporatocracy)
http://www.aei.org/research/AEI%20Legal%20Center/projectID.30/default.asp

from the State website
On May 2, 2005, Howard J. Krongard was sworn in as the Inspector General of the Department of State and the Broadcasting Board of Governors. As an independent reviewer and evaluator of their operations and activities, he oversees audits, inspections, and investigations domestically and abroad, including 260 diplomatic missions in 163 countries and international broadcasting operations in 61 languages that reach an audience of more than 100 million people around the world.

From 1996 to 2005, Mr Krongard was Of Counsel to Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer, a 260-year-old international law firm with 2,500 lawyers in 29 offices worldwide. He was a Director of The National Legal Center for the Public Interest, Washington, DC; a Public Director of the Pacific Exchange (which also acts as Self Regulatory Organization for the Pacific Exchange and the Archipelago Exchange) and Member of its Audit Committee and Regulatory Oversight Committee; a Director of PCX Holdings (demutualized parent company of Pacific Exchange); Director, PCX Equities, Inc. and Member of its Business Conduct Committee; a Member, Council on Foreign Relations Task Force on Non-Lethal Weapons; and the U.S. Representative to the International Lacrosse Federation.
http://oig.state.gov/about/c12822.htm

Does this answer why the State Department was more interested in cover-ups, than in investigations about Iraq frauds, Blackwater crimes, and more?
Could his stint at the Self Regulatory Org. for the Pacific Exchange and Archipelago Exchange mean that he has Abramof and DeLay ties, protecting certain pacific slaveshops from congressional action?

This man lied to Henry Waxman yesterday (check out the CSPAN tape. it can be fully downloaded) Even Chris Shays was forced to express disappointment, even though he was the White House point man on protecting Krongard at the hearing.

krongard lied about his brother being a Director at Blackwater
Krongard lied about giving NPR's Tomlinson a heads up about about the upcoming storm. (he leaked it to Tomlinson's top aide, as though that is different)
krongard lied about not warning several US companies about FBI/State investigations.
krongard lied about why he stopped the State investigation of BLackwater.

par for the course.

Two Brothers and Two Scandals
Submitted by dlindorff on Thu, 2007-11-15 17:32. General Discussion | Impeachment

By Dave Lindorff

The State Department’s top internal investigator, Inspector General Howard Krongard, revealed in a House Oversight and Government Reform Committee hearing Tuesday, that his brother, Alvin B. Krongard, was a member of the advisory board of Blackwater, the very private mercenary company whose bloody, murderous behavior the IGG office was supposed to be investigating.

Unmentioned in reports on this tainted relationship was the fact that Alvin Krongard, the firmer third-ranking leader of the CIA from 2001-2004, has also been the subject of some speculation regarding possible foreknowledge of the 9-11 attacks by some within the intelligence establishment.

Alvin Krongard joined the CIA in 1998, leaving a post at Bankers Trust, which, in 1997 acquired the venerable investment-banking house of Alex Brown. Prior to the acquisition, Krongard had been CEO and chairman of the board of Alex Brown. In the merged firm, he became head of private banking for Bankers Trust, where he was responsible for the bank’s relations with extremely wealthy (and extremely private) clients.

What makes this history of particular interest is that Alex Brown was the investment bank that handled most of the suspicious short-selling “puts” that were placed on the stocks of four companies—United Airlines, American Airlines, Morgan Stanley Dean Witter and Merrill Lynch—that were pummeled by the 9-11 attacks.

As has been reported in Bloomberg Financial News Service reports and in the San Francisco Chronicle, in the several days preceding September 11, 2001, unidentified investors placed an unusual number of “puts” on the stocks of the two airlines whose planes were hijacked that day, as well as on the two investment banks, one of which occupied 22 floors of one of the World Trade Center towers and the other of which owned a building directly across the street which was significantly damaged and forced to close down.

According to news reports, between Sept. 6 and Sept. 9, some 4744 put orders were placed on United Airlines, compared to just 393 calls (bets that the stock would rise). On September 10, 4516 puts were placed for American Airlines stock, vs. only 748 calls. These orders were six times the normal volume of puts and calls on the Chicago Board Options Exchange for those firms. Moreover, there were no such puts placed on any other airlines, and there was no news justifying such orders at the time. In the three days prior to 9/11, 2151 puts were placed on Morgan Stanley shares, and 12,115 puts on Merrill Lynch, companies that also were not at the time the subjects of any negative news.

http://www.thenation.com/doc/20071203/scahill

While working under Tenet at the CIA, Krongard acted internally, reorganizing divisions and pushing for projects like an intelligence venture capital firm, but he did on occasion speak publicly. In October 2001, he declared, "The war will be won in large measure by forces you do not know about, in actions you will not see and in ways you may not want to know about, but we will prevail."

Some three years later, in January 2005, Krongard made news when he became the most senior Administration figure to articulate the benefits of having not killed or captured Osama bin Laden. "You can make the argument that we're better off with him ," he said. "Because if something happens to bin Laden, you might find a lot of people vying for his position and demonstrating how macho they are by unleashing a stream of terror.... He's turning into more of a charismatic leader than a terrorist mastermind." Krongard also characterized bin Laden "not as a chief executive but more like a venture capitalist," saying, "Let's say you and I want to blow up Trafalgar Square. So we go to bin Laden. And he'll say, 'Well, here's some money and some passports and if you need weapons, see this guy.'"

27.  Christian fascists
Edited on Fri Nov-16-07 01:27 PM by seemslikeadream

AMY GOODMAN: On the back of your book, Chris, is a quote from your professor at Harvard, Dr. James Luther Adams, who said that in a few decades we would all be fighting “Christian fascists.” Who was he, and why did he think this?

CHRIS HEDGES: James Luther Adams was my ethics professor at Harvard Divinity School. He had spent the years 1935 and 1936 in Germany working with Dietrich Bonhoeffer in the Confessing Church or anti-Nazi church and eventually was picked up by the Gestapo and told to leave the country. He came back -- and this was in the early 1980s, when I was in seminary -- and saw the articulation of this new political religion, this religion that talked about seizing control of mainstream denominations, as well as institutions, creating a parallel media empire through Christian radio and broadcasting, and ultimately taking control of the government itself.

And he understood, in a visceral way, how when countries fall into despair -- of course, this began -- it was the time that began the assault on the American working class, which has been accelerated and essentially left tens of millions of people within our own country dispossessed -- he understood how demagogues use that despair. And I think we can say there, in many ways, has been a kind of Weimarization of the American working class. And he saw what we were doing through globalization, what we were doing to our working class and our middle class, coupled with the rise of these so-called Christian demagogues, as a frightening and toxic combination, which, if left unchecked, would destroy our democracy.

The Cannons of Christianity

Christian cannons have fired at my days
With the warning beneath the holy blaze
And bow to our authority
Say the cannons of Christianity

Oh the children will be sent to schools
Minds of clay are molded to their rules
Learn to fear all of eternity
Warn the cannons of Christianity

Holy hands will count the money raised
Like a king the Lord is richly praised
On a cross of diamond majesty
Say the cannons of Christianity

Missionaries will travel on crusades
The word is given, the heathen souls are saved
Conversions to our morality
Sigh the cannons of Christianity

Come the wars and turn the rules around
To bend your soul on the battle ground
And the Lord will march beside me
Drone the cannons of Christianity

Cathedral walls will glitter with their gold
And the sermons speak through silver robes
Building castles amidst the poverty
Say the cannons of Christianity

Worship now and wash your sins away
Drop the coins, fall to your knees and pray
Cleanse the world of all hypocrisy
Smile the cannons of Christianity

Christian cannons have fired at my days
With the warning beneath the holy blaze
And bow to our authority
Say the cannons of Christianity

Democracy Now: American Fascists Pt. 2

Chris Hedges's new book examines how Christian dominionists are seeking absolute power and a Christian state. According to Hedges, the movement bears a strong resemblance to the young fascist movements in Italy and Germany in the 1920s and '30s. Hedges is the former New York Times Middle East bureau chief and author of "War Is a Force That Gives Us Meaning."

Chris Hedges on the religious right in the United States. Mr. Hedges is a Pulitzer Prize-winning veteran war correspondent, who now writes about religion and politics. He is a graduate of Harvard Divinity School and is the author of the just published "American Fascists: the Christian Right and the War on America." In this book, Hedges, who grew up in rural parishes in upstate New York where his father was a Presbyterian pastor, attacks the Christian fundamentalist movement from the point of view of a believer, as someone steeped in the Bible and Christian tradition. He points to the hundreds of members of Congress with high approval ratings from the three most influential Christian Right advocacy groups as one of many signs that the movement is burrowing deep inside the American government, in order to subvert it. The movement's call to dismantle the wall between church and state and the intolerance it preaches against all who do not conform to its warped vision of a Christian America are pumped into tens of millions of American homes through Christian television and radio stations, as well as reinforced through the curriculum in Christian schools. He shows that the movement's yearning for apocalyptic violence and its assault on dispassionate, intellectual inquiry are laying the foundation for an unrecognizable fundmentalist America. His thesis: we face an imminent threat. Chris Hedges earlier books are highly acclaimed. He is the author of War Is a Force That Gives Us Meaning, What Every Person Should Know about War and another religiously themed book, Losing Moses on the Freeway.. He has worked for various publications including the Christian Science Monitor and the Dallas Morning News. He was part of the New York Times team that shared the 2001 Pulitzer Prize for global terrorism coverage. Hedges has written extensively about his experiences on the front lines of war. He has reported about his experiences in Sarajevo, El Salvador, Guatemala, Nicaragua, Colombia, the Middle East and other places around the world. He is lecturer in the Council of the Humanities and Ferris Professor of Journalism at Princeton University. He received the 2002 Amnesty International Global Award for Human Rights Journalism. (In a 2003 Commencement address at Rockford College in Rockford, Ill., Hedges raised the intense ire of audience members when he spoke out against the war in Iraq. Many regard Hedges as a "philosopher of the experience of war." According to Hedges, the experience of being in a war zone, where there is very little distinction between life and death, fills a person with a sense of "meaning" and brings him to a "high" that cannot be experienced so strongly any other way, producing a kind of addiction.)

FOR MEMORIAL DAY WEEKEND
FROM MICK FARREN BLOG POSTING

I’ve been aware of various news reports concerning Fundamentalist Christians making increasing efforts to turn the US Military into a “Christian” fighting force, but other things, some epic, some trivia, have been absorbing my attention, but when activists and Air Force veterans like Michael Weinstein make statements like the one below I kinda think it’s time to take notice. I mean, I don’t feel exactly comfortable with the idea that megaton loaded nuclear bombers are flying around with crews who believe the Book of Revelation is going become reality anytime.

“The Christian Taliban is running the Department of Defense, It inundates everything. Can you imagine a contingent of religious zealots, with their contempt for secular values (and such manifestations of secular order as the U.S. Constitution) — and with their zest for holy war — in control of the most potent fighting force and weaponry in human history? Is this possible? Well, said Weinstein, consider the 523rd Fighter Squadron, based at Cannon Air Force Base, N.M., which calls itself The Crusaders, and whose emblem consists of a sword, four crosses and a medieval knight’s helmet. They fly F-16s with payloads consisting of “a wide variety of conventional, precision guided and nuclear weapons.” And listen once again to Commander-in-Chief Bush, speaking in 2003 to Palestinian Prime Minister Mahmoud Abbas, according to the Israeli newspaper Haaretz: “God told me to strike at al-Qaida and I struck them, and then he instructed me to strike at Saddam, which I did, and now I am determined to solve the problem in the Middle East. If this is a religious war — a “clash of civilizations,” waged by competing agents of God’s will — victory may be indistinguishable from Armageddon. God help the human race.”

Because I love America: Reagan's Assistant General Counsel, Mikey Weinstein Speaks Out. with God on our side
By Mikey Weinstein

When I began asking questions about what I saw going on at Colorado Springs in 2004 I never expected that the inquiry would lead me to the horrifying conclusion that our country had been taken over by people who have used our own freedoms to enslave us. But that is what happened. When I began I, like most people, was focused on the personal. I believed that what was happening at the United States Air Force Academy, the harassment of cadets and staff with unwanted evangelism, was limited in scope. As the months passed, however, I found myself forced to constantly reassess my basic assumptions. The logic of events was stark and undeniable. Promises of an open inquiry were ignored; decent and courageous people like former Air Force Chaplin MeLinda Morton were intentionally muzzled to ensure the truth would not be heard and the wrongs righted.

As a Republican and an Academy graduate I find myself in head on conflict with my own oath to protect the Constitution. As a Jew I confronted a situation through ears that still hear the cries of my people walking silently into the brick buildings that would reduce them to ash. I cannot stand still and let that happen to my country.

You know about the law suit we filed; that suit took on the issue directly, based on the1st Amendment Right of members of the military to choose their own spiritual paths, unhampered by those placed in positions of authority and on the basis of the Establishment Clause and Clause Three of Article Six, which prohibit the existence of a national religion. That is what has happened. America now has a national religion whose tenets extend to a foreign policy that sees war in the Middle East as the fulfillment of its core mission . The power block responsible for the take over are now, effectively, in charge of the mightiest weapon the world has ever known, the United States Military.

My law suit was one element in the larger battle to take back America. That might seem excessive or alarmist; I only wish that was the case.

32. FLASHBACK: 109th Congress Tried To Defund Iraq Watchdog, Transfer Authority To Krongard
http://thinkprogress.org/2007/11/17/bowen-krongard

FLASHBACK: 109th Congress Tried To Defund Iraq Watchdog, Transfer Authority To Krongard
Congress created the Special Inspector General for Iraq Reconstruction (SIGIR) “to provide oversight of the Iraq Relief and Reconstruction Fund (IRRF) and all obligations, expenditures, and revenues associated with reconstruction and rehabilitation activities in Iraq.”

SIGIR Stuart Bowen has provided an independent check on President Bush’s Iraq efforts, concluding that the administration’s post-war planning “was insufficient in both scope and implementation.” Last year, he reported that over $8.8 billion in funds meant for Iraq reconstruction could not be accounted for.

Not surprisingly, Bowen’s assessments have frustrated the Bush administration, which called them “too negative.” In 2006, the White House persuaded its conservative allies in the House Armed Services Committee, then led by Rep. Duncan Hunter (R-CA), to terminate the SIGIR position on Oct. 1, 2007. As Tim Dickinson of Rolling Stone points out, oversight responsibility would have been transferred to embattled State Department IG Howard Krongard. The New York Times reported:

The idea, Mr. Holly said, was simply to return to a non-wartime footing in which inspectors general in the State Department, the Pentagon and elsewhere would investigate American programs overseas. The definite termination date was also seen as helpful for planning future oversight efforts from Bush administration agencies, he said.

The House Oversight Committee is currently investigating allegations that Krongard blocked investigations into fraud, waste, abuse, and mismanagement in Iraq, working to “support the Bush Administration” rather than “act as an independent and objective check.” Because of this investigation, Krongard has now “recused himself from the State Department’s two main internal investigations in Iraq.”

Luckily, in Dec. 2006, Congress voted to restore Bowen’s tenure.

Blackwater: bulging biceps fueled by ideological purity
BLACKWATER, the secretive private army now emerging into public view, is a perfect hinge linking two key elements of the Republican political base: America's war machine and a muscular form of fundamentalist Christianity.

Military contractors such as Halliburton and Blackwater are the brainchild of Vice President Dick Cheney and former Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld. A major goal of Cheney when he was secretary of defense in the first Bush administration was to privatize as much military work as possible, ostensibly to make it more efficient. He commissioned a study by Halliburton, which predictably liked the idea and wound up as America's largest military contractor. Cheney was hired as Halliburton's chief officer, awaiting the return of a Republican administration.

When that occurred, Cheney and Rumsfeld enthusiastically promoted privatization, and went so far as to include private contractors in the "Total Force" of the American military, standing never before given to contractors. When Rumsfeld left the Pentagon in 2006, there were nearly as many private contractors in Iraq (100,000) as American troops (130,000). Contractors provided food, fuel, housing and, in the case of Blackwater, heavily armed soldiers with a license to kill and an aggressive attitude.

Blackwater operated basically without oversight since proconsul Paul Bremer gave it a no-bid $27.7 million security contract in 2003, with immunity from Iraqi law. In 2004, four of its soldiers were ambushed in Fallujah and their bodies desecrated, bringing retaliation that killed hundreds of Iraqis, leveled the city and fueled the insurgency. A month ago, Blackwater guards killed 17 Iraqi civilians, in an incident that has drawn the attention of Congress and the FBI.

Blackwater soldiers, often with Navy SEAL or Army Special Operations backgrounds, are paid from $500 to $1,500 a day, far more than regular-duty troops. Their image is straight from central casting: young men, tanned biceps bulging from black T-shirts, wearing wraparound sunglasses and brandishing automatic weapons. For young veterans who loved military action but couldn't afford to stay in, Blackwater offered big money and plenty of opportunities to order people around. Blackwater's aggressive guards became the image of American cultural insensitivity, sometimes erasing the best efforts of our uniformed soldiers.

Blackwater is the private empire of billionaire Erik Prince, a major Republican fundraiser and bankroller of several fundamentalist Christian organizations. His private army employs some 2,300 active gunners and boasts a register of 21,000 ready to serve on call. He has the largest privately held arsenal in the country and the expertise and firepower to bring down a small country.

In 2006, Prince expanded internationally, forming a new subsidiary in Barbados, outside American taxes and regulation, to train foreign forces, often funded by American military aid. Elite Blackwater soldiers have conducted secretive "black jobs" for the CIA or other spy agencies.

Despite its financial success, Blackwater is under fire from two sides: Democratic critics who want accountability and families of the four men killed in Fallujah in 2004. The families have sued, alleging negligence.

Blackwater's lawyers assert it cannot be sued because it is part of the "Total Force." But, while Congress demands that it be subject to American military codes and international treaties, Blackwater takes the opposite view — it is not military, it's a civilian contractor. Big money has gone into D.C. lawyers, lobbyists and public-relations spinners to sell this apparent contradiction.

There have always been mercenaries, and a case can be made for limited use of contractors, but the Bush administration has erased the line between a national military and a private war machine. Iraq is our first outsourced war, siphoning billions of taxpayer dollars into the private war machine.

Military contractors have become an integral part of the American military, allowing the White House to understate troop numbers and avoid a military draft. Unpopular wars for oil or ideology can be waged without calling on middle-class families to send their children; mercenaries will fill the jobs if volunteers don't come forth.

In Prince, the Republicans' radical Christian base is wed to the war-machine base, the one providing votes and manpower, the other providing campaign funds.

The resulting combination is one of rigid ideology and eagerness to solve any problem with overwhelming force. The Bush administration convinced itself its views on Iraq were right, pushing aside contrary evidence, then failed to think beyond "shock and awe," with resultant horrors.

In a world of nuance and gray areas, ideological purity and bulging biceps will cause as many problems as they solve. Blackwater seems to epitomize a dark side of our psyche that should be troubling to all Americans.

35. Has Morgan Spurlock Found Osama Bin Laden?
Please note when you read this article that the firm used to place the substantial and irregular put options on United Airlines stock before 9/11 (including a $2.5 million unclaimed payout) was, until 1998, managed by Buzzy Krongard. Why the mainstream media has not followed up on who made the trades remains a mystery. Anyway, of course, Buzzy Krongard doesn't want bin Laden caught! Bin Laden would rat out all of the CIA/bin Laden/Bush links in about two seconds. If he's still alive ..
Let Bin Laden Stay Free, Says C.I.A. Man
By Tony Allen-Mills
The Times UK Sunday 09 January 2005

The world may be better off if Osama Bin Laden remains at large, according to the Central Intelligence Agency's recently departed executive director.

If the world's most wanted terrorist is captured or killed, a power struggle among his Al-Qaeda subordinates may trigger a wave of terror attacks, said AB "Buzzy" Krongard, who stepped down six weeks ago as the CIA's third most senior executive.

"You can make the argument that we're better off with him (at large)," Krongard said. "Because if something happens to Bin Laden, you might find a lot of people vying for his position and demonstrating how macho they are by unleashing a stream of terror."

Krongard, a former investment banker who joined the CIA in 1998, said Bin Laden's role among Islamic militants was changing.

"He's turning into more of a charismatic leader than a terrorist mastermind," he said. "Some of his lieutenants are the ones to worry about."

Krongard, 68, said he viewed Bin Laden "not as a chief executive but more like a venture capitalist".

He added: "Let's say you and I want to blow up Trafalgar Square. So we go to Bin Laden. And he'll say, 'Well, here's some money and some passports and if you need weapons, see this guy'.

"I don't see him keeping his fingers on everything because the lines of communications are just too difficult."

"There are hundreds and hundreds of (Al-Qaeda) cells - it's like a living, moving bit of protoplasm," he said.

The empire’s operatives exposed: The Krongards, 9/11, and Blackwater/Iraq
Nov 19, 2007, 01:18

New bombshell testimony before Congress has revealed that Alvin B. “Buzzy” Krongard, the former CIA executive director connected to 9/11 insider trading, is a consultant and advisory board member of Blackwater USA, the New World Order’s leading intelligence-related corporate mercenary death squad now under investigation for war crimes, murder, arms smuggling, and fraud in Iraq.

“Buzzy” Krongard’s Blackwater role was confirmed by “Buzzy”’s brother, Howard “Cookie” Krongard, who (not ironically) is the Bush/Cheney administration’s State Department’s inspector general, and the official under fire for stonewalling and quashing attempted probes of Blackwater’s operations..

More bad news for "Buzzy"? Surprised

Has Morgan Spurlock Found Osama Bin Laden?
His next project is by far, his riskiest yet. Spurlock has finished his new movie Where in the World is Osama Bin Laden?, in which he sets out to do what the United States government has apparently failed to do: Find Osama Bin Laden. The Weinstein Company bought the thing after seeing only 15 minutes of it at the Berlin Film Festival, and here’s where it gets really interesting. Rumor has it that Spurlock actually found Osama Bin Laden.

The film’s director of photography told SlashFilm that Morgan “definitely got the holy grail.” Since the movie is about him hunting Osama, that would make him the holy grail… wouldn’t it? For now though, everyone around the production is keeping things locked down..

37. The Krongards, the Schmitzs and the Bushes -- a question
Edited on Fri Dec-07-07 03:56 PM by End Of The Road
Hail SLaD, oh wise one, whose knowledge of these crooks goes way beyond mine...

Besides being on Blackwater's board and having been in the CIA and, of course, being long-tme friends of the Bushes, are there any other business connections between the Krongards and the Schmitzs that you know of?

Second, one of the Schmitzs (joe or john) is married to Colomba Bush's sister - and I'm having trouble finding background on that family. Do you know maiden name? Family's relationship to GHW Bush? There's bound to be one, I feel sure...

ON EDIT - It's Columba Garnica Callo - so never mind on that one.
