Israelis, sipping Pepsi, watch bombardment of Gaza town
Source: McClatchy Newspapers

SDEROT, Israel — A tower of white smoke rose from the northern Gaza town of Beit Hanoun after another Israeli bombardment Monday morning, and a half-dozen Israelis, perched on a dusty hilltop, gazed at the scene like armchair military strategists.

Avi Pilchick took a long swig of Pepsi and propped a foot on the plastic patio chair he'd carried up the hillside to watch the fighting. "They are doing good," Pilchick, 20, said of Israeli forces battling Palestinian militants in Gaza, "but they can do more."

Somewhere in Beit Hanoun, Ashraf El-Masri's family cowered in their concrete tenement home, their neighborhood surrounded by Israeli soldiers. El-Masri said that five residents had been killed by Israeli shelling that morning, and the blasts had traumatized the youngest of his nine children into a terrified silence.

The scenes were separated by less than two miles, but they illustrated the dramatically different perspectives on Israel's ground incursion into the Gaza Strip on its second full day.

7. I heard a report...
...on Al Jazeera yesterday about a family in Gaza in a car that approached an IDF checkpoint. The car was fired on & blown up. A little girl in the car survived & cell phoned a relative who called medics. The IDF would not permit the medics to get to the little girl.

A wounded child in a car full of her dead family was denied medical rescue.

There just really aren't words for this barbarism.

41. That's just one event of many
The Israelis have been victims of senseless violence at the hands of suicide bombers and the like, for decades.

Whether it's suicide bombers or conventional attacks, war is war. There are casualties and horrible stories on both sides.

This is why we need Obama so desperately...at least he wants to TRY to create peace through negotiations. Unlike our current lame-ass, lame-duck, cowboy-wannabe pResident of the White House. :grr:

10. UN contradicts Israel over depth of crisis in Gaza
UNITED NATIONS – The United Nations said Monday there is an "increasingly alarming" humanitarian crisis in Gaza, directly contradicting Israeli denials that its offensive caused the growing problem.

U.N. humanitarian chief John Holmes told reporters Monday that U.N. officials believe as many as 25 percent of the 500 people killed in the fighting are civilians and that Gaza's health system is "increasingly precarious" due to the more than 2,500 injured.

He said Gaza is running low on clean water, power, food, medicine and other supplies since Israel began launching a heavy attack on the militant Islamic group Hamas that controls Gaza's government, first with airstrikes and then with troops and tanks.

Israeli leaders have maintained consistently there is no humanitarian crisis for the Palestinians living in the densely populated territory, and that they have been keeping the border crossings open and are delivering vital supplies.

Crisis takes toll on Gaza's seasoned doctors, medics...

Excerpt~
At least six medics have been killed by Israeli strikes and three ambulances have been destroyed by Israeli fire, according to United Nations officials.

"There are no safe areas, and Gazans who want to flee the fighting have been prevented from leaving the Strip," said John Prideaux-Brune, the head of Oxfam-Great Britain's Palestinian office.

Prideaux-Brune lost one Palestinian colleague on Sunday when an Israeli shell hit the ambulance he was in as it tried to spirit a wounded patient away from advancing Israeli forces in the northern Gaza City town of Beit Lahiya.

The increasing risk to medics means that some emergency calls are going unanswered because ambulances can't safely navigate the battlefield.

The London Times quotes a text message sent by Dr. Gilbert:

“We are wading in death, blood, and amputees. Many children. A pregnant woman. I have never experienced anything so terrible. Now we hear tanks. Pass it on, send it around, shout it out. Anything. DO SOMETHING! DO MORE! We are living in a history book now, all of us.”

Watch these, and do something to stop the slaughter:

27. Here's your link, buddy!!!
http://jeffreygoldberg.theatlantic.com/archives/2009/01/nizar_rayyan_of_hamas_on_gods.php

I asked him (Nizzar Rayyan, the Hamas leader who was killed, along with two of his wives and several of his children, in an Israeli bombing raid earlier this week) if he believed, as some Hamas theologians do (and certainly as many Hezbollah leaders do) that Jews are the "sons of pigs and apes." He gave me an interesting answer that reflects a myopic reading of the Koran. "Allah changed disobedient Jews into apes and pigs, it is true, but he specifically said these apes and pigs did not have the ability to reproduce. So it is not literally true that Jews today are descended from pigs and apes, but it is true that some of the ancestors of Jews were transformed into pigs and apes, and it is true that Allah continually makes the Jews pay for their crimes in many different ways. They are a cursed people."

Oh, wait...that's what Palestinians think of Jews. My bad.

37. Since when is the truth out of line?
I notice you didn't think the poster who claimed Israelis believe Palestinians are subhuman was out of line. Rayyan has only been dead for a few days, so it's not a belief that went out of vogue 50 years ago. And it's not just one man. From the article:

"I asked him (Nizzar Rayyan, the Hamas leader who was killed, along with two of his wives and several of his children, in an Israeli bombing raid earlier this week) if he believed, as some Hamas theologians do (and certainly as many Hezbollah leaders do) that Jews are the "sons of pigs and apes."

38. The truth??? Maybe in your world
Here are your words;

"Oh, wait...that's what Palestinians think of Jews. My bad."

One man, or 100 men, it matters not..your statement paints all Palestinians with the same brush.
It was, and remains, out of line. Nor does it resemble in any way "the truth".

The other poster was just as out of line for his claim, at least the subhuman part. The fact that the state of Israel denies any humanitarian crisis exists? Factual. Tzipi Livni has been quoted as saying such.

39. Semantics doesn't change the truth
I didn't think the people who read the posts here would be so simpleminded as for me to have to qualify every statement with "some", "most", "many", etc. Apparently I was mistaken.

As for it "not resembling in any way "the truth"", do you claim that Rayyan did not say this, and that "a number" of Palestinians do not also believe it?

56. Using your logic
Why stop there?

You could go on to say that RW Republicans don't agree with GW Bush's beliefs, because that would be "painting all right-wingers with the same brush".

You just want to bury your head in the sand, and deny the FACT that the Israelis are the ones who have been persecuted and killed for far too long, by people who consider them subhuman.

The Jews probably had enough of that kind of shit back when Hitler was in power. It's no wonder they're bound to crack at some point, and just start bombing.

Kind of like when someone is driven mad, gets on top of a building, and starts shooting. What they're doing isn't right, and it has to be stopped--but it's understandable when you learn the story behind it.

If the Arab world would leave the freakin' Israelis alone, there would be no need for retaliation.

62. No, that would be incorrect to say that.....
What would be correct to say is "Not all Republicans agree with GW." See the difference the addition or subtraction of "right-wing" makes? It's like teaching grade school around here sometime.

Now let me address the rest of your post.

Your words:

"It's no wonder they're bound to crack at some point, and just start bombing.

Kind of like when someone is driven mad, gets on top of a building, and starts shooting. What they're doing isn't right, and it has to be stopped--but it's understandable when you learn the story behind it.

If the Arab world would leave the freakin' Israelis alone, there would be no need for retaliation."

Lets change a few words:

"It's no wonder they're bound to crack at some point, and just start lobbing rockets.

Kind of like when someone is driven mad, gets on top of a building, and starts shooting. What they're doing isn't right, and it has to be stopped--but it's understandable when you learn the story behind it.

If the Israeli's would leave the freakin' Palestinians alone, lift the blockade, invite the UN in to ensure security, dismantle the illegal settlements, etc there would be no need for Hamas, Hezbollah, et al."

Thank you for making my point.

Unfortunately, for all concerned, both the Palestinian and Israeli peoples have far too many within their ranks that DO believe the other to be subhuman. Not all on either side, but a good number.

Making generalizations like have been made in this thread serve no purpose except to inflame a situation already riddled with years of death and destruction.

11. US troops 'monitoring Rafah crossing'
US troops are helping Egypt prevent "arms smuggling" from tunnels in the Rafah border-crossing, as Israel continues its attacks on Gaza.

NBC anchorwoman and chief foreign affairs correspondent Andrea Mitchell said Sunday that US military officers from the Corps of Engineers had been stationed on the Egyptian side of the Rafah crossing in order to prevent "arms smuggling from illegal tunnels" by Palestinian fighters.

“ And there are US Army Corps of Engineer personnel on the ground right now on the Egypt side looking at the tunnels to see how Egypt could be reassured that there won't be continued smuggling through on that," she said on Meet the Press.

Moti Danino, bundled in a sweater and cotton overcoat, said his 20-year-old son was a platoon commander in Gaza. Three years ago, a rocket fell in his garden and lightly wounded his two daughters.

"My son is in there fighting for the daughters. It is a good thing," Danino said. Still, he added, "What parent wouldn't worry if his son is fighting?"

47. It's not funny;
it's become an exercise in futility. If all of you sophisticated political observers can't, or don't want to, recognize overt propaganda when it's dished out to you, and it feels good to you to sympathize with the Palestinians and demonize the Israelis, I at least, have mostly decided to let you preach to your own choir.

For my part, I know that we in this country would never allow another country to fire missiles at us day after day without massively retaliating. Maybe most of you would be wailing about the poor Mexicans or Cubans or whomever was on the receiving end of this retaliation, or maybe you'd feel justified. I'd feel justified. Are the Israelis any less entitled than we to fight back with all they have? I think you do feel that they're less entitled. What is the reason for the double standard? Could it be ?? or /// I'll let you fill in the blank.

67. isreal terrorism
israel built a blockade around Gaza but the people weren't starving to death fast enough and isreal really needs that land so they can build more illeagle settelments.
So why not just bomb them into oblivian.
isreal has killed more of it's terrorists than Hamas has killed.
Who's the winner?

48. I will respond for you
But I am not a defender of Israeli agressions. That is just as wrong as the cheering mobs after a bus bombing or suicide bombing in Israel

72. But who keeps putting the half dozen douchebags in power over there?
Doesn't Israel still have actual elections? (as opposed to electronic fraud like we have here)

We can look at our own situation in the US and say honestly that Chimpy was never elected. But Israel seems to have actually elected their douchebags. And the biggest douche of all unfortunately looks all too well positioned for a re election in February. :evilfrown:

44. I think that Israel has finally misoverestimated the willingness of the American people
to support any of their dumshit provocations. This is gonna blow up in their face big time.

The world has finally run out of tolerance for their bullshit. And most Americans have finally caught on.

49. You think America is going to turn on them?
With Big Media and Hate Radio and our detached "representatives" cheering the whole thing on? You're more optimistic than I am.

51. "America" in the form of our institutions will never turn on them
but the American people are pretty fed up with their bullshit. Just another indication that we no longer live in a democracy.
