THe Luby's Cafeteria massacre might have been stopped had concelaed carry existed ...
in Texas at that time.

Suzanna Hupp lost both her parents in the shooting. Had she violated the law at the time and carried her handgun into the restaurant, she could have stopped the shooter.

On Wednesday, October 16, 1991, Hupp and her parents were having lunch at the Luby's Cafeteria in Killeen. She had left her gun in her car (several months before, she decided in case she got caught and had her chiropractor's license revoked) to comply with Texas state law at the time, which forbade carrying a concealed weapon. When George Hennard drove his truck into the cafeteria and opened fire on the patrons, Hupp instinctively reached into her purse for her weapon, but it was in her vehicle. Her father, Al Gratia, tried to rush Hennard and was shot in the chest. As the gunman reloaded, Hupp escaped through a broken window and believed that her mother, Ursula Gratia, was behind her. Hennard put a gun to her mother's head as she cradled her mortally wounded husband. Hupp's mother and father were killed along with twenty-one other persons. Hennard also wounded some twenty others. As a survivor of the Luby's massacre, Hupp testified across the country in support of concealed-handgun laws. She said that had there been a second chance to prevent the slaughter, she would have violated the Texas law and carried the handgun inside her purse into the restaurant<2>.

Her testimony in front of Congress is powerful and riveting and can be viewed at:

1. What is generally not reported
is the Susanna Gratia Hupp was one of four people in Luby's that day that had guns in their cars. The other three were killed

2. I wasn't aware of that....
Before Florida had concealed weapons permits I used to carry a handgun in my car. I never took it with me into a restaurant either.

Honest citizens tend to obey the law.

Thanks for the info.

3. Wow. I wasn't aware of that part of the story either.

Makes the slaughter seem a greater outrage -- if that's even possible.

4. Depends on your point of view
" The mere existence of guns and ammo is what prompted this incident in the first place . And the continued proliferation thereof is an ironclad guarantee that it will happen again . "

Well , I will guarantee one thing . A whole lot of people started breaking the law the very next day . It is no small wonder the laws were changed here .

Anybody drop a dime yet ? Yea or Nay ?
