Taiwan Power solar power station bid draws attention

The bid for a Taiwan Power Company solar power station project estimated to be worth NT$3 billion (US$91.7 million) is expected to draw competition from leading solar cell makers and system providers in Taiwan.

Taiwan Power announced a plan to establish 7-8 solar power stations during 2008-2011 with a planned total power output of 10 peak megawatt (MWp). The project is open to bids by both Taiwan-based and overseas solar-related industry players.

Given that conventional generation of electricity is still much cheaper than solar power, Taiwan Power has set only a 10MWp target during the initial stage. The company does not rule out the possibility of establishing more solar power stations if per watt cost can be reduced via an enhancement in the power conversion efficiency.
