1. So many, so brilliant.
I heard "Across the Universe" on the radio the day that John Lennon was shot, and I can never listen to it again without breaking down completely.

But I think this is one of the simplest, sweetest songs he ever wrote:

"In my Life"

6. I agree with In My Life. It's just perfect.
I LOVE so many of them for their complexity and innovation, but this one was just human. Who wouldn't want someone to sing this to them?

11. I have a friend who hates the Beatles due to their "whiteness and pretensions"
(his words, not mine)
but he LOVES "In My Life" for the very reasons you state.
It is a great song.

3. Golden Slumbers from Abbey Road. It reminded me of my grandmother who had
been deppressed and trying to starve herself so she would die. She was 102 at the time. A formidable woman who worked her whole life like a dog, took care of others and did not retire well. I used to cry when I played that song. She finally passed away at 103. One of my all time favourite people. I was so lucky to have her in my life. Anyhow... Golden Slumbers I think is based on an old british nursery song.

always reminds me of my English grandfather, who climbed the stairs to the top of a double-decker to "'have a smoke" :)

Love how Lennon could take the simple act of reading a story in a newspaper and turn it into a classic.

9. Definitely in my top 5
and I am thankful that I saw Bob Weir and Rob Wasserman kick the SHIT out of this song at a Lennon tribute in 2010. Unbelievable. Wanted it to never end.

Found a YouTube from the balcony, but the sound was ever so much better in the front.

24. Yeah, from "shallow" Paul!
When Lennon and McCartney started sniping at each other after the divorce, John wrote "How do you Sleep" and one line says: "The only thing you did was Yesterday. And since you're gone it's just Another Day." But Eleanor Rigby invalidates that idea!

A lot of people think "Sgt Pepper's" is the greatest Beatles album ever, but I've found real fans love Rubber Soul and Revolver (the Brit editions: Capitol records sliced and diced them here to make more $$$$). I know I do--as well as the Brit edition of Help.

25. Exactly, Paul is not shallow (he actually had a broader palette than Lennon
and that's why many of my favorite Beatles songs are "Paul songs"
and all of the Beatles songs that I absolutely detest are "Paul songs"

15. Hold Me Tight
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qlKzsR2HREc

From my very most favorite Beatles abum, from their rock band days.

With The Beatles

Side One
1. "It Won't Be Long"
2. "All I've Got to Do"
3. "All My Loving" <----- The first Beatles song I ever heard. I knew right then.
4. "Don't Bother Me"
5. "Little Child"
6. "Till There Was You" <----- My current fascination. Bust out the nylon string and give it a shot.
7. "Please Mister Postman"

Side Two
1. "Roll Over Beethoven"
2. "Hold Me Tight"
3. "You Really Got a Hold on Me"
4. "I Wanna Be Your Man"
5. "Devil in Her Heart"
6. "Not a Second Time"
7. "Money (That's What I Want)"

18. Right this minute? "Words Of Love"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K6TUHWL9Fa8

Yeah, I know it's a Buddy Holly song, but they do it SO well. They must have loved Holly's music, 'cause you can hear a sort of reverence in this track. You can also hear the very ESSENCE of Vox guitar amplifiers in all their chime-y deliciousness.

Whenever The Beatles did a cover song, it was always at least as good as the original. Pity they never took on The Everly Brothers; there'd a-been a mass outbreak of grandma slapping!

:loveya:

PS: the remastered albums are worth every penny (lane).

21. "Only a Northern Song"
there was a message there when it was released. Norther Songs is their publisher's name. Ever notice how their last few songs like "Let it Be" and "Hey Jude" have dirge tempos?

26. That's ONE of my favorites
"Revolver" has always been my "go-to" Beatles ALBUM.

We've had a few "What is your favorite Beatles ALBUM" polls on DU and Revolver is always at, or near, the top.

"Sgt. Pepper" may have been a bigger EVENT or PHENOMENON in popular culture, but in terms of songs and performances, I still think "Revolver" is the better ALBUM.

On the "Revolver" album, I'd say my favorite song is probably "She Said She Said."

I also LOVE The fact that guitarists busted their ASS, for YEARS, learning the "And Your Bird Can Sing" solo, without knowing George Martin sped it up in the studio. It was not "performed" at that tempo.

:toast:
