Ladies: It's Official! The Mini-Skirt is OUT!

MILAN — Aside from bold color, the biggest news off the spring-summer 2011 is the skirt, or better yet. The hemline.

With two days to go until the end of the Milan Fashion Week, the mini skirt has all but disappeared from the runway, replaced by hemlines that fall around or below the knee. Long skirts are also very popular.

In keeping with this new look, which already made its first appearance on the runway for the upcoming winter, the designers do away with short shorts and most trousers.

On Saturday both Giorgio Armani and Raf Simons for Jil Sander based their collections on the new hemline...

2. Not always

As I recall from my costume history class, hemlines went up during WWII, supposedly due to a shortage in material and dropped right after the war.

However, hemlines were raised during the pre-depression roaring twenties and of coarse, the prosperous 1960s and once again, skirts started to get shorter in the mid nineties. So, there's that.

I suppose it's easy to attribute hemlines to the economy. It's also just as easy to claim that skirt/dress lengths drop because the shorter trend has become stale.

7. The economy wasn't bad during WWII.

People was making good money, just wasn't much to spend it on. That's one of the reasons the economy boomed after the war. People had gone for years without stuff (depression and war) and they wanted to make up for lost time.

The exception was the New Look post WWII which again was a reaction to depression and war restrictions.

No, economy and hem lines aren't a firm cause and effect. I've seen a study connecting hem lines to sun spot activity. :eyes:

4. It takes a while

Back in the fall of 1973 I bought a mauve, below-the-knee a-line skirt. I wore it on the first day of school and girls literally screamed at me. I got so many dirty looks. It was hilarious. I was a fashion rebel. However, by the end of that school year, all the girls were wearing below-the-knee a-line skirts.

5. oh yeah -- think about all the long skirts you see sported about now -- that trend that

started in california a couple of years back.

but you're never gonna see the end of the mini -- but i will be glad to see more mid length skirts -- you get tired of see every body in the same thing.

6. Trends repeat themselves

And I am sorry if I conveyed the idea that mini-skirts were over forever. However, I dance merrily that for at least a while, they won't be so bloody prominent. I'm sick to death of seeing starlets in minis - they're just so unimaginative.

8. I think the more important and interesting point was lost there.

Women's trousers are going out of style according to these people and are nary to be seen on the runways.

Color me skeptical. I'd be happy (I've always kind of thought trousers on women looked dumb...but then again, I hate wearing them too. I've got a happy little closet of sarong (and a dress kilt) that I wear when I'm not at work.) but I think that womens' pants are here to stay.

9. Well, IMHO

What we're going to see is a return to high-waist, big-legged pants. Another returning style that I am ecstatic about. I don't mind low-waist pants but skinny jeans must die.

10. oy -- don't get me started. i'm tired of seeing all the same looks at red carpet events!

EVERYONE in some version of a sheath with a train.

i ALMOST thought that we were going to start seeing some cocktail dresses at these events -- a dress btw i happen to love -- and
it's such a great look that carries creativity so well.

12. It may take a while to percolate - the trend on my campus is a pretty decisive

upward move in hemlines, although it seems to be more shorts than skirts. On the bright side, Uggs and other boots are a little less dominant this semester...

13. i have found that when something is "in" the industry insures it is in. only thing you can find

to buy is what is "in". i went years without buying new jeans cause they only sold certain jeans.... not to mention tops, sweaters ect... i thought they were ugly and didnt want brown and orange. amazed how there was no choice. regardless where i looked. they are just now getting some shirts and sweaters i like.

industry really does control it.

My solution is 1- to be cheap and buy clothes every few years and 2- Goodwill, where you can find (at least where I live, in large cities) everything from a wide range of eras.
