All of the sudden it won't recognize the external speakers that always worked beautifully, and even the built ins aren't working. System Preferences shows "no input sound" "no output sound." Frustrating! Any suggestions?

But seriously:
On the Finder strip up top, by the clock, does the speaker icon have some rounded lines out of it or is it just the speaker?
Have you checked itunes' sound status (muted)?
Does your keyboard have a mute button?

2. Check Audio Midi Setup |
|
Under Applications/Utilities and see what it says for your output setup (should be 44100 khz, I believe).
You might also try trashing your Macromedia Preferences folder in Library/Preferences. Sometimes a Flash update will hose up things -- one symptom is that youtube videos don't have any sound.
