If I were in prison, solitude would be a blessing. Forced unsolitude would be the punishment.
That is, being forced to be around others 24/7 would be what breaks me.

Solitude would be like, "Cool, I was in there for ten years? Felt like a few weeks. Thanks. Very peaceful."

The worst, of course, would be to be forced to share a cell with 6 guys who loved "Friends" and talk about it incessantly and model their speech, actions, and lives on David Schwimmer.

Could there be any worser hell?

3. Every evening's activity would "OMG, we should so totally act out an episode of friends!"
"Let's do the one that Ross misunderstands something Phoebe said!!"

2. Couple problems with that, though.
First, with the exception of some supermax places, you wouldn't be alone, you'd be with one or two other guys. On the plus side, they probably wouldn't like Friends. On the down side, they probably wouldn't like you, either.

Second, even if you are talking about solitary, I don't think you quite realize just how mind-fucking it is to be alone in a small cell with absolutely no diversions for 15-23 hours each day until you've actually tried it.

4. No, probably not.
I'm watching an episode of X-Files involving a prison, and one of the guys was threatened with solitary, which made me think about it.

If I could have books, though. Mmmm... it's like how I like to spend my vacations. Stay at home, read, go nowhere.

Or go somewhere, but stay holed up in the hotel or coffee shop, reading and writing.

I suppose solitary doesn't allow books or anything, though, does it?

That should be considered cruel and unusual.

5. I believe it's warden's discretion at most places...
which probably would mean "no, no books" in almost all circumstances.

Heck, I've never been in prison, but even a day or two in county jail here and there has been enough to let me know that jail/prison of any sort is to be avoided at all costs.

8. Yep,
give me a good old-fashioned single occupancy dungeon any day. :)

I'm not interested in exploring the prison social scene at all. :(

10. I completely agree.
Cannot understand how being left alone could be punishment. However, I am pretty sure there is more to solitary confinement than just the isolation.

13. getting gang raped in prison?
having your booty sold for cigarettes and commissary?

constantly having to watch your back 24-7 against thousands of other men who only live to scheme, smell fear, and act like predators?

something tells me you'd probably be happier in a monastery somewhere in the mountains than you would be in prison.

by most of your posts, i can tell you are an intelligent, thoughtful, and creative guy.

you wouldn't last 10 minutes on a gladiator deck.

14. Did you read the first part of my post?
All conditional on "if I were in prison".

Never said I wanted to be there.

Your histrionics are quite funny, though. :7

And thanks for the compliment.

You're right - I'd be way happier in a monastery than in prison.

16. Forced "companionship" would be the lowest circle of hell.
Edited on Mon May-11-09 03:20 PM by The Velveteen Ocelot
This morning at work we were talking about conversations on airplanes. A couple of my coworkers raved about how much they LOVE chatting with people on airplanes and at the airport. I said the last thing I want is for some asshat to pester me while trapped on an airplane for several hours. I don't mind flying but I use that time to do some reading or just look out the window and listen to music on the iPod and not listen to some stranger blathering about Jesus or their surgeries or their children. Bah.

being alone against one's will is loneliness." I don't think that's anywhere near the quote. I'll google it.

on edit:Yep, I got it wrong completely. It's "Language has created the word 'loneliness' to express the pain of being alone. And it has created the word 'solitude' to express the glory of being alone".
