Lou Reed - Heroin
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g5eXSPKHlso

I dont know just where I'm going
But I'm goin to try for the kingdom if I can
'cause it makes me feel like I'm a man
When I put a spike into my vein
Then I tell you things arent quite the same

When I'm rushing on my run
And I feel just like jesus' son
And I guess I just dont know
And I guess that I just dont know

I have made very big decision
Im goin to try to nullify my life
cause when the blood begins to flow
When it shoots up the droppers neck
When Im closing in on death

You cant help me not you guys
All you sweet girls with all your sweet talk
You can all go take a walk
And I guess I just dont know
And I guess I just dont know

I wish that I was born a thousand years ago
I wish that I'd sailed the darkened seas
On a great big clipper ship
Going from this land here to that
I put on a sailors suit and cap

Away from the big city
Where a man cannot be free
Of all the evils in this town
And of himself and those around
Oh, and I guess I just dont know
Oh, and I guess I just dont know

Heroin, be the death of me
Heroin, its my wife and its my life
Because a mainer to my vein
Leads to a center in my head
And then Im better off than dead

When the smack begins to flow
Then I really dont care anymore
About all the jim-jims in this town
And everybody putting everybody else down
And all of the politicians makin crazy sounds
All the dead bodies piled up in mounds, yeah

Wow, that heroin is in my blood
And the blood is in my head
Yeah, the gods good as dead
Ooohhh, God that Im not aware
I just dont care
And I guess I just dont know
And I guess I just dont know

*nods*

4. One of my favorites
Heroin is Just a great song.

Rock n Roll Animal and Lou Reed Live are "must have" albums.

Here's a link to the song, no video of this performance that I know of.

5. Good version BUT
"Rock 'n' Roll" from "Rock 'n' Roll" just plains "Rocks!" I remember when that album first came out, I was in the Air Force, off-duty a bunch of us getting drunk on 3.2 beer in the dorm and playing air guitar to that song! I do believe his band was comprised of ex-members of Alice Cooper, who had gone solo with "Welcome To My Nightmare", also a favorite at the time...

I never got into "Heroin" because I couldn't see praising it, and as a result I frankly thought the song was boring...

I'm not sure what was inspiring this particular performance, but whatever it was, thank you!

10. The Midnight Insect is an incredibly good dancer
I love watching footage from this tour. Reed does all these moves from dances from the early 60s. You can catch him doing the frug, pony, mashed potato, dirty dog, etc...

11. That really struck me about this clip.
And to tell you the truth, I never really noticed that before. But when I think about it, even just with his voice, he's a rhythmic genius. Must be the poet in him. Or the brill building song writer.

16. I once saw Reed, James Taylor, and Paul Simon back up Dion
Reed was the only one of the three who could nail the Belmonts moves. And he nailed them dead cold.

greatest ever.

But I also like Reed's solo work, especially the albums NEW SENSATIONS (one of my all time favorite albums), NEW YORK, and MISTRIAL.

ON EDIT:

A few recommendations for VU fans:

The VU box set "Peel Slowly and See"
Lou Reed's second volume of lyrics, "Pass Through Fire: The Collected Lyrics"
"The Velvet Underground Handbook" by M.C. Kostek. This used to be hard to find or often expensive, but it's a fascinating papaerback. I don't know that it was ever released in hardcover. It is published by a company in the UK.
