We live in a small town just over the county line (the other county has the city and all the 'burbs) and there's no visible sign of busage ANYwhere. Not even a park and ride, unless we drove a silly number of miles in a lateral direction, which is pointless.
I'm planting my first garden this year--small, but then again I'm the only one who eats a lot of veggies in the family (although MG Jr. is a cucumber addict). Well, I will, as soon as the temps get above 50 degrees (cold snap all week here). I've grown herbs for years, so I just need to expand that garden a bit so I don't drop $3 for a bunch of basil that I end up using once.
Funny about neighborhoods--the house my mom's family lived in during the Depression was also on the "outskirts"--yet they could walk to the streetcar line which took them pretty much anywhere they needed to go--and they had chickens and a big garden, and kept a lamb to fatten up before Easter (to this day my mom can't eat lamb). Now it's been so engulfed by the city that it's considered inner city (and quite a dangerous place to live).
